Teh Review
Listening and reviewing set as I write this. Started off great. Thorough review to come shortly.
First off, I must say I was a little hesitant prior to downloading this set simply because I never like seeing the same track in a set twice, whether its remixed or not. However, I did recognize a few artists to my liking but have not heard any of these tracks before so I was very intrigued at this tracklisting. Now the following was reviewed using my headphones. I'm going to have a couple more listens to this tomorrow and edit anything I feel I have misjudged you on.
For now here it is:
01) XLNT way to start off the set. Nice thick juicy bassline to get things started. Decent vocals.
02) 5:05 -- Perfect bass transition. XLNT flow so far. Soothing vocals with that piano riff coming in right after.
03) 11:10 -- Fairly good transition. Could have completely cut out the highs on track 2. This Deep/Tech-house track didn't seem to fit right for me this early on. Sounded like a breather song making the flow take a downturn.
04) 15:43 -- Good transition. Very atmospheric feel to this song right from the start. 16:30 -- Clips for a second, nothing major. Trippy echoing riff to this track alongside a piano.
05) 20:40 -- Not the smoothest of transitions as you slowly built the bass up but it worked here. Were you slowing down the pitch at 22:28ish or was that part of the song? If so cool effect for a nice buildup at 23:14.
06) 25:00 -- Another good transition. This track is more to my liking with some interesting French Vocals with a nice driving bassline accompanied by high taps and trippy riffs. Definately a winner.
07) 30:00-30:04 -- Drowned out track sixs highs but was a little slow bringing in track seven's. 30:47 -- Completely cut track sixs bass which was good but I think you should have stuck to another track with a much heavier bassline or brought this track in when it started to kick at 32:33.
08) 35:47 -- I would have transitioned here. 36:03 -- Nice bassline again, transition worked perfect here nonetheless. 38:02 -- Loving this track right now. Very cool bird sounding riff in the backround. I would have attempted to mash this remix together with the original. Winner for sure.
09) 40:18 -- Track nine slowly transitioning in to make the final bass transition at 41:17. Very good. Not entirely a fan of songs that have that echoing type bass to it but this track worked here.
10) 45:07 -- Very good bass cut. Should have brought the volume up immediately when you cut the bass though. This song has extremely nice vocals. Spine tingling echoes. XLNT melodies with a bassline that seemed just right. Definately a winner.
11) 49:31 -- Ahh so close to finishing this set on a very high note but you brought those high taps in way too loud and far too sudden. They would have worked perfect at 49:36. 49:50 -- Bass transition was great. Last track seemed very loud. Great track to finish off setting the mood with that end of the night feel to it. Although, I am not a fan of breakbeat I would tend to throw it in halfway throughout a set to give the listener a break. This was definately an end of the night chill out beat. Good choice.
Conclusion:
Although, I am as always very bias towards any and all sets including mine I found this one to be quite soothing. Generally speaking I love the atmospheric moody sets that make you feel inspired. This was damn near close. I had a few moments throughout that gave me some chills and brought back some unforgettable clubbing memories. As far as selecting the same track twice in a set, leave that to Oakenfold
-- Nonetheless, they were both bangingly good which turned my opinion somewhat around. As stated though, I would have either tried to mash them together or use one or the other. Mixing throughout was very good with the odd adjustment needing to be made here and there. I noticed that throughout most of your transitions you would increase the volume suddenly rather than slowly let them creep in. Maybe thats your style and or maybe its just me? :P All in all this was definately a nice set to listen to especially this late at night before getting ready for some shut eye. The flow of the set was fairly good but I was definately annoyed with your selection of track 3. I would have started the set with it.
Tomorrow will have me pounding this on the big speaker system so expect a few edits in this post including my final rating.
Now then as for the rating:
Mixing -- 8.5/10
Flow -- 7/10
Track Selection -- 7.5/10
Set as a whole -- 7.5/10
Download this set ASAP if your into a soothing, moody, atmospheric journey into deep progressive house. Thats all for now.
Ciao! 8^)
goddamn thats one hell of a review
Hi mate,
Thanks for the great review! First let me tell you that I highly appreciate your effort to write me such a thorough review. This is the largest review I've ever seen!
I don't have the mix right now but later on I will listen to it carefully and read your review at the same time. This way I can see what you exactly had in mind and will take your recommendations. And I will also give some explanation to why I did certain things while mixing.
Other than that I'd like to tell you that I did not work on this mix very hard and did not put that much effort in it. I mean that I mixed it very spontaneously. I just had few new tracks that I liked very much and decided to mix them and while mixing I was recording. At the end I found out that the mix came out pretty good and decided to post it. I am currently exploring and mostly playing a little bit different style progressive than that but it looks like I am doing better with these mixes.
If you are interested and if you have some more time I would like to give you to check out another mix of mine which is older (August 2005) but has had lots of positive feedback. Here it is :
