"Breeder" Tracks = Ahead Of Its Time

Just a quick comment.

Tilt always seems to be mentioned when it comes to pre circa 2000, but I think Breeder had a major influence on what was the sound at the time as well.

As stupid as it might sound, they were one of the few producers who defied "underground". Hearing a track from them was like hearing what the entire scene was about at the time. They had that dark, raw thumping sound. Nothing ever sounded out of place in their productions (probably due to all the outboard equipment they used heavily).

Even though the "Breeder" guise died (not "guys", they're still alive) a long time ago you can still hear their influence on many artist today in tracks like Openclouds most popular productions "Life" which draws heavily from Breeders - Twilo Thunder.

Sigh, the tracks at that time were so honest. Moving on isn't bad, and their are some guys out there putting some great stuff out now. One can only reminist. The tracks from that time sounded so... "honest".

Check them out here:

Also highly recomended Sasha's GU:13, if you can afford it, and shame on you if you haven't heard... The ultimate bible for the peak of trance, and the undeniably best dj who was doing it at the time. Paul Oakenfolds 1999 World Tour EM's (all this is almost ten years ago, shit I'm getting old).

Not to someone that started listening to trance before that time.

ahh, so you are more l33t than the topic starter! now we just wait for someone who started listening to trance before you did and watch the line develop.

Breeder are FTW!

All their productions are top class.
And don't forget their excellent remixes such as Orbital - Nothing Left (Breeder remix), Planet Perfecto - Not Over Yet 99 (Breeder's It is Now remix)

Posted by Ishkur on May-08-2006 13:07:

It's called Tech Trance.

The Chain is one of the greatest Tech Trance tunes ever.

Breeder - New York FM (Van Bellen Remix)
Breeder - Rockstone
Tilt - I Dream (Resurrection Mix)
Tilt - Children (Tilt's Courtyard Mix)
Space Manoeuvres - Stage One (Separation Mix)
Quivver - She Does (Quivver Mix)
Amethyst - Futura 2000 (Danny Howells vs. Amethyst Mix)
Science Department - Repercussion (Funk Function's Future Mix)
Odessi - Moments Of Space

Make sure to check out GU 009, GU 014 and the Northern Exposure series as well.

Dave Seaman also played quite a few incredible prog/tech trance tracks in the late 90s/early 2000s. Some tracks that come to mind from his mix cds:

Pindrop - Corporate Entertainment
Polaroid - So Damn Beautiful (Amethyst remix)
Brothers Love Dubs - 1-800-MING
Gloat - Skidaddle (easily in my top 5 favorite songs, thank god they released it!)
Adamski - One of the People (Force Mass Motion remix)
Elisium - Part One
Minimalistix - Struggle For Pleasure

EDIT:

Two others from Northern Exposure 2 that simply cannot go w/o mention:

Art of Silence - Teach Me (Mantra's Clean and Serene remix)
Light - Panfried

The rest of the world, including me, seems to prefer to call it progressive trance though

Nice tracks yeah.. I love all three NE's. Especially disc 1 of NE1

Breeder - NY FM (Van Bellen remix). man what a tune that is.

Sputnik (New York FM Mix) would be my favourite of theirs, haven't heard a poor Breeder track though.

Actually, I meant all of the Northern Exposure sets, not specific discs from any one set. I do like the second disc of NE 1 a bit more, though they both blow away most mix sets I've ever heard.

You know, I'm not really sure I could narrow it down to five. I'd probably have to do it by genre, but let's see...

Vengeance - Song To The Siren (original mix) - AKA Lost Witness from Oakenfold's Another World
EMF - They're Here (D:ream Dream remix)
Dr. Atomic - Schudelfloss (High On Hedonism Mix)
Quivver - Twist & Shout (original mix)
Gloat - Skidaddle

There's a good five, though I could come up w/ quite a few more

Am i the only one thinking that The Chain and Twilo Thunder sounds very outdated nowadays? It doesn't generate the same feel as before.

Posted by T2Runner on May-08-2006 22:32:

Funny.. I was just listening to a Breeder remix of an Orbital track when I came across this thread.

Breeder = awesome.

Posted by Nell on May-08-2006 23:29:

brings back the memories. this is proper music, not the crap taht's dished out today. great stuff, thanks for the reminder about van bellen's mix of ny fm!

Posted by Lunar Phase 7 on May-09-2006 02:31:

Most of their stuff I enjoy, can't stand Tyrantantic though.

That dumb ass roar used even in the chill mix. It just really dont seem to go well at all with the track for me.

Maybe that was the idea? Either way, I really dont like that track.

Breeder - The Chain (Babealicious Mix)
Breeder - Twilo Thunder

Posted by Sean Walsh on May-09-2006 20:23:

Twilo Thunder is one of my fav tracks of all time.

Posted by jc on May-10-2006 01:22:

Simon and Rowan are getting back in the studio together. Dont think they'll be making any of the old breeder stuff though..

twilo thunder, greatest prog trance ever!
