Summer Jobs

Okay...so here's my rant.

Last summer I didn't start looking for jobs until way late in the summer. I ended up getting a really good paying job...so whatever.

But this year I met with a career advisor in March and have been slowly looking for summer jobs since then. I was hoping to find a summer job in the field of Criminology. I've handed up SO many resumes and have called, emailed and followed up to make sure I'm interested. You know what I got? I've recieved numerous responses saying that only there are only volunteer opportunities or no positions available. A number of people I haven't even heard back from. I've had 5 interviews...all went very well, in fact my last one went EXTREMELY well. I get a call on Monday - sorry we've already filled the position! AHHHHHH!!

I'm so discouraged right now. My advisor tells me I've been doing the right thing all along, so why haven't I gotten a job! I'm so frustrated, I NEED MONEY!!!

That is my rant.

I hear your rant. Looking for a job is frustrating especially when you do as much as you can and get nowhere. Whatever you do, be persistent and keep the momentum going!
"Opportunity often comes in disguised in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat".
"Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent".

I know your pain. Couldn't get an internship this year so I'm just working as a research assistant.

well said.

Also, while it is pretty obvious that the people you are dealing with are a little anal, look at the situation such that you are not doing something right. You could check out a job site like monstertrak.com/.ca and take a look at what skills companies require for the job you want and redesign your resume based on those requirements. All the best.

That suckss...

But keep the optimism on...Look at it this way, when you do get your job you will appreciate it a lot more than you would have otherwise without trying enough...I guess struggling is what makes winning fun...good luck Lisa!!!!

I'm sorry, I don't want to be a downer.. but I have a really good friend who graduated Criminology from U of T with a 96% total Average.. and she still can't find a job here in Toronto in that field after two years... I talked to her a lot and she said that she would have no problem finding a job in the States however in Canada it's very difficult. Keep trying I don't mean to discourage you but think about working in the U.S as an option. Goodluck!

No I haven't...I wouldn't even know where to start though. I'm only looking for a summer job for a student, I have one more year to go in my under grad.

My dad just told me the Windsor Police Association called and would like to set up a meeting. I'm not gonna get my hopes TOO high up though, I don't want to be uber disappointed again.

I find the mentality "always hope for the best, but dont expect it" helps girl

thats the way i try to look at things to avoid disappoints in situations... the key is that you still have that hope

I once got a job for the Guvern.... I meant Government as a case management officer in the penitentiary system. Job was handle the convicts' files, review them, meet with the perps, and recommend if they should get back to society early or not.

Civil Service jobs pay well over time, almost impossible to get fired, and you retire nicely. I have a B.S.Sc and took the intro crim courses, and I got in. Interesting work.

lisa you should really emphasize on networking and just trying to talk to as many people as you can. build contacts in everyplace possilbe and jump on any oppurtunity you see...even if it seems out of reach. impressions are everything so if you leave a lasting one with someone you never know what they may offer you one day. don't give up babe....things will fall into place

I feel your pain. I've been looking for a job since March, and hell - I even sent in a few applications for student summer jobs back at the start of March.

I've also had 3 recruiters cold-call me out of the blue, gone to three interviews, sent out atleast 20 resumes -- and I am still jobless.

The problem I am running into -- "Sorry, we want a full time/perm employee", so I'm now starting to lie about planning on going back to school.

I think I'm going to give this untill the end of the month, and unless I have any solid leads I'm just gunna apply at fucken Tim Hortons or something. I'd much rather get a job in IT/programming/web development or something - but its proving to be a bitch.

Even applying for contract jobs/etc I see on craigslist and its not getting me anywhere.

We're hiring 1200 people over 5 years... in Halifax

When I was in school i pretty much took any job I could find for the summer because they were so hard to find. I worked one summer turning boxes around the corner as they came down a belt.

Good luck in your search. Something will turn up!
