Review: PVD @ Nation

Let me first say that I love PVD... in fact, I'm a self-professed PVD junkie. I always love seeing him live - his energy and his interaction w/ the crowd are almost unparalleled. The venue was great, the crowd was great, and I ran into a few Toronto TAers there. However, this is the first time I can say that I wasnt impressed with PVDs set. He started off with some fast, progressive stuff, and then went into his usual mid-set slow-down He started to pick it up again with some tracks Ive never heard, and I was very happy. Then the last hour of his set was the usual three-song montage we all know so well followed by Time of Our Lives and a few other old tracks. Maybe its because I see him quite often that I thought this set was somewhat stale. . . Oh well, next time he plays in the area, you know Ill be there again

i dunno.. i really liked his set. it was a lot of fun partying at d.c. for the first time. bouncers don't seem as strict and everyone's more laidback. none of that pretentious nyc bs. nation actually seemed more like a rave atmosphere than a club... had a really fun time tho,

Mac & Mac - Listen (Mac Zimms Remix)
Fable - Nightshift
Syndica - Orange Sky
Time of Our Lives
For An Angel
Other Side
The Drill - The Drill
Crush

some of the tracks i remembered..

Never been to Nation, but that type of laidback, not strict behavior must occur only there, because Fur/Glow is a competely different story based on my own perceptions the one time I went and from what I've heard from the DCTAs. In addition to the bouncers, their dress code was more strict than any of the NY clubs that I go to.

If I remember correctly, I got frisked and had to go through a metal detector.

sorry man, they must've thought you looked somewhat fishy...do you?

Posted by nennon on May-13-2006 00:22:

I was there too, I thought it was great. Although I am not a huge fan of techno that PVD was playing in the beginning, it was a good night overall. He is fun to watch and he brings back a lot of trance memories from late 1990s and early 2000s.

He's still great

If that was in reference to me, that night at Glow for Armin, everyone got the same treatment.

Didn't see or meet Umes, Mommy420 or any other TA as usual well expect for Intelligent77. Nation has always had the strong rave scene and looks going for it since the 80's and in fact its great how at NATION theres nmo dresscode there they don't search or pat people at Nation for bigger events plus your allowed to bring glowsitcks, any type of smokes in there. I suggest people check this place out before it closes in July

Upcoming DJ's at Nation are John Digweed and Steve Lawler see ya there

Posted by Dirichlet on May-13-2006 06:31:

I agree about the venue - I was actually somewhat confused; didn't know what to do with myself when I didn't get patted down going into the club Don't get me wrong, I did have a good time... I just would have opted for a slightly different track selection (esp. at the end of the show)... Anywho, Nation will def be sorely missed - I just hope that something else will come along with the same atmosphere

I have been to Pacha NYC a couple of times and have never been searched. I was real suprised by that, i wonder if they still do that.

ohh man I had a great time seeing PVD @ Nations. Didn't really see any of my TA friends. I thought the set was great, especially when he dropped Karen Overton's track. The end was a classic ending with his new For An Angel Remix and an old house tune "Camisra - Let Me Show You".

The Venue is a lil trashy in my oppinion...I like the size of Nation but I prefer the atmosphere and sound system @ FUR.

PVD still got it

I enjoyed PvD's set in the beginning, but I have to agree with Dirichlet, he played the usual suspects at the end. Really enjoyed the people, very friendly and cordial...

The venue was OK, Everything seemed laxed out as far as security, but I guess when your closing in a couple months, who gives a crap anyway.

Big props to DC, I had a great time

I was there and I tried to look for you but there were so many people. I was in the very front for an hour and I got tired of being shoved into the dj booth so I went upstairs and stayed there for the rest of the night. I had an awsome time too! As always. Met some nice people. Beleive me I love PVD too, but meeting new people at these shows is the best. Sorry we missed each other. I should have mentioned what I was wearing like u did. Maybe next time

TranceDut has one of Kris Kat's pics on his sig!! Awesome! She's a buddy of mine..

Of bunch of the philly crew went too; I can't speak for them; but I had a blast. I wasn't searched at the door either; and thought the people there were pretty laid back. Was my first time to Nation; and from the looks of it probably my last unless I go back for Digweed, they are losing a pretty sweet spot down there; it's a shame!

There was only a little bit of cheese in the set; the normal cheese sandwich at the end was a little broken up; but all in all no better way to spend my birthday!

I don't remember a damn for tracks; but I know he through in
Beam "On Your Mind" Sean Tyas Mix as well as another Tyas remix.

BTW; Tyas will be in philly on saturday the 20th; that kid puts on a stellar show!

paul's opening songs bored me but as i later recalled some of the really awesome moments of the night did take place only a little bit after so my memory was a little warped in saying that the first hour bored me. drill vs spasktik, mac and mac... this was all in the first bit. paul's set was a little less predictable than expected. nice meeting manda and jonathan there.

the night was definitely special and i'll never forget (the parts that i remember of ) it. it was bittersweet seeing him at nation knowing it was only one final time. the highlight by far was rory asking paul to encore with face to face...
the third time he asked/reminded paul of his special request, paul took a marker and wrote himself a reminder on his hand. sure enough, before the last 15 minutes, i heard a preview of those overwhelming intro sounds of face to face..... they went away. i freaked out. the song mixed in about 5 minutes later and it was just one of the most intense moment's ever.

after gig # 27 and many years of being a pvd fan... i know very clearly that face to face is my absolute favorite production from pvd. hope we get that and other such amazing tracks out of him in the future.

if you thought he ended predictably this is not the case... paul has not played face to face for 2 or 3 years and it was really something unlikely for him to take that request. what a song.

sassot - empty (ayla and fila rmx)... random ID. i'll throw in more if they come back to me later....
duderstadt- muhanjala is a really nice track.. loved hearing that too.

I think the atmosphere is excellent at Nation. The couple of times I went there I had a lot of fun. I guess it's my love for the minimalistic that makes me like nation: it's just a club, not some glitzy, we pretend to be high-rollers glitzy shit, just a couple of concrete walls, some speakers and that is it.

Anyway, the set was great, I liked the first hour an aweful lot. Wasn't too crowded either, I am sad to see Nation go bye bye.

Oh, and if its real hot for Armin I'm sure someone will end up in their b-day suit sweating their ass off. Maybe u, then I will def. know who u r. Just llike the girl who wore her bra around Nation that night
