Thailand
Going there 2nd week in june for 3 weeks. Looking at going down to the islands...Ko Samui, Ko Phan Ngan etc.
Anyone got any recommendations?
Be sure and check out the goldfish, the darts, the big frog, the fat texta, the razor blades, the unopened bottle of coke that becomes open gets emptied then refilled without spilling a drop and the 140 foot ball of string.

yeah the darts popping the balloons and the razors are pretty
Skip KoSumui (the island is overated, your time is much better spent on islands like Krabi) go straight to KoPanghan, and make sure you book accomodation a week in advance before the Full Moon Party on the island or you will be ages away from Sunrise beach.

i think i meant Ko Tao or something, forgotten which is which
The bikes are only $5US a day which are good, but i think they void your Travel Insurance because so many peopel crash on them, met an Australian guy who got really fucked up on one of those bikes, but if you're careful and don't ride them when you're drunk and stoned like so many backpackers do i'm sure you'll be fine
US$5? you got ripped off
my wife always seems to find chinese descent thais who still speak her dialect, so we always seem to get stuff very cheap without trying, and at krabi the prices are much lower than other tourist areas to start with.
Bikes are the best way to get around, though they don't tend to have working speedo's which actually makes things much more relaxing.Go whatever speed you want, just keep left and people go around you.
I got booked once for not wearing a helmet though. They take you keyes and won't give them back until you get a receipt for paying the fine (was about $7) from the police station. Then they let you ride off again without a helmet.
hit phuket (I prefer Phuket over the other places, it has the best beaches), do the phi phi island tour, you won't regret it!
Do visit kho samui though.....you're there, you may as well and nothing is ever too far away when you're in Thailand.

Thanks for the advice guys. Flying out in 2 weeks...can't wait!!!
Looks like I'm going the half-moon party in Ko Phan Ngan now...we just miss the full moon party. Can anyone recommend any decent beach huts to book in advance?? Apparently accomodation is fully booked everywhere for this??
i think i need to put together a travel itinerary too.
just reading up on the full moon party, sounds like lots of fun!
make sure you attend the full moon party
I'm going to Thailand for my 21st Birthday around the end of June.. can't wait for the Full moon party!
u have to watch the thai-girl show (tiger show) if ur going to phucket.. i found it sick when i went there..
^^ the shows are quite obscene, and somewhat eye opening, i have no ide ahow people get off on them

There's a shitload of pirated CDs and DVDs over there, on Kao San road you can get every single GU in the series for a few dollars each, so dodgy
if you're going to spend any time in bangkok, make sure you visit MBK shopping centre if you are into games, cd's dvd's etc. Actually you can buy pretty much anything there.
and also get a scooter taxi, 100baht to get clear across bangkok, and those guys are mad riders. They don't always appreciate that us fat guys don't fit between those two buses, got a few bruised knees from that but it is great fun
Going to be at the FULL MOON PARTY DANCE FESTIVAL in 12 July!
Anyone else going?!

How much cash do you reckon i'll need for the trip?? The lonely planet says its very cheap...think its more expensive in places like Ko Samui & Phuket?? I was thinking of taking $1500 for 3 weeks...reckon that should be more than enough???
Fly out on sunday now, can't wait!!!

$1200...Melbourne straight to Bangkok with Thai airways. Thought it was pretty good considering there's no stops in KL etc. You booked up yet?

$1500 should be plenty, but depends on what stuff you want to do. A diving course is nice to do there, but will run to about $250-300. drinking wine is hellish expensive though beer and local whisky can be very cheap. (note, there's a good reason that whisky is cheap, feels like paint stripper in your stomach).
hiring scooters are cheap, you can spend a bit more on cruisers or sports bikes, (why you'd want a cbr400 on those roads with dogs wandering everywhere and crazy traffix is beyond me).
your budget will cover good eating, drinking, a few trips and stuff comfortably if you don't do anything silly.

The lonely planet says its about $10-20 for a twin room in a decent hostel (depending on time of year)...apparently the food is cheap as fook too?
from memory this is the off season, so should be reasonably cheap. I think this is the time of year when it's not really safe to swim on the beaches off phuket, though on the islands it's ok.
hostels will be in that $20 price range, though you can go up to as much as you want to spend.
