HappyHappy 15,000 Layer Photoshop File

Bert Monroy released his latest Photoshop painting this week after 11 months of work with an estimated 2,000 hours. The attention to detail is amazing in this 10 foot wide poster.

Damen

This is my latest and most ambitious digital painting of a Chicago scene unveiled at Photoshop World in Miami on March 22, 2006.
It is a panorama of the Damen Station on the Blue Line of the Chicago Transit Authority.
Adobe Illustrator was used for generating the majority of the basic shapes as well as all the buildings in the Chicago skyline.
The rest was created in Photoshop.
The image size is 40 inches by 120 inches.
The flattened file weighs in at 1.7 Gigabytes.
It took eleven months (close to 2,000 hours) to create.
The painting is comprised of close to fifty individual Photoshop files.
Taking a cumulative total of all the files, the overall image contains over 15,000 layers.
Over 500 alpha channels were used for various effects.
Over 250,000 paths make up the multitude of shapes throughout the scene.

Close-up 1:

The front face of the train was created in its own file. The reflections in the windows were added once the train was placed in position within the overall image.
The side of the train car was created in a separate file. Duplicating that file made it easy to add additional cars.
The duplicates required changing the reflections in the windows, the accumulated grime and the car numbers to make each car appear different.

Close-up 2:

Symbols, text and logos were created in Adobe Illustrator.

Close-up 3:

The grime was created with Spatter brushes, available within the Photoshop brushes palette, which were modified to randomize the effect.
The rust was created with the same Spatter brushes but with Color Dynamics applied. The rust was in a separate layer that was also given a layer style of Inner Shadow to add the dimensional effect of the rust appearing under peeled paint.

that's some wicked skills with photoshop

INSANE!!!!

I LOVE PHOTOSHOP!!!!!!!

The picture of the train itself is bad imo. It doesn't look realistic at all - I've seen games that had trains rendered as well as that, it doesn't look like it's actually on the tracks, and lastly, it's very very obvious it's digitally drawn, unlike the first picture posted.

now that's dedication...

and what did he get back for those 2,000 hours he spent on it? it better be some worldwide recognition or some $$$ (don't just tell me he did cuz he had so much spare time on his hands)

Subway stations are very beautiful... they show humanity in its entirety... every rides the subway... from the richest of people to the absolute poorest...

When I used to write poetry I used to go to subway stations for inspiration...

Although maybe the scene was chosen for its complexity? Its got a full range of colours, surfaces, and lighting.

What a waste of time. He could've achieved a better rendering in a day through other techniques.

holy shit... thats a lot of effort... i like a lot

but wouldnt of a 3d animation program work better?

Now that truely is a work of art. Maybe I just say that because I'm lucky if I can draw a stick figure but regardless the detail is incredible.

Posted by geroin on Apr-14-2006 02:25:

Cosmic Fur:
the reason it does not look realistic is because it is zoomed in on it and its not supposed to look absolutely real
the main point is for you too look at the whole picture which is incredible in detail and does look realistic
this is definately a work of art

i actually lived 3 substops away from this one. the Damen blue line stop is actually where all the hip/artist types live

Sorry man....no offence....you dont know what your talking about.

As geroin stated you have to look at the big picture here, the close-up of the train is not supposed to be looked at so close up. It just shows how much detail he had to put in, while zoomed into the photo to make it look realistic while zoomed out.

And your point about trains being rendered has nothing to do with photoshop painting. For an image to be rendered it is first built completely in 3D using a 3D modeling program (ie. 3d studio max, Maya, XSI, Zbrush or any number of other packages) Then once it is rendered, the mesh is unwrapped onto a 2d plane, to make sure nothing is streached out when you apply a texture. THEN in photoshop you paint or find textures for the model and apply them back on the model. THEN lighting, camera shots, and rendering. WAY different process, and set of skills. Think about it as painting with a brush vs. sculping clay and then painting it in great detail, then setting up proper lighting, and taking a photo of it.

lol, thats like using two sticks to make a fire when you could use a lighter.

its amazing that he can do that, but so what? its not really artistic skills, its just technical skill anyone could learn with practice.
The only real amazing thing is that he actually had/spent that much time on it.

OMG i feel a tumor coming on....

So you must be saying that drawing, painting, sculpting, and even making music are just technical skills that anybody could do with practice?
