Why is America so obsessed with "sex predators"?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12514222/

The article above states that over 1100 "sex predators" were arrested in a week in some state.

I'm just wondering, what's going on? Why is this constantly on the news and such a big conversation topic in America?

If this is indeed some psychiatric disorder, one would expect it to occur with the same frequency in other countries around the world, but I haven't heard about such an obsession in foreign media. So, does this occur more often in the US, than elsewhere? And if so, why?

this happens everywhere, not to mention that in other countries sex slaver/trafficing is much more widespread.

Yeah, I remember watching a documentary on CNN about sex trafficing in Europe, and this was focused in Romania. When I lived in Albania, alot of girls were trafficed to Italy and used as prostitues, so its much more spread in Europe then America.

Its just fuckin sick.

yeah i saw that. i think it was followed by a report on how the internet is also being used to track down potential child molestors and sex offenders.

What I don't understand is why can't a male have sex with a 16yr old girl? I mean the girl is old enough to know what she is doing. Its not a pedophile or molestor for an older guy to like a girl half his age. What would be really disturbing is a 40yr old guy having sex with someone younger than 15.

i mean don't you guys think lowering the age will make a whole lot less molestors or pedos in jail?

On another note I too saw that doc on CNN. That was in Milan and the that romainian girl was hot! If more prositutes looked like her I would really love prositutes.

firstly, it would depend on which state & country youre in. in australia, most states have an age of consent of 16.

no. typically paedophiles are named for their taste in young, pre-pubescent children. thus lowering the age of consent, to say, 16, will mean almost nothing in the context you are talking.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Apr-28-2006 01:05:

oh, to answer the original question- its such a big topic coz americans are obsessed with sex. just read a news report about a couple in the US that are suing a school for reading a same-sex fairy tale ffs

Posted by Lepanto on Apr-28-2006 01:16:

you ignoramous. before making stupid comment read the WHOLE article . ANY and EVERY sex ed article or any article involving sex has to be APPROVED. you know, a system of bureaucracy. so much for your verbal diarrhea.

you fvcking cretin. so, if kids were read sleeping beauty or cindarella there would need to be approval? bullshit you moron. the story didnt have anything to do with sex ed, just a prince that fell in love with a boy instead of a girl. if the story involved a fairy tale about a boy and a girl no one would be causing a stink.

so much for your typically moronic viewpoint.

who you calling a cretin with your gobbledegook remarks? I GOT THAT FROM THE ARTICLE YOU INCOMPETANT MAMELUKE! READ YOU TIT!

States the organization: "Lexington school officials continue to claim that homosexuality and homosexual relationships do not does not constitute human sexual relationships and thus do not trigger the Massachusetts parental notification law Ch. 73 Sec. 32a."

WHAT, BIIIIIIIIIIIITCH?!?!?!

parent's are mad because:

It was explained to the couple that since same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, discussion of the matter is fair game -- parents do not have to be informed before or after the issue is presented. Kramer reportedly told the Wirthlins that the theme of the day was "weddings" and the teacher wanted to present all points of view on the subject.

"We are outraged," parents Rob and Robin Wirthlin told the local Article 8 Alliance. "This is a highly charged social issue. Why are they introducing it in the second grade? And we cannot present our family's point of view to our children if they don't tell us what they're saying to them."

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Apr-28-2006 03:08:

ok, for once i have to admit, you have totally confused me.

first you say
quote:

ANY and EVERY sex ed article or any article involving sex has to be APPROVED. you know, a system of bureaucracy. so much for your verbal diarrhea

so i stated that it wasnt a sex ed story, thus your remarks are irrelevant.

then you post this

which, to me is just agreeing with what i originally posted; that yanks are so obsessed with sex and sexuality that a fairytale can become such a heated issue, and had the story been exactly the same with a boy & a girl, there wouldnt have been any kind of concern raised at all.

*thoroughly confused*

Sad, it seems parents don't even have time these days to ask their kids "What did you learn in school today?"

As for the topic of the thread....
One reason I think that contributes in the USA's obsession about sex-crimes is its feminist need to equalize men and women, and in bringing these issues to the forefront as is done, I think American women are able to been seen as "more equal" in US society than in almost any other society I've encountered that has an equal or similar crime rate.

Posted by Lepanto on Apr-28-2006 03:20:

Yoepus, i think the point is that the parents DID ask the kids what they learned in school and weren't satisfied with the answer.

America as a collective whole has a very unhealthy, repressed view of human sexuality, and I believe this is the primary reason why the mainstream media plays this stuff up so much.

I mean this really goes without saying.

In terms of evolutionary psychology the two purposes of human life are survival and reproduction (replication of our genes), so scientifically, this repressed view of sexuality is one that is intrinsically against nature.

It is really our more primitive brains, such as the reptilian and mammalian that run the show even though many people like to believe it is their conscious mind (ego) that runs the show.

Religion and culture are all constructs of the ego, so they have little significance when our more primitive brains want us to do something (i.e. survive, mate).

Of course in a country of 300 million, there is a great variety of people with different mating strategies and this plays itself out at the cultural and political levels.

Actually in most any large society you will find a range of individuals with different mating strategies that people feel strongly about. One will be dominant, but not exclusively so.

Maybe not Islam, but did you know that Judaism and Buddhism are nowhere near as harsh and strict about sex as Christianity?

anyone who has sex with a child does not deserve to walk this earth. CASE CLOSED.
