trying to make those hesitated beats

those hesitated beats you hear in countless tunes.

right before a change like in the into ,or during the chorus when a new element comes crashing in

correct me if im wrong but it sounds like either the rim shot/bass/snare or kick drops out for a quick second and some type of skip is created.

boom,boom,boom then hesitate then ,the skip then the new element comes in.

i dont want to sound like everyone else i want to create my own,just need to know how to construct a hesitated ,skip beat at the end of a bar ,to introduce a new section.

I think no one will be able to help you without you posting a clip... I have no clue what you're talking about...

like leaving some kicks out and then coming in with a new melodic element?

its called a "roll"...the simplist way(maybe not but very effective) is to cut the clip of the roll out of a tune and place it in your sequencer. Now slice up the roll into segments at each drum hit. Now you have cut each sound as a single hit. now you can tell within 85-90% acuuracy of where the hits go. Now import your own drum hits (or other sounds..whatever is to your liking) into another track under the roll you just cut up. Now place your sounds in the same way the cut up hits are placed. Now you should have soem idea of how to make a roll.

It wont be 100% the same but it will good enough for you to get the basic idea.

I think what is meant here is that you leave out the 4th kick of the bar like...

this is 16th notes in a bar...

k---k---k---k---
----s-------s---
this is how normal beat goes kick = k snare = s

see? this would go for first few then for this kind of transition you leave out the fourth kick like this ->

k---k---k---B--- B means left out kick
----s-------ssss

so you leave out the 4th kick and create an underlying roll instead...

btw sorry if the diagram is wrong...I'm drunk...it was my fuckin' b-day!!!!!!!!!!

Yup it's called a fill, and there are a million ways to do it. Like someone said you can to a snare roll at the end of the beat, but I often do stuff similar to this (which I think is what you're looking for):

code:
S:|x--x--x--xx-x-xx| B:|x--x--x--x--x-xx|

Maybe toss in a little reversed chrash or sumthin', I guess this sounds a little "hesitated", but like I said, there are a million ways to make a good fill.

good information...thanks guys

My favorite fill (it was in Angel Eyes. It's over at the amatuer promo forum) is to leave out the two last kicks and replacing them with reversed crashed. They 'attack' where the kicks would attack. You can ofcourse add another reversed crash too, that's what I did. I totally loved the result. Nice effect. Like this:

K---K---K---K---K---K-----------K---K---K---K
----S-------S-------S-------S-------S-------S
------------------------R---R----------------
--------------------------------C------------

Where: K = Kick
S = Snare
R = Reversed Crash
C = Another Reversed Crash

It sounds like:

Beatboxer1: Pow Pow Pow Pow Pow Pow WoshWhos
Beatboxer2: Tch Tch Tch wwwoOOSH

If you understand ;P
