"Classics of "our time?"

So I was in the forums of ASOT 250 while listening to it the other day and during the classics hour armin played casamera (sp?). There were a few people who thought that this song should not be consiered a classic yet (i was one of them). So I was just wondering what you guys would consider in 10 years the classics of the past couple of years?

(stick to trance and prog trance)

good thread, I had the same idea, strange..

I think whiteroom - whiteroom can be considered as a classic, or not?

and as the rush comes, everyone should agree on this.

Love Theme Dusk ?

Posted by miamitranceman on May-29-2006 22:27:

G&D - Arcadia ...maybe?

Posted by RebeL9 on May-29-2006 22:28:

neither whiteroom or castamera can be classified as a classic IMO. they are too generic both of them.

a classic is a tune which IMO should sound more or less groundbreaking. of course its highly subjective but still a majority of people cant deny that Age of Love - Age of love is a classic today. Simply because it took trance to the next level.

a classic of today? i wouldn't know. there are simply not many tunes which are groundbreaking enough to be remembered in 10 years.

tilt - the world doesn't know, who would agree on this?

Castamara i agree is nowhere near classic status. The White Room there is room for debate imo. Dunno how you can say it was "generic". I suggest you take a look at the meaning of the word before you band it about to a track as good as The White Room was

Posted by ivanbee on May-29-2006 23:09:

james holden - horizons

I know what it means. and it was highly generic. taking an old BT song and reversing the vocals is not groundbreaking.

James Holden - A Break In The Clouds
Jonas Steur - Silent Waves

that's all that pops into my mind immediately.

Posted by Reactic on May-29-2006 23:19:

released in 2003: holden & thompson - nothing (93 returning mix) - this one is already now a classic.

Yes I would agree on this one.

I know this is a bit premature since they were released this year and last year, but that is the question at hand so I suggest:

Allure - The Love We Lost
Airbase - Escape
L.S.G. - Netherworld 2005 (Oliver Prime Remix)
Perasma - Swing 2 Harmony

I could agree on these three. And also add in Helsinki Scorchin', whether or not you lot think it's overplayed. It'll easily be in contention for ch00n of 2006, and I say rightfully so. There's a reason why it's "overplayed".

I hear Swing 2 Harmony two months ago. I know it sounds like I've been living under a rock, but the first time I heard it I was like WOW! This is why I dismiss comments like "overplayed". Just like you said there's a reason why they're overplayed. Although that philosophy is limited to a certain extent.

Yeah, I can admit it's a bit of a faulty philosophy, but tracks that are considered classics by most are as reliable as the dj mag poll for basing an actual dj's skill.

I'm sorry but that to me is rubbish, surely a classic is defined not only by that but mainly by how good it was! I'm sure there were groundbreaking tracks that were terrible yet they wouldn't be considered classics. There are many awesome tracks which probably aren't that groundbreaking yet are definate classics.

Anyway, with regards to modern day classics I'll go for

Primer - Everlast
Jonas Steur - Second Turn
Alex M.O.R.P.H. Presents Everest - Oree

Plus there must be loads more but they're just off the top of my head...

There are many many from 2002 sorta time i don't know if you including them of classics 'of our time'

I dont exactly know what you think things should sound like to not be "generic". But there was nothing the sounded like The White Room at that time wheather you like or not or how much you think it sounded like an older tune. Cant recall many people saying what you have when it first bust onto the scene

As for a modern "classic" prob:
Hammer & Bennett - Language. Think that will still get played in a few years time.

^ some of them arent even trance....

but where is Out of the blue for classic??

Posted by isoterra on May-30-2006 01:33:

thinking objectively, marcel woods - advanced & dogzilla - without you. purely for the fact that not many big tunes can boast getting played out frequently for over a year and still send places crazy. both stood out too, were different to most of the stuff in the scene

for me personally, i regard alot of stuff from 03/04 as classics because i was only just getting into clubbing around that time. i'd been into the music for 5/6 years prior but clubbing kinda brought in a second wave... in 10 years time it'll be the clubbing memories i'll look back on and those tunes will be the ones i'll remember..:

hiver & hammer - five million miles (different gear mix)
darren tate & jono grant - nocturnal creatures
kasuma - dreaming
koris vs djule - sense of time
atn - miss a day
allure - the loves we lost
airbiscuit - lately
tranquility base - surrender

loads more i'm sure

never did like castamara much, but it's nice to see the odd 'future classic' (which i guess it is.. in the eyes of asot fans) thrown in with the oldies. gives the impression the scene isn't completely stuck in the past

Veracocha - Carte Blanche
