47 People Killed, Suicide Bombing in Pakistan

KARACHI (Reuters) - A suspected suicide bomber targeting Sunni Muslims killed at least 47 people in the Pakistani city of Karachi and wounded dozens at a prayer meeting marking the anniversary of Prophet Mohammad's birth, police said.

"The blast shook the earth. It was like hell," Mohammad Ehtesham, a 70-year-old worshipper in the park where the blast took place, told Reuters.

"We were about to finish our prayers when blast went off ... It was so strong," said Ali Nasir, a young man among the wounded.

Soon after, angry youths, some of them armed, went on a rampage, setting a petrol station and cars ablaze and firing on police and paramilitary troops as they tried to reach Nishtar Park, in the heart of the city's commercial district and close to the mausoleum of Pakistan's founder, Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

"The initial evidence we have gathered from the site of blast suggested that it was a suicide attack because there was no crater found," Jehangir Mirza, Sindh province police chief, told Reuters.

The venue had been checked by security beforehand.

The blast was believed to have been centered close to the stage where prayer leaders from a Sunni organization, Jamaat-e-Ahle Sunnat, had been standing, and police confirmed several of them were killed.

Jamaat-e-Ahle Sunnat has a following of hundreds of thousands of people, raising fears of more violence in the city.

Television pictures showed dead bodies lying on the ground and wounded being taken to hospitals in vans after the explosion.

"It was a sad incident in which 47 innocent people were killed," Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao told state-run television.

Police and provincial health officials said scores of people were wounded, including journalists and photographers covering the prayer meeting, and hospital authorities called for blood donors to cope with the emergency.

Youths, many wearing green head bands, roamed streets in neighborhoods well away from the bomb site, pelting stones, burning tires and forcing shopkeepers to lower their shutters.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility, but sectarian violence between Pakistan's Sunni Muslim majority and minority Shi'ite Muslims has plagued the country, and Karachi in particular, for the past two decades.

In February, at least 40 people were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a Shi'ite procession in the town of Hangu in the country's North West Frontier Province.

Pakistan launched a crackdown on sectarian militant groups and preachers of hatred last July, but just last week in the capital Islamabad 5,000 supporters of a banned Sunni hardline group held a rally organized under another name.

Karachi suffered another tragedy on Sunday when at least 30 women and children were trampled and crushed to death in a stampede at a mosque where about 20,000 worshippers had gathered for prayers to mark the month of the Prophet's birth.

The month of Rabi-ul-Awal is celebrated particularly by Pakistan's dominant Barelvi sect of Sunni Muslims.

It's not that I like it, I just don't care that much. It's one of those "Oh, that's a shame" type of things.

Can't do anything about it though.

You've got your opinion, and I mine, so lets leave it at that, shall we Eric?

Should you choose to continue, then sir, I challenge you to a duel. Pistols at dawn.

In more populated countries, the act it self is not was is feared. I would fear the trampling more than anything else.

Like when Katrina hit. Just over 1000 people died in the US, yet the same week, 1000+ died in Iraq during a stampeed on a bridge. Really puts the numbers from Katrina into perspective.

If they aint American. Nobody in America will care. (and canadians will hear about it for weeks)

As Cale said, it is a shame. But its on the other side of the planet. Unless you have family or friends over there.. the best any of you can do is pretend to care.

Can anyone suggest a good, unbiased (yes, I know that is nearly impossible) source to read up on the issue between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims? I would really like to become informed on this issue.

I know, I've been trying to find the same. Alas it seems that anybody truly writting about the subject has some kind of hidden agenda.

Trust no one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divisions_of_Islam

quote:

Sunni
Main article: Sunni Islam
Sunni Islam is the largest denomination of Islam - the Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'ah.

According to Sunni thought, Muhammad died without appointing a successor to lead the Muslim community. After an initial period of confusion, a group of his most prominent companions gathered and elected Abu Bakr, the Prophet's close friend and father-in-law, as the first Caliph.

Sunnis initially believed that the position of Caliph should be democratically chosen, but after the first four Rightly Guided Calliphs the position turned into a hereditary dynastic rule. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1923, there has never been another Caliph.

quote:

Shi'a
Main article: Shi'a Islam
Shi'a Islam is the second largest denomination of Islam.

Shi'a Muslims believe that Ali was appointed by Muhammad to be the direct successor and leader of the Muslims. They regard him as the first Imam, which continued as a hereditary position. The largest group of Shi'a Muslims believe in a total of 12 Imams. The Shi'a Hadiths include the sayings of the Imams.

I find BBC to be the most unbiased for nearly everything. Followed by Reuters.

wow talk about no regard for human life... meh no one said u had to care.. but u dont have to be a blatant asshole about it... i hope no one speaks about ur worthless ass like that when ur time comes...

as a shia muslim... my deepest condolences to those who have been affected... this feud between shia's and sunni's has to end... its stupid and is caused by way too much ignorance.

As a shia muslim i can honestly say that I have yet to read an "unbiased" version of the history involved. It is long, complex and another example of a severe weakness in human beings to be in power.

a sad day indeed.
