Dealing with Wannabe DJ's

So here's the deal. I'm a member of a forum that specializes on Counter-Strike and e-games. I'm not a fan of computer games, I'm just a member because it's a nice little afternoon-time-killing.

Anyways. There is a problem with 'DJs' on that forum. You know, the guys who mix the same five very commercial tunes together in Soundforge into a 10 min long mix and calls themselves DJ's because of it. I mean, this shit ain't even beatmatched, shit it's not even cutmixed!

What to do about them? Should you direct them down the path of learning the trade, ie internet guides etc, or just ignore them? There are so many of them too, I'm thinking about starting a tread in there with a guide to DJ'ing.

You know what kind of guys I'm talking about. And don't pretend you're not disturbed by them.

btw. I've been dreaming about visiting a club where Steve Angello plays. Also had a dream a couple weeks ago where he visited my school. What does that mean? :S

I have to admit it anoyys the crap out of me when people go and download pirated versions of traktor or get virtual dj. Try use the autobeatmatch and still cant even make a sensible mix (this is not even counting the fact that they are trying to mix the worst dance/cheese trance known to man kind) and they call themselfs djs. Then when some find out i am a bedroom dj they have the balls to act asif i dont know what im talking about. They are like "pfft...ow yea? what do you use?" I tell them i have technics 1200s and then they ask "haha whats that?"

I guess its kinda funny because these people may actualy have some kind of brain damadge they just dont know about...
They also dont have any problem with playing the worst quality downloaded from kazaa mp3s possible...

Posted by Trance Nutter on May-12-2006 12:53:

meh, just ignore them. Its not as if they are any sort of competition for you are they?

Get together a decent promo mix and when they post their shite post your mix. Don't make a comment about theirs, just say "hey, check out mine too".

A guy a friend was seeing supposedly did "a bit of djing", and she bought along a cd he put together for a bbq we were orgainising at uni. After having it playt for about 15 mins (it was similar to what you guys describe, I call it radio fades, no beatmatching just fade one out and the other in) and her telling me it was this guy she asked me what did I think - "I don't rate it at all, sorry". She knew it was the truth cos she knows I know what i'm talking about.

Posted by Ghost Raver on May-12-2006 13:10:

Yeah, just ignore them. And I'm not disturbed by them :P I just don't care about them. And no, I'm not one of them.

Posted by Nsonic on May-12-2006 13:38:

Ignore those who call themselves DJ even when its very obvious they don't have any skill. Not just a slight beatmatching error, but major, 'omg-awesome-mix-coz-fader-is-over-there-now' kinda stuff.

But to those that are genuinely interested in Djing, as in, people that don't just make grand claims about their skill....they should be enlightened.

Gotta start getting people with the right attitude i spose, is what im getting at.

So, in other words, it bothers you to see other people enjoying themselves?

You got a really fair point there.

Trance Nutter: Yeah, I what you're talking about radio fades ;P It's the funniest wannabe-DJ-technique ;P What are they thinking really?
But the "Hey, check out my mix too" thing never really helps. The answers most likely are: "I didn't like it, that was too long. Try making it to 7 mins and it will be better. Trust me". Wtf?

Not if it ivolves trying to make themselfs look realy cool and not if it involves giving djing a bad name...

Posted by Allied Nations on May-12-2006 15:28:

OMG BOTH TRACKS ARE ON AT THE SAME TIME!

KA-THUNK KA-THUNK KA-THUNK

SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE HORSERACES!

No srsly fuck them. Dreaming about Steve Angello? I dream about the day he uses his talent properly.

Posted by Psiweaver on May-12-2006 16:58:

yeah those people annoy me but if they seem interested to learn more help show them the way and if they like there radio mixes then fuck'em.

honestly judging by the response of almost everyone in this thread, i dont blame those DJs for not wanting to actually get into the "real" DJing when there's nothing but haters here. There are so many different types of DJs, don't bash on a particular kind, if they like mashing songs together and it doesnt even sound good then who cares? it's not like you're a pro dj, and even if you were why would you want to discourage someone from becoming one, ANY type of DJ, they have to spin the shit you like and use the equipment you use to be a DJ? the fact that it bothers you so much just shows how lame this thread is.

