how to program basses better?

can anyone give me tips on synth programming really phat and unique bass sounds. It seems like this is a little weak for me, and most preset/patch banks are weak in this area too compared to pads or leads.

any ideas on how to program good basses? like what oscillators, lfo, envelopes, effects, modulations, etc? any tutorials to link to?

all help and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Basslayering! 2-3 basslines, some eq tweaking and a bit of your own imagination.

Keep trying, and dont give up, cus u will find "that" sound that u want.

Remember that there are no shortcuts to a unique sound.

You could for example try using Frequency Modulation. Those FM basses are teh shite and you can create very unique sounds with it
Maybe you could also try some pitchbending/glide, that can also produce nice results.

funny you should mention this cybernetica, as although i've been digging deep into the z3ta last month and still surfing the awesome matrix it has, i just got the sytrus fm softsynth and printed out the manual seems like it's fm time!

thanks substorm i think i'll layer and eq some of the additive and hard synth sounds i've made. what do you mean there are no shortcuts?? i am so disappointed as work is not my strong point

depending on what sound your going for, i think if i were trying to get a fuller sound in reason would it a good idea to sometimes create another of the same patch and put it down or up an octave?

im not talking about bass im talking about leads etc! although same would apply! as i find im not completing my patches properly by not making the sound fuller as im not sure it will leave me space in the mix?
