RIAA sues XM Inc. over the new Pioneer Inno [mind-boggling inside]

Words can't describe this. They're suing XM because a portable device can store songs? It's made by goddamn Pioneer, not XM! The RIAA is so good at one-upping themselves.

I don't see how this is seen as 'stealing' by the RIAA - the Inno cannot transfer songs off of itself to a computer, and the end-user has already paid to listen to the damn song by having a subscription to XM in the first place. If the user wants to listen to a particular song that they enjoyed 5 times in a row, how is this different than hearing the song 5 times in an hour on the XM satellite broadcast itself? And why aren't they suing Sirius for the Starmate Replay, which does the exact same damn thing?

This had better not hamper sales of this thing, it's what I wanted to replace my iPod with.

BTW - how will the sales of that product be effected since the RIAA has no jurisdiction here.

RIAA = we're so fucking lazy, that we didn't bother to keep up with technology...so we're going to kick back and sue everyone who has had the foresight to change with the times.

RIAA is a stupid agency. They are suing people that never downloaded music and which they do not have a computer.

XM licences the music for broadcast, not download - so damn right they better be sued - they are breaking the terms of their license.

How is XM breaking the license? XM isn't doing anything but broadcasting the signal. It is a Pioneer product that is causing all this hubbub.

Pio had to get some sort of permission/encryption key from XM in able to make their device work.

Pio doesn't have any license obligations to the content producers.

And herein lies the problem. Why buy mp3's for your Ipod when you can store streamed music for free using this device?

Because you can listen to those purchased MP3s anywhere, whereas this, you cannot listen to it anywhere other than directly from the Inno player itself. There is no way to transfer songs off of it.

Unless you hook that device to the line in of your soundcard and manually record the stuff on your PC via software like Soundforge, That is how must DJ sets are recorded directly from these days. Anyways, XM has posted a statement regarding this here.

Wow. That's so convenient! I am gonna stop downloading music for free online RIGHT NOW, and buy this thing right away so I can enjoy the convenience of slowly ripping the streams from XM radio to my computer!
