the juggling act: which to upgrade first?

in a perfect world, id be able to grab new stuff at the same time... but fate has other plans for me, seeing how i dont have the cash for all, but can manage to upgrade one at a time.

current decks are numark tt-100s, mixer is a dm-1001x.... both are teh suck. carts are ortofon pros? (the silver ones). they're alright... just getting a little old.

im really hopin to find a good deal on a used pair of techs, or just bite the bullet and keep saving for new ones. as for mixer i was thinkin along the lines of either the denon dn-x500, or possibly the NUO 3. as for carts, i was hopin to get either ortofon elektros, or nightclubs....

any thoughts, or reasoning?

edit: its the 3001x, not 1001x.... not that it makes much of a diff...

You can get complete sweet deals on some technics m3ds...almost always under 300 for 1 deck (usd).


But personally I would go with with CDJs.....I went to 2 shows in 2 days (tiesto@blue in dallas and gabriel and dresden@sky in austin) and there wasn't ONE vinyl turntable there (they were using CDJ-1000s)....all 3 of them, tiesto was using 2 CDJ-1000 mk2 and 1 cdj-1000 mk1 where as GND were using 2 CDJ-1000mk2s and an iMAC....

I own a pair of cdj-1000s....can't go wrong there if you're serious about DJing.

ive been djing for quite some time now... over 4 years. i have put my starter gear through quite a lot of use, but havent upgraded because my money has been going to other priorities over the years.

its not a matter of going w/ cds or vinyl, cuz im with vinyl, period. (although it is saddening that even the big names, who you think would easily be able to support a vinyl addiction are going CDJ)...

lets crunch some numbers, shall we?

2 x Technics M3Ds off ebay - approx $600 for the pair
1 x Ecler Nuo 3 - MAP - $499.95
1 x dn-x500 - MAP - $399.99 (gotta call agiprodj for actual quotes on the mixers)
2 x Ortofon Concorde Elektro - approx. $240 for the pair
2 x Ortofon Concorde Nightclub - approx. $360 for the pair.

all of these would be considerable chuncks of change to drop, and considering the money i have, i can only do one at a time...

as it has been said "your only as strong as your weakest link"... im just trying to decide that for my gear...

at least you have belt drives...

i would upgrade the item you most unhappy with first.

if you hate your mixer more than your turntables, then upgrade the mixer first. if not, maybe 1 TT, 2nd TT, needles, then mixer. that's how i did it.

decks first with one pair of good needles. then the mixer. then whatever else. that's how i'd do it.

But were G&D any good? They're coming to dublin on sunday and i'm going to go see them with a few mates.

Robbie Rivera on Sat. then G&D on sunday. Should be a fun weekend!


PS. I'd go for CDJ's myself..

Exactly what I did, upgraded my decks. Then needles. Then one of my needles borked, now my mixer's got to wait a little longer.
