Didn't really no what to expect, as i had never heard him live or any of his sets.... but he was very impressive. I caught the tail end of Nevio, as i spent most of the beginning of the night mingling out on the patio.

Billy brought a circuit/tribal style, with a nice balance of classic re-works, and new material/remixes. He pitched things up later in his set, bouncing along at 130bpm of chuggy tribal.... and by the end of the night, he had brought out his catalog of clasics, dating back to as early as '98. He did a lot of on the spot re-works, looping samples, and layering various accapellas (i have never seen a dj with a more organized collection of tunes.)

Nice guy, and at one point saw how crazy i was going to one of his tracks, he grabbed a napkin, wrote down the track name, and said 'he you go - enjoy'.

Once again, Carey brings a relatively unknown (to Toronto) - who rocked the house.

Candygirl, and Housebeats (?) - Joe and Yvonne were there.... as well as Fairy Godfather, and Jungle Fever (great name - lol)

Which means, there are only five members of the 6'4'6 crew remaining.

pretty crazy...will prolly be there next for Morales.

Thanks Jeff...nice to know we made such a lasting impression on your night!

6-4-6 Also includes Jungle Fever and of course, the fairy godfather!

As for the night, to stay positive, let's just say it was my least fav to date. Nevio was so amazing last week, and he just did not bring it with week at all. Would not even have known it was the same guy, except for a few tracks, like "He is".

Billy Carroll was just not my cup of tea. It was so repetitive and bangy...yuk! I actually left at 6 because my head was pounding for the same old base line.

The crowd was not the usual Sonic crowd. I go to Sonic every week to get away from the "village" attitide, not to have it follow me to the great clubs in the city.

Sonic has the most amazing people running it, and the most amazing group of regulars. It's a family, everyone talks to each other, no drama, no bullshit. This week was not like that, if you talked to someone you did not know, they looked you up and down and walked away.

Let the gay boys come and party, but check the bullshit at the door..please! I heard some of them talking about the "homophobic" bouncers...boys...with over two years experience at "270" beleive me, these bouncers are the most progresive in the city!

The crowd really filled in after Fashion Cares was nearing it's close...by the looks of what showed up, I would say that fashion doesn't really care all that much.

I can't wait to get my friends back this weekend at DJ Vibe...and my advice to Carey...let Billy Carroll play at Fly as he has done in the past!!!

unknown to the str8 scene. Billy always rocks out the leather ball and circuit events when he spins

Wow, that sounds really interesting. Did he have a lot of special equipment, or was it all done on decks? I want to see more turntablism and less laptop stuff.

all done on CD-J's to the best of my knowledge (i didnt see anything different set up in the booth).

he had cd's that were strictly accapella's in which he would take from the previous song played, and layer it into the following track.... it was pretty cool to watch how effortless it was for him to pull off!

Thats neat. You can hear when other DJs do it, and with trance it doesn't sound good most of the time.

If you can do it with CD-Js, then all the better!

Billy Carroll did not disappoint. I thought that he spun the dirtiest set at Sonic so far and I had an outstanding night from start to end.

I have a simple philosophy when it comes to clubbing and that's trust the DJ, open your soul to him & enjoy the trip he sends you on. This Saturday was no different and Billy's journey was more than memorable. His set was all the things I love in house music -- dark, deep & dirty. If I had to compare, I would say his sound was a housier version of Behrouz. Needless to say, I danced my @ss off! (lost 5 lbs!)

To date, each night at Sonic has provided a different memory all incredible in their own way.

Q: Floorwhore, is a double-header required this w/e in order to maintain our 1000 batting average or will one of the two events suffice? (I don't think my body can take a 10 lb. drop!)

Hey Joe...good review...not my thoughts at all...but we have to respect each others opinions...

As for this weekend...I personally think we should only need one night out of two to keep our record intact....to me it's about how many weeks in a row...not how many nights...

There, that's my opinion...bring on the judge in 5...4..3..2..1...

Cue Floorwhore....

Daniel

to keep your batting average at 1000, you need both nights under your belt..... but daniel is right - show up for one, and you still have the week streak intact (which is still bloody impressive imo)

Well Jeff, it's thats the ruling...I think we are probably all out...or was everyone at the Eden party two weeks ago...

i secretly went, dressed up as ru-paul

i cant even count how many comments i received on my freshly waxed legs......

Posted by fairy godfather on Jun-05-2006 23:31:

Ru-Paul my ass!!!

you make a good point daniel.

all those who show up on either friday OR saturday, their streaks will remain intact. it is only fair :P

Posted by fairy godfather on Jun-05-2006 23:44:

That's better!

Hard to imagine a fag asking for an appeal for NOT going to the Sonic gay night...

Posted by Jungle Fever on Jun-06-2006 01:17:

A very different night. By 7 am I would say the music got really good WOW. As for before that I don't think I spent more than 10 minutes on the dance floor at a time, too cyclic. It's too bad that the hard beats were not heard by all. This would be a very different review had I not hung in there until the end.

Posted by fairy godfather on Jun-06-2006 01:23:

Are you picking on me Chris, because I did not stay until the end? LOL....

Posted by Jungle Fever on Jun-06-2006 01:26:

Not at all. If I would have left at 6 or 7, then I would have to say that it was not the best sounds and I would have a very different opinion of this DJ.

Posted by fairy godfather on Jun-06-2006 01:30:

No, I think you are picking on me...

Hey babe...what do you want for dinner?

Posted by CandyGirl on Jun-06-2006 20:23:

As far as first impressions go, I thought Billy Carroll kicked some serious ass on Saturday night... including mine!

Billy's set was definitely not for the meek or mild... or for someone looking for a happy-go-lucky night either. His set was a True Triple "D", Deep, Dark & Dirty, the sort of music that finds it's way deep into your mind & soul and makes you dance so hard you sometimes have to stop & wonder how you haven't dropped from a heart attack yet! Yes, the baselines were pounding all night long, but these were only an underlay to many other highly structured layers(not to mention hypnotizing) being delivered at the same time. A really mature and technically sound set delivered by an obvious veteran in the afterhours scene.

I completely loved the vibe of this party... a great mix of like-minded music lovers all out to enjoy the intense & intelligent sounds of a really talented DJ. For me, these low key/low fuss parties are usually the best and this one was no exception!

Walking into this party, I didn't know who Billy Carroll was... walking out, it's a name I won't soon forget.
