That overused sound of children laughing...

Basically it's the same sound of a child laughing that I've recognised from movies, TV commercials and computer software. Specifically I've heard it in the opening scene of 'Face Off' when Travolta and son are on the carousel, at just under 90 minutes into 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' on some 'Encarta' software (can't recall the version) in the intro music and I think a 'Direct Line' car insurance advert.

My brother's also noticed it pops up in different places, I was just wondering if anyone else had in this instance.

I'll record and upload the sound if no-one gets what I'm talking about.

Uh huh. I just find it amusing that these big projects rely on canned audio. It's obviously the easy option, just a bit cheap is all

there are spools and spools of sound effect cds that major companies use. all royalty free and what not. no sense sending a guy out to record children laughing when they already have it in their computers.

Posted by Aquascape on Apr-25-2006 21:52:

Yeah I know. Like I said it's the easy thing to do and like you say more practical. It just feels a bit cheap. No big deal though, I just find it funny wondering where I'll hear it next.

dont you find their laughter scary? most scary movies have that same sound...

Posted by BTG on Apr-25-2006 21:53:

theres one sound effect i've heard twice.

Once in starcraft, when you click on the acadamy...and once in southpark, either the movie, or the episode when satan gets back together with sadam.

Not really but then it doesn't have a scary association for me. I've most recently heard it in 'Four Weddings'. Go figure.

Play Diddy Kong Racing for N64. When you first turn it on and the Rare logo is shown, those same children sound effects are heard.

And yes you hear that same sound all the time.

There is a female police dispatcher on a police radio clip that I've heard hundreds of times in television, film and computer games. Does anyone know the one I am talking about or can provide specific examples of it's use?
