i'm sure there's tons of threads like this in MD and c0r, but i'm curious...

what do the MWTAs listen to when they're not listening to EDM?

i think it'll be interesting to hear some of our more obscure musical influences that we don't usually get to talk about, and maybe you guys know of some local musicians that people outside of the MW may not neccesarily know of...

Most people recact kind of weird when I say this, but I listen to just about everything including opera. I grew up listening to rock and classical music, and my range of influence has grown very broad since.

Outside of EDM, I listen exclusively to Austrian Yodeling. I'm working on a project that combines the two that's sure to rock a mountaintop dancefloor.

I know you're joking, but that could actually be kind of cool if you did it right. Now I'm going to be thinking about that all day.

i like beck... or led zep, doors, cure, steve miller, fleetwood mac, smashing pumpkins, and of course PETER FRAMPTON... the list goes on.

That would be cool. I'm a huge SP fan myself. I'm still upset with myself for never seeing them live.

Coldplay, Sigur Ros, movie scores are great, Riverdance, Celtic music, Phantom of the Opera, anything with lots of piano. Thats all I can think of right now.

Pretty diverse lineup...

- The "Jammy" stuff like Phish, the Dead, DMB, SCI, Claypool, etc.

- The Jazz in the vein of Miles, Sarah Vaughan, Billie, Ella, Branford Marsalis, MMW, Soulive, etc.

- I really dig quote en quote "neo soul" a la Erykah Badu and Jill Scott

- Hip Hop: ATCQ (FTW!), Black Star, Mos Def, Kweli, J5, the Beastie Boys, Common, DJ Premiere, Gang Starr, etc.

The one disc that I keep playing right now though (other than Airdrawndagger, which is on permanent repeat) is:

The Beastie Boys - The In Sound from Way Out

The only way I can describe it is The Beastie Boys stoned on acid playing some of the wettest funk I've ever heard... Highly recommended!

i never cared for SP when they were together, but i saw Zwan live a few years ago, and it was one of the best concerts i've ever been to.

^^ a lot of that stuff i haven't listened to in forever but i still dig it. i'm sure i've forgotten lots of stuff too, i don't have any old CD books with me to refer to.

and probably my favorite non-EDM genre of music is the conglomeration of emo-indie-modern-day-"rock" (i hate generalizing it because there are so many bad emo/indie bands, and a lot of the good bands don't fit into one specific category)... but stuff like Coldplay, Keane (probably my #1 favorite band), Something Corporate, Juliana Theory, Aqualung, Elliot Smith, Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, Dashboard Confessional, Rooney, Buddahead, etc...

and for local music, these are a few of my favorites:

The Good Luck Joes - "a sound that treads nimbly around Harrison-esque guitar hooks, Coldplays piano-driven grandiosity, and Wilco's intimate confessions-in-song"... and they went to Garth's high school, lol.

The Amber Estate - "a fusion of pop sensibilities and attractive rock stylings, driven by electro-acoustic grooves and saturated with melodic hooks and powerful vocals"... from Minneapolis.

Willy Porter - "a first-rate entertainer whose utterly charming combination of musical and lyrical muscle and finesse has been winning over audiences across the United States and Europe for years. Onstage, he masterfully combines the skills of a virtuoso musician, an eloquent poet, an agile athlete, a damn funny comedian and even a pretty good dancer"... solo folk-rock musician from Milwaukee, puts on an AMAZING live show. way better than Steve Porter, lol.

These are all the groups i've liked over the years, some I don't like as much now but the more electronic stuff is what i'm still into. The other stuff I appreciate but not an avid listerner as I once was...just soo hooked on instrumental/electronic music period..

Classic Rock - The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Journey...

Progressive Rock/Kraut Rock/Art Rock - Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, Moody Blues..

Metal/Industrial - Metallica, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Front Line Assembly, Godsmack, Linkin Park...

R&B - Lots of Motown artists, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Smokie Robinson, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Vandelas, Brian McKnight, some Usher..

New Age/World Fusion - Enigma, Delerium, Balligomingo, Enya, Deep Forest, Dead Can Dance..

Mainstream Electronic/Electronica - Moby, The Prodigy, Crystal Method, Royksopp, Olive, Daft Punk..

Ambient/Downtempo - Ulrich Schnauss, Tangerine Dream, Windspiel, M83, Jose Padilla (Cafe del Mar).. not into the really experimental or "true" ambient stuff, prefer stuff slower, melodic, more structured stuff..

i play the guitar, not as much as i used to back in the day. i was really into the old school speed-metal metallica type shit for a while. and.. copied from myspace..

Jazz is cool too. It's eclectic like how EDM is nowadays, i think.. I also listen to the more traditional shit... A Perfect Circle, NIN, Bush, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, 311, Sublime, Dave Mathews Band, Grand National, M83 is okay on occasion.... My favorite guitarists/bassists: Kirk Hammet, SRV, Hendrix, EVH, Flea, Cliff Burton, Tom Morello.. Favorite drummers would probably be Lars Ulrich, Dave Grohl, Danny Carey (that guy is fuckin crazy), Chad Sexton, Gene Krupa, John Bonham

Tom Fuckin' Petty (said in similiar reverance as Ferry Fucking Corsten is), Nine Inch Nails, Ani DiFranco, Bjork, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos, Enigma, Melissa Etheridge, U2, Flogging Molly, etc.

I love music - the only exceptions are some country, opera, and some classical.

I listen to Irish drinking songs.


P.S. For those mentioning jam bands, I am surprised that no one has mentioned Widespread Panic - I got into them when they were still up coming in mid-90's and always loved them.

WSP is actually what turned me on to electronic music, although they are a southern jam rock band and use no electronica whatsoever, they made me realize that I liked to dance for 3-5 hours straight, occassionally while nicely fucked up.

And the rest is history.

right before i got hooked on edm in 1999 (via pvd and chicane's saltwater), i was a HUGE hiphop/rnb/rap nerd.. i think i have about 300 cds. now i can't listen to too much of that stuff, makes me nauseous!

Pearl Jam just rocked my face off @ the United Center. Three encores. Wow.

outside of EDM i listen to underground hip-hop, classical and more often than not, alternative rock. anyone from the milwaukee area i'm sure is familiar with 102.1... anything on that station can usually be found on my playlist. the bands i listen to the most, atleast right now, although i fluctuate are Coldplay, Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, Live and 311...

Best concert I've ever seen in my life was Pearl Jam in like October 2000 @ Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI. Biggest outdoor amphitheatre in the country, it was roughly 40 degrees (Maybe colder, you could see the steam pouring off of the band in the cold weather), and I was on 2 hits of the best acid I'd ever had in my life. They played an encore that was essentially another entire set (Like 5 or 6 songs), it was unreal.

I think I was sick for like a month afterwards, but worth it 100%.

Pearl Jam is easily one of my favorite bands ever, I've even have a PJ tattoo on my right leg...
