Do your friends and family think your crazy for the amount of money dropped into DJin

hahah long title i know, but anyways, do your friends and family think your crazy? my friends think its the biggest waste of money and always say stupid things. my mom flipped out when she saw how much it cost me for my xone 92. whats your experience with people who just don't understand spinning.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Apr-09-2006 06:55:

Not really, no. My dad is an even bigger music junkie than me. It's in the blood.

Posted by sr126 on Apr-09-2006 07:05:

my parents gave up on me years ago. other people think i'm loaded w/all kinds of cash or something...

no one really thinks very much if you lower your car, and throw some rims on it... build a dj set up, and people think you're nuts. i think it's because they belive you just dropped a wad of cash and walked out of the store w/ all kinds of gear and shinney new vinyl collection all in one shot.

i think it's hard for most outsiders to wrap their had around the fact that it most of us cobbled our set up little by little, and or by using hand me downs.

every once in a while pick someone up off the floor when i tell them that vinyl is still in production.

Posted by on Apr-09-2006 07:15:

Nope..

Posted by DJ Elf on Apr-09-2006 07:46:

Like hell, some of my friends tells me sometimes to sell all my DJ equipments, but if I do, I'm sure I will buy a pair of techs and buy vinyls again becouse I love music too much to give it up

Posted by mzvirbulis on Apr-09-2006 07:46:

same can apply to above reply's, my parents and that dont care! they know i love it alot and i dont blow my money on crap things.

tell your Fing friends to go and buy a crappy little gemini mixer and some belt drive TT's and then see why you spend that money!
honestly its better than pissing it up against the wall on grog like they fucking do to get stoned

all that matters is as long as you love it still.

Posted by Trance Nutter on Apr-09-2006 08:12:

No.

My Dad's hobby is restoring a car.
My brother's hobby is building a plane.
My hobby is djing.

I'm actually the cheapest of the lot

Posted by T-Soma on Apr-09-2006 08:20:

People always wonder where i get the money since im only 15. Not many have realised i dont eat out much, i borrow most my cloths from my brother and work an extra shift atleast once a week.
I get cut when people are like "Did you mummi and daddi buy this for you?" I want to rip there throats out.
Anyways... My gf is one of the few people who realises and is happy because she understands how much i love the music but then again is just unhappy coz iv had the same shoes for the last 2 yrs (thats just one example)

Haha im so cheap!

Edit: Some sp fixed

Posted by skip on Apr-09-2006 11:34:

lol! none of my friends/family really understand me. i asked my girlfriend what she thought about if i ordered a new mixer because i wasn't happy with my old one. she told me i was crazy and ranted about it for a while. i ordered it anyway. she didn't really say anything to that though. and i remember when i was getting my first dj gear. neither my mom, my dad or my girlfriend supported me one bit. they all thought i was fucking out of my mind. i didn't care though, i just went ahead and ordered it when i had the money. and most my friends think i'm crazy for putting money into something like this. "you can't even make any music with these? you just play songs after one another? what's so great about that? why would you need all this expensive equipment to do it? i can do the same thing in winamp! etc. etc." and my setup is cheap compared to most setups here. vestax pcv-175 with the rotary kit, 2x cdj-100s' and sennheiser hd-280pro. so yeah, no one understands me at all.
and it's the same thing about CDs. i've got around 950 CDs atm and people ask me why on earth do i buy music when i could just download it all for free.
they just don't get it, but i'm fine with that.

edit: and now i've been thinking of upgrading my cdjs for a while. i might go for the cdj-200s or the denon dn-s3500's. dunno which ones yet and i dunno if i'll really do it. really depends on the money i'll be getting from my summer job. but i haven't mentioned anything about this to anyone so far and i don't think i will until i've placed my order!

^^^ words of a true music-lover
im only getting my TTs and SSL around June/July, but ive already made a disclosure of the prices. I said to my grandpa that the "vinyl player" costs around 600 $ and he just laughed. but most ppl get that confusing look when they hear that headphone can cost 170 $ (dj1210)

p.s. GREAT avatar

Only my Djing and music mates understand, my family aren't very supportive of it, though i find mum dancing around to the music quite a bit My bro thinks its a complete waste of time. Cant wait to drop $4000 on a xone 3D, $3500 on an iMac and $1000 on monitors, that should make em happy

Posted by Basstard on Apr-09-2006 14:13:

all my parents said is "you better be fuckin good at what you do wee lad"

Posted by n3lly on Apr-09-2006 14:49:

Nothing i've ever done has gotten me support from my parents.

It's actually gotten me down quite a bit in the past, and recently as well actually.

It's a pain in the ass when you can't share a hobby with anyone. When no one understand why you like something etc. Hence this place is savage!

