Have you thought it might sound empty because the room is too large and its effecting the recording of the vocals?
Smaller rooms will have less echo and sound fuller compared to large rooms where the vocals are bouncing off the walls and really sounding empty.
Most vocal booths are small and get a nice recorded vocal compared to a massive size room. Have you thought about running the vocal through some effects while youre recording them?
Like compression, vintage warmer etc. Or you could just read this article
http://www.tweakheadz.com/how_to_record_vocals.htm
Im no expert on vocals but I hope the tutorial helps you out.

these tips seem useful like but id say why dont you try double tracking the vocals, that way you can layer them up, make them sounds bigger as a whole
