(AP) Man Gets $218 Trillion Phone Bill

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia
A Malaysian man said he nearly fainted when he recieved a $218 trillion phone bill and was ordered to pay up within 10 days or face prosecution, a newspaper reported Monday. advertisement

Yahaya Wahab said he disconnected his late father's phone line in January after he died and settled the 84 ringgit ($23) bill, the New Straits Times reported.

But Telekom Malaysia later sent him a 806,400,000,000,000.01 ringgit ($218 trillion) bill for recent telephone calls along with orders to settle within 10 days or face legal proceedings, the newspaper reported.

It wasn't clear whether the bill was a mistake, or if Yahaya's father's phone line was used illegally after after his death.

"If the company wants to seek legal action as mentioned in the letter, I'm ready to face it," the paper quoted Yahaya as saying. "In fact, I can't wait to face it," he said.

Yahaya, from northern Kedah state, received a notice from the company's debt-collection agency in early April, the paper said. Yahaya said he nearly fainted when he saw the new bill.

Government-linked Telekom Malaysia Bhd. is the country's largest telecommunications company.

A company official, who declined to be identified as she was not authorized to speak to the media, said Telekom Malaysia was aware of Yahaya's case and would address it. She did not provide further details.

Im guessing it's a mistake. For $218 trillion in recent calls, where the heck was he calling to? The Alpha Centauri star system?

Posted by nusty on May-15-2006 14:44:

The most that I spent on one phone call was like $180. That was brutal. I called my friend while he was in Guatemala. My mum freaked out when she opened the bill up! I didn't think it would be so expensive...

This guys cell phone bill: ~218 trillion
Rogers 2004 Revenue: Wireless segment: ~2.7 billion

You'd think its a mistake if his cell phone bill comes out to a value 81000 times greater then the combined annual bill of every rogers user in canada.

use skype. it's free as long as both of you have it. www.skype.com

you just need a broadband or faster internet connection, and I'm guessing by how much you post that you likely do have one.

My family is scattered all over the place and I'll be in Japan for the better part of next year so this how I'm planning to keep the phone costs down.

I'll be there working and training in Martial Arts. It's mainly a way to gain experience in Japanese culture. Afterwards I'm planning on a year in Shanghai and Bejing to do the same with Chinese culture. I'm trying to increase my value to North American corporations looking for Pacific Rim expansion.

This sounds an awful lot like my Bell Mobility bills from January, February, and March.

Fuck that was some awful shit.

Posted by nusty on May-15-2006 22:01:

speaking of cell phone bills... I just had my service shut off again by Sprint!
This has been happening since I left Telus back in January and made the switch. Apparently I don't have enough credit history in the United States yet so I can only have a $150 spending limit. No big deal. Recently my bills have been well within that. (although it was not uncommon for my bills to hit 300 with Telus)
Sprint keeps canceling my long distance plan on me without telling me so I end getting BS'ed into nearly 50 cents a minute for my calls back to Canada! They never even tell me when it happens. one day I have it on my plan so the next day I make calls... two days later my phone gets shut off and I have to spend 3 hours on the phone to get them to give me a refund and turn my service back on.

I'm getting pretty sick of this but none of the other phone companies down here have the same coverage as Sprint (with the exception of Cingluar, but they have the nation's worst customer service and are known for screwing up bills even worse)... So I'm kinda stuck.

I would almost rather still be paying 250-300 a month with telus than have to go through this horse shit every two weeks at some random non convienent time. (I was trying to order flowers for my mom today when it shut off mid call!)

This is bullshit. And I don't mean bullshit like "it's bullshit he has to pay so much", I mean the story is nothing but bullshit.