I remember i went out and bought the Rio 500 mp3 player AGES back. 256mb onboard memory etc. Myself and my mate were the shit. lol My parents couldn't believe i had spent 250 quid on it! And went nuts at me. Little did they know mp3's would catch on a lot more then they thought. Next thing, 80% plus of people have one. (don't quote me i'm just waffling)

Anyway my next obsession was my car, the audio side of things. So i went out and bought 2500 worth of gear. (DLS A3 amp 780rms, Genesis 4ch amp 4x75rms, Resonant Engineering SE12" sub, DLS R5A fronts, Pioneer DEH P80mp)

Just to give you an idea of what went in..

And a picture or two of the work..

So you can imagine what my parents were thinking when i had just bought my first car (by myself) and then decided to strip the whole thing.

Anyway having gone on that tangent, I then decided to go for the whole dj'ing thing. (Big mistake!) lol, no i'm happy with everything so far, but the costs started spinning out of control. And it was just another reason for my parents to get annoyed at me.

I've actually found it annoying, that my parents haven't supported me. As i find it's more a hobby and something that puts a smile to my face then this HUGE expense (which they're not even paying for). Why they can't support what i like, is what i find difficult to accept. I suppose it's also cause a lot of my mates aren't into the dj'ing thing. Let alone good music.

Grand well that's all my posting for today finished lol.

The lesson i've learnt over the last few years is, If it makes you happy, go for it. It's completely worth it every time you slip those headphones on and hear that scratching noise and your legs start to hit the ground with the beat.. Love it!

nelly

A gigantic +1 to that!

I got a bunch of CDs, Mp3s, 2 CDJ200s and a VMC002. No one I know understood why I was buying those, or why I couldn't just "buy a 100$ cd player like everybody else". Everyone was criticizing me for it, telling me I should invest in my education instead

All we're doing is getting something to help us get through our education. We're not trying to stop it.

Granted sometimes we should be reading books instead of reading bars and phrases lol But that's bound to happen now and again.

Please tell me we wont end up the same as them when we're older..

Yes. Because.

Posted by skot_e on Apr-09-2006 15:47:

Originally I was only gonna read here, but some of you have reminded me of the things I have been through with those around me. Most of my mates get it now, but it took them around 10 yrs to catch on to the whole club/ rave / Dj thing. I heard many early criticisms especially from muso's but today it has become more genuinly combined and accepted, and many have found musical interest, tho mostly with house.
I equate my interest as that of my (late) grandads generation and the way some are obsessed with a miniture train set and the miniture charactes and trees etc.

A hobby is a true love affair, and as such should be treated with reverence. Indulge yourself. Whatever your interest.

As for the parents out there, ask them if they would prefer you to get a drug habbit like herion to spend your hard earned on.

And Tommy, get some new shoes mate> 2yrs? sheish :P

no comment on my dj gear but my parents mention a view time the loots of money i spend on vinyl

my girlfriend never complains she likes it

Posted by kimchi on Apr-09-2006 17:42:

great responses.

when i got my cdj1000's my friend was like, "dude why did you spend 1500 for two cd players. those things are so ugly, i bet my car cd player does more things than that"

i pushed him out of my room for that one lol

Posted by tubby on Apr-09-2006 22:54:

my dad doesn't really understand the attracttion of dj'ing but has no problem understanding the fun of messing weith the music nor with the price of gear. He just bought a new organ that has an RRP of AUS$75,000. He's still remembered for taking out a home loan to buy an organ about 35 years ago, and has written into his will that whichever of his children produce the first grandkid gets all of his music gear.
Compared to that my expenses are minimal. Even my wife who has to suffer the expenses with me has told me to stop buying mp3's, just pay the extra for the wav files from now on. She doesn't go quite so far as to tell me to buy vinyl, so I have to treat myself every now and then to a big pile.

Posted by L.E.N. on Apr-09-2006 23:05:

My parents have no idea that I spent over 10K in equiptment and vinyl..(over 6 years)

Posted by Sjodalf on Apr-10-2006 00:53:

I've never dared beginning calculating on how much i've used on vinyls and records, i'm sure that's 3x as much as what the gear costs itself.

And i'm familiar with the quotes you've mentioned from friends and familiy already. But it's all about priority! Even if they think you're insane

Posted by s3nate on Apr-10-2006 01:09:

So far my family has been pretty supportive. The only thing they don't support is me having the music to loud!

Reminds me of this guy who lived for tomorrows all of his life, saved every penny, spent ten years in school while eating as little as possible, never spending on anything, wearing cheap clothes and suffering through all of his education - only to obtain his degree and die in a car accident during the following month. The guy never got to live.
