laptop production/djing (specs advice)

Hello, I'm about to buy a laptop and it's main purpose is for producing on the road, can people please give me advise on what I need? i was looking at getting about 512mb ram, 60gig hd and a decent enough processor. I have an external usb soundcard.
My main use will be running reason with cubase also possible albeton live 5, I'm told go for a make like acer, sony, dell, toshiba.

the usb soundcard i have has 4 phono inputs and 4 outputs (2 decks left and right channels in and out if wanted) which is perfect for traktor or something but maybe not with albeton? I've not used it yet. So not sure if i need a laptop with a good soundcard built in?

any advice greatly appreciated, budget isn't huge.
thanks in advance guys

It all comes down to how much you want to spend and sort of what brand you want.
Dell is a nono, although their high end ($3000) doesnt seem so bad.
Asus is probably the most reliable and most expensive.
How much are you going to spend and do u want a graphics card?

i guess a maximum of in your currency $1000 dont need graphics just to produce/music software

i bought my laptop 2 years ago, spend about 1000 euros for my acer travelmate 240 (celeron 2.4 ghz, 786 mb ram, pcmcia echo indigo soundcard) and i still produce all my music with this one.

this is pretty minimal and lacks of power most times i produce but if you adopt a smart way of working, it works fine . at least skills and experience are more important than expensive equipment.

try to get the best cpu and ram you can effort and save money on graphic and hd (if you dont use samples often).

who please would be runnign windowns on a mac?

i spoke to a few people today who work in I.T. and they say get a PC not a Mac as you will get more power for your money, but i speak to a few producers and they say get a Mac.. why is the Mac favoured over the PC Laptops? is there really much difference? the software would be the same.

Posted by soundrush on May-22-2006 13:52:

first. when you buy a windows based laptop you'll definately get stronger hardware for your money.

also i guess that you're running on a windows pc at home, getting a different system on your notebook would mean that you've to buy your software twice (for mac and windows).

there will always be mac users who tell you that mac is best and windows users who tell you that windwos is best. actually both are computers, pretty similiar and they get the job done. it realy much depends on your personal taste, your way of working and your budget of course.

so in reality there is no performance advantage to a Mac?

Im sorry but you dont exactly know what your talking about here do you?

Many will dispute that one is better then the other but i beleive both have their potentials as other users have already said.
I have always been a windows person (calling it a PC doesnt make sense since a mac is still a personal computer)
If i had the money and was looking for a laptop i would go for a macbook but if i was going for a desktop i would go for windows based system. (I guess calling it windows doesnt realy work since it can be used on the mac now but you know what im saying)

Posted by slp3 on May-22-2006 15:14:

hello you just said i didn't know what i was talking about and yet you completely failed to answer my point about the actual advantages of one system over another in relation to music production...and if i did know everything about it i wouldn't be asking questions on a forum would I? your point that me saying wouldn't the software be the same meant i didn't know what i was talking about makes no sense, as I was asking what advantages does the hardware or operating system of a Mac over a PC give you?!? idiot.

If there is someone who DOES know what there talking about please let me know. Ta

ok i don't know what i'm talking about, but from what i've gathered...

macs are more stable than a pc?? i don't know. maybe that's how it used to be, maybe it's still like that. at this point, it probably doesn't matter which you get. macs look cooler, if you have one, you will probably be considered cooler. so if you want to be cool, get a mac. if you want to get laid, get a mac. OK!?

Posted by T-Soma on May-22-2006 15:27:

Well sorry i thaught you where saying you thaught the software used on a mac is the same as the software used on a PC. I didnt know you where talking performance wise.
Depending on your the level of your computer skills I guess you would say mac is more stable than PC.
But if you know how to look after a PC it will run perfectly.
PCs are easier to build your self and upgrade.

thats a statement many people tend to believe.
i never worked with an ibook or powerbook or how all these things are called.
but i have been working on several imac's during my education. most of the times i worked with grafic-apps like cinema 4d, quark xpress and photoshop. i didn't happen everyday but they crashed from time to time and i had to push the power button. in any case they crashed more often than my windows pc.
since windows xp the system runs quite stable imo (unless you work with cracked software).
