well i am by NO means an expert, but ive researched a bit(i need one too) and basically all i know is that IBM is supposedly the best. or so my friend says, and he knows a shitload more about computers than i do...otherwise, i am interested to hear what everyone else says. late/

5400 RPM is no good..

By todays standards its far from beign a good HDD. Considering your system a K6 AMD it'll be a ATA66 supporting only motherboard. If you not considering to upgrade the system its a match made in haven.
But if you gonna upgrade go and by a HDD (preferably a SEAGATE quitests shites i've seen. Good price range as well) try a 7200 RPM one which will work wonders with a onboard ATA100 controller (not IDE 0)
Note: forget about that IBM shit. Tried and had to replace 3 times the MFs.

IBMs are definetly a good choice. I would consider them or Maxtor. If I were you I would go for a 60 GB drive. They are at the sweetspot right now. If you look online at a place like newegg.com you can get 1 for about $100...

5400 is way too slow

Posted by Tranex02 on Feb-10-2002 03:10:

the HD that origionally came with my computer was
'GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE47'
I know that probably sucks...but i'm just telling you cuz you said that a 'ATA66' would be better....
I don't want anything "TOP OF THE LINE"...but something that is pretty good...
the most i'm willing to spend is around $100....a bit more is also ok...

Posted by Raptor on Feb-10-2002 03:41:

all i can say like lMIlk said 5400 is too slow get a 7200 it runs faster... but as for size the bigger the size the slower it runs. so if you get a 60gb hd the best thing to do is split it so it runs faster and more efficent. i would prefer a IBM hd they work good i use 1 at home. but if you're willing to spend money then get a SCSI hard drive those are probably the best but you do you need a SCSI drive to run it and thats just a pain in the ass buying that too... so go with the IBM

if u ask me, u need a bigger hard drive than 30 gigs....i have about 25 gigs filled up on mine with trance and "related" things...

also, buy a 133. 7200rpm HD at least 40 gigs, and yes western digital is a good brand (that's what i got)....i want to get an 80 gig next

Thanks for the info you guys....I'll take it into deep consideration...

More info is always welcome....

Didn't anyone take my comments into cosidiration?
Well I own 5 HDDs in my system! all of them 30Gig 7200 drives. And build PCs from the scratch and sell them as well from time to time. So i know quite alot about PCs. Tranex owns a K6 system. IBM won't do any good cause they have backwards compability issues. How i know? because i fucked up 3 of'em in a 33mbs IDE 0 channel. He won't have an ATA100 controller on his system as it is. IBMs are prone to fuckup on slower systems.....

As i said; if you gonna keep that PC you've got, buy that 5200 drive and you'll be happy with that. Buying a 7200 (which will be an ATA100) won't make any difference. SEAGATE is the way to go also QUANTUM is not too bad. I punish them every day to da MAX and they're very happy with that!!. WD's and IBM, i had more than one bad experience with them....

Tranceilvania...
Thanks alot for the info....do you know any websites the i can buy from....?

Thanks again guys.....

Posted by Tranceilvania on Feb-10-2002 10:15:

Why you buying it from the web maan? Go to your local PC joint and grab one... Save the hassle for Garrantie/warranty issues.

Posted by Drifter on Feb-10-2002 15:49:

yeah i agree, go down to the local shop instead, its much better with warranties and all, yeah 7200rpm is prob a good way to esp with seagate, western digital or quantum (thats what i got 40gig) actually the fastest speed hdd you can get is the cheetah X15 which goes at 15000rpm but if your goin to get anything at or above 10000rpm its best to get a housing fan to cool the bastards or you'll have a meltdown...remember at higher speeds the hard drive goes, the noiser and hotter it gets. Also the motherboard may not be able to support a housing fan
Prob be better if you don't go for too much large size as your processor can't handle it well and be slow as well to start up...in which case that can be fixed with a drive partion
Oh yeah if u have a shitty video card it will just be a bottleneck in the cpu so it doesn't matter if u have a gd processor or a fast hard drive because down the line it will still run like a bitch

Posted by dig2k on Feb-10-2002 16:55:

I rekon u shud go 4 a IBM Deskstar 60GXP 61.5GB hd, u can get a 30gb 1 in the 75gxp range but its only a little bit cheaper so its not worth the downgrade... I think its 7200rpm and i no its got good access times etc.

Also i wudnt worry about the rpm if ur just using it 2 store mp3 files or for non-intensive applications... it won't make much difference 2 those...

ugh...im one ethernet and i have a 10 gig, which when it was empty was still only like 6GB free...damn windows. i think i really need another drive - juggling several hundred MB free sucks. then again spending money on stuff that doesnt involve partying would make my savings go bye bye very quickly...late/

Posted by Tranex02 on Feb-10-2002 21:12:

I also have a 10gig.....was serving me well ....
before i got cable
plus....i gets to be a hassel trying to record CD-r's all the time..
