Review: Danny Torrence @ Sonic

What an amazing night. Went to kabin first, had a blast there. Came home for abit then head over to Sonic around 2. No lineup at all which was nice! Got into the club, it was pretty empty but Nevio was spinning some dirty tunes to get us started. The place filled up just enough. Talk about a beautiful crowd, tons of gorgeous ladies. Danny Torrence came on around 4.... and the dancefloor just became his playground. His style of house music is so dirty, at times the music was too good to even dance, I was just in shock. He rocked the place all night long, his mixes were perfect, AMAZING track selection, hadn't heard many of those songs before that's for sure. Definately an underated DJ. This guy is totally ready to go international. One of the best sets I've ever heard at a club. This was one of the best nights I've had out in awhile. I can't wait to spend the rest of my saturdays at Sonic. It's so nice to be home again. I sure hope they have him coming back often~!!!!

Went to zone around 9ish... apparently they cleared people out for 2 hours because of a gas leak or something. Paranoid Jack & Nathan Burrato KILLED it.

DANNY TORE-IT-UP TORRENCE!!!

Holy, what a wicked set! It's been a long time since I've dance that hard & that long... it was just SO GOOD, I couldn't stop if I wanted to!

Great crowd at Sonic... lots of kick @ss dancers, which made the vibe unreal... and Danny had no problem delivering the goods. I can completely understand why he's one of Montreal's best residents & hope he plans to make MANY more trips to Toronto because he's just made a lot of new fans.

My body is completely destroyed right now, but despite the pain, I have the biggest smile on my face! Thanks so much Sonic!

What an incredible night. I am very impressed by Danny Torrence. I'm so glad I got this demo CD. Listening to it brings back memories of the insane set he played last night.

Copyright - He Is is now my theme song for Sonic.

Danny Torrence is awesome...im not sure if I saw him in Montreal or not....i can't remember

Wow is Sonic gorgeous. I really like the flattened floor - I used to like being able to watch from the higher steps and be able to see the party, but now you're just enveloped by the party. Though I caught myself almost tripping a couple times because I was expecting the stairs
Tunes were ridiculous - RIDICULOUS. I think I said "sick!" 30 times. Nevio _REALLY_ impressed me, absolutely amazing, any Danny just blew the roof off. I guess it was missing a couple weekends out but I haven't been as sore as I was sunday morning in a long time.

So we got to the club shortly after 2am, and to my surprise it was no more than 100 people.... then I remembered - this IS an afterhours club, so with Nevio playing some nice chuggy warmup goodness, we all just began to soak up the night.

Come close to 3am, Nev was just starting to get warmed up - and so was the crowd. In my opinion, Nevio is truly at the top of his game when he is opening for a harder edged/tribal influenced headliner. Less vocals, more rippling basslines, pure dirtyness. Not to take away from what he does when opening up for guys like Morales, Knuckles, Stephan, etc....

Danny Torrence and his brother show up just after 3am, and you could just tell he was as happy as a pig in shit to be able to play in a booth/venue like this away from Montreal. His bro then goes to me, 'fuck - this booth is so Stereo, i love the red.'. Danny, sporting the vintage John Elway jersey, introduced himself (very nice guy), and asked me if i thought anyone would be interested in his new demo. I gave him the 'DUH!' look, then gave them to all the recently converted 'Torrence-Heads' who caught his set at BeB.

Shortly before 4am, Nevio is really starting to get into the groove, and Torrence steps up to the decks. By now, the club was a good size - but the best part, was 90% of the people it seemed, were rocking it out on the dancefloor (and not chilling in the back area). Danny didn't hesitate in blasting out the tunage. Heavy, grinding, chuggy tribal music right off the bat. I felt like maybe he played a little hard to start his set off, but i really enjoyed the softer sounds he shifted to closer to 8am.

He then played the track of the night for me, hands down - Ame - Rej. Such a minimal, true afterhours, drugged out melodic gem. And it sounded amazing on that system. Perfect time to drop it too.... early Sunday morning, when only the true heads are there to witness it. It seems to be a reoccuring theme in this venue - the tunes are at their best from 8am onwards.....

I actually enjoyed myself more so on this night than i did on the opening. It seemed the people who came for this, were there for the music, and for the experience - rather than just going to 'check out' a new venue. True afterhours at it's finest.....

Thanks again Jeff to you, and the rest of the Sonic staff for bringing us such an amazing venue. I also had a better time Saturday than I did opening night for the same reason, everyone was there to shake some ass and enjoy the music. So many good times to be had there. I can't wait!
