Turntables that don't need to be grounded?
Hi,
I am planning to sell my turntables and mixer, as I don't do any mixing anymore, but I still want to listen to my records- so I'm going to get a new turntable.
My amp doesn't have a grounding post on it, like my mixer did, so if I just hook up the 2 rca ends from the turntable to the amp, I get sound but it's horrible. So, my question is, are there any turntables out there that don't need to be grounded, and can plug directly into the RCA jacks on an amp? I don't have an optical input on the amp either, just RCA.
Or is there an alternate way to ground the turntable while plugging it into the amp?
Thanks for any help-
PS. If anyone is in the toronto area and wants a pair of stanton str8-60 turntables, cases, and vestax pcv-275 for a pretty reasonable price, send me a pm!
Stanton T.80 doesn't need to be grounded. It also have a phono/line switch. Phono ==> mixer. Line ==> to everything else.
It's more than just grounding in the situation you describe. Your mixer had phono inputs which took your TT outputs. The amp has line inputs which could take a CD or computer or DVD player etc. output. Both use RCA cables but the signal is different, and that's why it sounds crappy. Use a TT with a phono/line switch like Tsukai said or get a phono adapter/preamp for your TT which basically converts the phono signal to line. The adapter might have a ground on there.
I didn't realize phono and line inputs were different, thanks for the infos!
you can also ground the turntable by loosening a screw on the amp's chassis, and hook up the ground cable, and tighten the screw to clamp on the ground cable.
if your amp does not have a phono button/switch on it (sorry, aux will not work either) then you will need a preamp (or adapter like cheetah said)
Get a stanton deck, they have line output.
That means you can hook it up to any amp without a phono pre-amp and without grounding post.
