Lots

Traktor DJ Studios is one of the best.

traktor or atomix virtual DJ, and ableton if you want to do more than just mix

Posted by mnemonic. on May-27-2006 03:34:

the problem with all these programs is you gotta be super quick on a mouse, as its your only controller, it gets hard keepng track jumping from one side of the screen to the other, whereas with "real" DJ-ing, both hands are free and you can be much more efficient, whereas the progs are like DJing one handed

or you could just try to remember the 100+ preset keys on the keyboard

So true. One of the main reasons I was fed up and finally just bought my gear was I was tired of only really being able to mess with one eq at the same time on virtual dj.

Yeah, and the solution is called MIDI-controllers. Hercules's is cheap and very well worth it, as far as I'm told.

Pretty much f*cked up your critique didn't I? ;P

w? a huge variety of MIDI controllers! from Hercules to plain faders or rotary knobs

I'm using Traktor 2.5 with a Behringer BCF2000 controller. Not exactly ideal, but it gets the job done... for now

Posted by tvmann on May-27-2006 17:25:

I use Traktor 2.53 with an M-Audio X-Session midi controller. The X-Session has 16 knobs, a cross-fader, 10 button switches and can be configured like a 2 channel mixer with 3 band EQ, kill switches on each band, and bandpass filters.

I still use a mouse but I'm much less dependent on it since I have those EQ knobs on the midi box "mixer". Overall it's very similar to conventional DJing with 2 CD decks and a mixer.

awesome... how much was the x-session? *lazy*

They're now $107 US at Florida Music. Come down in price since I got mine there. Only weighs about 2 or 3 lb and fits in the notebook bag. That store has lots of other Midi boxes, or "control surfaces" in their index.

Not as sturdy built as a mixer but good enough and I like the small size & weight. Cover is heavy-ish plastic, bottom and connector panel is metal.

thats true too, i have to admit, MIDI Controllers slipped my mind at the time i posted that, after all ive seen some amazing breaks sets done with DJ Programs, some with, and others without Midi controllers...

but it was for this reason that i bought my gear as well, instead of just MIDI controllers, its just more "authentic" i suppose, i guess thats the best word to use

Now maybe I should get a controller and try it out on traktor before spending thousands of dollars on new gears. Always didnt bother to do traktor with keyboard/mouse, really difficult.

Is the M-Audio X-Session a good one to invest and go along with traktor?

Posted by tvmann on May-28-2006 16:57:

The X-Session is a very good value and works well as a controller for 2 channel DJing. But it is really an adaptation of a previous product called the UC-16 and sort of general-purpose and not specially designed just for DJing, although it does have the cross-fader, which some people don't use as they prefer to use the channel level controls.

There are more expensive units that are designed explicitly for DJing such as the FaderFox. A new one that looks good is the Feena FMDJ9303, more expensive, bigger & heavier:
http://www.feena-electronics.com/

There's another good 2 channel box called the Kontrol-DJ, more expensive.

Only problem is that the 2-channel versions of Traktor (2.53 & 2.6) are no longer officially available, they are selling Traktor 3 which can use up to 4 virtual decks, and most Midi controllers such as the X-Session, FaderFox, Feena, & Kontrol-DJ have enough knobs for only 2 decks. You can still use them with Traktor 3 and just use 2 decks, or alternately use 3 or 4 decks but use less knobs and switches per deck. There are 4 channel Midi controllers being designed but they will be expensive.

Personally I'm sticking with the X-Session as I like it's small size & weight and it's still an excellent choice. If you decide computer DJing is not for you then it hasn't cost a lot and you can still use the X-Session for other music software (production) or just sell it. If I was starting again the FaderFox or Feena would be alternatives. I'm waiting for a really good 4 channel controller that is designed for Traktor 3.

Thanks man tvmann, gonna check those out! (That feena looks good)

Are there people who actually uses mixers like the djm for traktor?

Posted by superglo on May-30-2006 13:16:

I know a couple of club dj's who have converted from vinyl to traktor setups.

A lot of people still use a regular mixer with Traktor but it looks like more are starting to use Midi controllers.

There is a very small amount of latency or delay with a Midi controller that some people say they can feel. so they prefer a real mixer. Also only a few Midi boxes (FaderFox, Feena, Kontrol-DJ) are specially designed for DJing and have a good layout of the controls.