+1

i dun care about how they mix and shit or how it sounds .. what annoys me the most are ppl who knows jack abt djing or equipement setup.. and they buy all the best equipment... (and what i mean by that is ppl who don't even know what a cartridge is .. or what a stylus is .. or how to balance a tonearm .. ) and they keep asking u what is a cartridge?? what does it do?? .. what is a stylus?? and what does it do?? ..how do u balance a tone arm? .. thats really pisses me off ... why the hell would they buy something they didn't know how to use.. at least do some research before buying all ur stuff .. god .. sometimes i wonder why they bother .. its like if ur really interested in djing .. u would have known all these things already coz ur interested in it and its not like all those information are not on the net.

Posted by spdandpwr on May-12-2006 20:29:

Well, I think of it this way...if it was only good dj's buying equipment in the first place then most dj hardward companies would not make enough profit to produce good equipment. So the more demand there is for equipment, the cheaper and better stuff we get. Besides there is always people like this even with stuff like sports. People have a nature to feel like they fit in.

there's not any problem with Traktor, I think you can learn a lot with it.

when I use Traktor I did not call myself a DJ, I felt that I wanted to do everything bymyself without the help of a computer. but still you can create great journeys with it, and use a lot of creatyivity.

it just took me 2 weeks after djing 1 year with traktor, to get beatmatched tracks with my CDJ's, so to be honest I don't feel so proud over Traktor Dj's that I know how to beatmatched.

Beatmatching it's a skill a DJ needs to mix tracks, so that will not make a difference with you and another DJ's, Creativity and originality it's what will make you stand out from anothers.

For me it's easier to beatmatch with Cdj's than Traktor.

What you said should be directed to the people who make no sense mixes, as you said witht he top 5 tracks and thinkt hey are the next big DJ, that's very stupid from them.
but for people who make serious mixes with traktor, you hsould think that they are not good, or are not valuable, beacuse you can listen to creative mixes with traktor, while th eother side ther eis someone who knows to beatmatcvh with vinyls or Cdj's, but make nosense mixes. The creative mix should have more respect from me.
on Traktor you sdo osmething, if you us e aprogram like mixmeiter then you are probably not doing so much.

my advice is jut not get against all software Dj's, because there are some good ones out there.

*Cough* Ableton Live *Cough* Sasha *Cough* Paul Van Dyk *Cough*

Posted by Danila on May-13-2006 00:50:

Who cares mate, they arent doing any harm to you.

I think there is nothing wrong with software DJ's. Some people bitch about Ableton and stuff, well if its so easy why don't you do it. I think what matters is what is coming out of the speakers. If a person has no talent beatmatching or phrase matching or harmonic mixing and poor track selection Ableton wont save his ass.

Its same as calling a person who plays soccer just to mess around a poser because he isnt trying making any money from it just wanted to kick the ball around and give it a try or something.

I f#@ken HATE megamixes!!!!

S3nate, you should see a doctor about that cough. Sounds nasty.

Basically, that's all that needs to be said. Sure, it may be frustrating to see people getting attention for putting out an inferior product, but these things sort themselves out. The shite always sinks (and stinks) to the bottom, but the innovators and masters of the trade stand out.

I'd say, do your thing, and respect these radio mixers as much as you can, because hey, at least they're interested in DJing. And with any luck, their motivation will lead them to somewhere like Tranceaddict, where they will turn into the best, most knowledgable elitist flamers on the planet who know all there is to know about trance

Posted by jun139 on May-13-2006 01:55:

well said

i look at it like the high school slut

they know they're a slut, let them be slutty

basically, who cares, are they stealing business from you?

they won't and never will, don't sweat it

people see true talent
