GU: 10 Years

Taken from RA...

Pioneering record label Global Underground has reached a decade in its lifespan. Joining the likes of Om Records and Whoop! the 10 year milestone is a huge reflection of the consistently good production line that has emanated from the Newcastle Upon Tyne HQ.

Sasha reflects on the impact the GU series has had on the scene to date:
"They were the first people to put the photograph of the DJ on the cover, and really push with huge poster campaigns. They took an underground culture of mix tapes and really made it look real and made the music industry sit up and take notice."
To celebrate the longevity of the label that has helped spread the underground to the higher ground, GU will be releasing its massive 10 year anniversary disc that spans across an insane 4-Disc Limited set along with the triple-vinyl that is expected to hit shelves in May.

Entirely vintage Trance, Progressive and House with the bonus 4th Disc compiling Original Music from the GU: Music line, this is a defining look at the history of one of the most successful electronic music outputs.

looks great, who mixed the CDs? Sasha?

Posted by Dean Millson on Apr-26-2006 05:42:

In the past The Forth have mixed all of the general GU releases (destinations, departures etc), so i would assume that they would have mixed this also, but not exactly sure.

Posted by tachyon on Apr-26-2006 05:43:

someone said in the GU board that release date is 15th May. is this worldwide or AU will be left behind?

Yeah, what he said. It's like a who's who and what's what of progressive music...

Don't think I've heard anything from the 87 - 95 mix apart from the Sasha track, but I reckon that'll probably be the most interesting CD of the lot.

better than 40 seconds of breakdown for every 1 minute of music

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the obligatory trance bash.

This has nothing to do with trance.

It has everything to do with having too many tracks on each cd.

this isn't tech

Tathi - if you don't like the way trance songs are structured, eat a dick.

My point was that it's still possible to produce a good, musically viable mix without waiting until the last 8 bars to mix out of every track. Depending on how it's put together, sometimes more = more.

looks awesome. will keep an eye out for it

but certain genres lend themselves to that style of mixing. Tech is one. I don't believe prog is, in my opinion you need to give it time to do its thing. I'm not advocating 7 minutes per track or anything, because you could get away with shorter stuff, but I don't think 3 minutes per track (shorter than a radio edit) is appropriate.

Well if you're talking about the atmospheric, "musical journey" type prog then I agree - the tracks need time to build and it's probably not going to work if you try to mix in or out of them half-way through - but based on the tracklists I don't think this is going to be that type of mix, especially not the first or third CDs. I could be wrong and the entire thing could end up sounding like a giant pile of shit, but with tracklists like those I think it'd take a musical genius like Tiesto to make them sound bad.

Posted by sezzy on Apr-26-2006 06:32:

god always gotta be a bloody debate no matter what topic!

why can't you just say "hmmm that's great!" or "that's nice."

Posted by Trance Nutter on Apr-26-2006 06:34:

I'm not saying its gonna be bad. Cos as Renegade said with tracks like that not even I could make it sound bad.

I'm saying I think it could be better in an "enjoy the music" kind of way if they didn't try to cram so much in.
