If graphics is all it has going for it (I'm not including the 6-way sensing gimmick or the fact that there's no universal online service) I'm afraid this costly beast will not fair too well.

That day would probably be the right time to start waiting on line to pick up one of these units.

Oh and, by the way, with the cheaper model:

* You lose 40GB (20GB base vs. 60GB)
* You lose HDMI output
* You lose MemoryStick / SD / CompactFlash slots
* You lose 802.11 b/g wireless

On the bright side:

* You save $100

the fact that it'll be equipped with blu-ray is probably what will sell it as an electronic device with the capabilities of a gaming system, although not one of the most versatile gaming units out there, it'll be significantly priced lower than your average blu-ray player. i'm hoping all this negative spec is just another marketing ploy to WOW consumers once it drops. It's a marketing tactic, I admit it and it's evident other companies use it to, ie: Nintendo Wii etc.

Drum up negative feedback (which evidently shows the mass interest) to down play expectation, then release a heavily modified (from original spec sheet) during launch. It might even drive the price upwards to the $700's if in fact this is what they are doing.

Unfortunately, Blu-Ray does not have an established base yet. The first few titles are slated to release next month (I might be mistaken) and the prices are that of DVDs when they first came out. I can definitely see the device being used simply as a multimedia package, a few years down the line, when there are more titles to purchase for cheaper prices and when more people will own higher definition televisions but until then, it's only going to appeal to 3 core audiences: the Sony fanbase, the Blu-Ray fanbase, and people willing to dish out the money because they have it (the rich folk).

In other news, the chances of the final specs changing from what was presented the other night are close to zero. Even if that, they will be so slight that it wouldn't matter. Sony has basically laid all it has on the table right now. Just gotta wait and see how it all plays out.

Blu Ray will be around for a long time though and thats why sony is wiling to take a hit this year knowing its going to be really expensive. having a 27gig standard disc gives development of hd images alot more room. there have been reports they can scale blue ray dvds to 200gig per disc.

but yeah the dvd drive was the most expensive component, i also read they were having big problems with the cell processor yields and thats gotta be solved before august at the latest if we want to see those price tags.

So very true.

I'll wait until the price goes down to purchase one...

Or maybe I'll just pull an XBOX 360 and purchase 2 at release. My 360 was free thanks to selling the other for $800 bucks. Win!

Sony's gotta get their act together. Their release date looms.

Sony is retarded. Have they learned nothing from the Xbox 360 launch? Nobody wants to get a stripped down system and in their case, especially not one that ultimately can't be upgraded to match the more expensive system.

It's stupid of them to waste time and money making a second production line for the cheaper system. They should just devote all their facilities to production of the premium system and then maybe develop a cheaper system after demand for the premium one has died down a year or so later.

Edit: Just saw this spec sheet on HardOCP...

At least they'll both be able to read SACDs.

Actually, it seems like all those options that will be removed can be restored with the 60 gig HDD. Considering the HDDs are removable, it shouldn't be too awkward to see people purchase the cheaper (but not really) bundle and only later on purchase the HDD which gets them the full capabilities of the PS3. Not a bad idea for those that are strapped for cash but still want to get their hands on some gorgeous games and good franchises.

I don't believe those prices are official. Those prices should be a bit lower than Xbox360.. as planned I believe.

I haven't been excited about a FF game since X to be honest. And before that, VIII. So FFXIII should be a good one although it's not turned based. ;-)

The prices have been set in stone, unfortunately. I don't remember any plan to have the price lower than the 360's. (source?)

Ken Kutaragi has even gone on the record, before, and stated that the device will not be an easy purchase. And that was months ago! Might have not even been this year. Hmm.

Risky business.

You should invest in the Wii, as well. A few Final Fantasy titles will be released for the console. You'll see many vids and screenshots of them come tomorrow. Maybe even today!

Do you have a link to where you're getting that info from? Does that mean the 60gb hard drive will have an hdmi port, a card reader, and a wireless transmitter and cost $100?

My point though is that it's stupid for Sony to waste production capacity on the cheaper model when there will be plenty of demand for the more expensive one at least until the summer of 2007.

I doubt the HDD will be $100, standalone. I'm guessing $200, at best.

No linkage however, why else would the HDD be removable (there are a few reasons which might not bode well with my answer... lol. But read on, anyway)? Also, it would be totally unfair for the people to purchase a console and not be able to use it for it's intended purpose (superior graphics, wireless gameplay and compatability with various formats). Does Sony intend consumers to purchase a whole new PlayStation 3 to get all the things the lesser model doesn't employ?

It is! I'm not arguing that at all. I wouldn't be surprised if the 360 Core bundle will start disappearing off shelves, via Microsoft's orders, so as to only sell the Premium Bundle.

It's all just a matter of offering some affordable units, at start. Some people actually don't mind the "bare bones" version.

Posted by InterMilan31 on May-09-2006 16:38:

FUCK YA! Putting my money away already for this. Gonna splash for the 600.

Posted by BiG MiKE on May-09-2006 16:42:

My god, FFXIII looks amazing. Just saw the video. If that's how you play in real time, then Killzone's video is real time as well. Has to be.. 360 better watch out, seriously.

Posted by Porky on May-09-2006 16:52:

i think i'm gonna go to all the EB Games stores today as I can possibly find and put deposits on any launch PS3's. That way I can sell them on ebay right before xmas and become super rich.

i learned my lesson from xbox360. this one will sell out like hotcakes and the demand should be even crazier than the xbox360.
