SET INFORMATION
============
Enjoy this high quality set mixed live by |3|_ @ Z 3|) (Alias: Blazed) on June 04, 2006.

All tracks are high quality uncompressed WAV remixed in Virtual DJ 3.0 and then converted into mp3 format at 240kpbs Variable Bitrate. Finally, I return home after a very exhausting two week business trip. I decided to spend my sunday relaxing for the latter part of the day but I had to kick off the morning with a spontaneous set. This mix starts on a nice melodic note which quickly adapts into very dark hard hitting basslines to keep you wide awake. The listener gets a soothing break just over half way through and then presses on eventually finishing with some blissful melodic rythems. Without a doubt this mix brings me back to my roots of that sound I have been looking for for quite some time. Any die hard progressive fans will love this set.

This is my 7th official live remix with full track listings. Expect Very Deep, Dark, Melodic Progressive House & Trance

Please post feedback if you download this set. Constructive criticism is always appreciated!

Cheers! 8^)

Thanks for your continued support Ward -- Knew you would enjoy this one alot. Surprisingly this was a very spontaenous set but it took a helluva long time trying to find these tracks on Beatports endless music archive. I'll continue doing my best to make quality sets for any listeners out there who love that progressive sound as well as continually expanding and experiementing with new styles. I'm using ALOT more house in my sets these days.

Sounds distored around the 45min mark...

Posted by vakus on Jun-15-2006 09:18:

1. Liked this track with the fake beats at the beginning, good mood setter, good mellow synths.
2. In this transition the eq'ing was great and also the beat matching, but i dont think the phrases were matched appropiately, not sure, but i think the second song was 8 beats ahead of the phrase of the first song, it should've come in completely at around 7:36 I think or along that phrase line. Really like these synths. Good break and good feel on the track. awesome track.
3. Great transition. works really well. awesome track. just loved how that hi kicks in at 13:08. very soothing vocals and uplifting synth. love this track by casa flava.
4. another very good transition here. u did a really good job here with mids. nice pick up on the flow. very good break in the track. very nice at around the 20 min mark. not crazy about those synths but they work very well in the song with the light vocal.
5. bass dropped in a bit too loud, but good transition. excellent tribal beat at around 26:30. not crazy bout this track though.
6. good transition here also. these past couple of tunes should work very well in clubs. very nice flow so far. this is a killer track, lol.
7. awesome transition here into this electro synth. like it very much. not crazy bout this break though, especially the vocals. but it keeps the flow the going very well after the last track.
8. didnt drop the mid enough at the beginning, but only for a few beats. there was a minor issue with phrase matching also, but it came out great. its a pretty hard beat n flow u got going, very nice.
9. good step into the dark side, very nice track. i think the volumes r a bit hi, its kinda distorting a bit at the peaks.
10. again a bit of an issue with the phrase matching, i think this transition had more potential than what it came out to, go a bit boringwaiting for that bang in this excellent track. still was a good transtion in beat matching and excellent eq'ing. excellent flow so far in the set. good uplifting track after a while of dark tech tunes.
11. a bit of hi volume in this next track, still a good transition. nice chill melodic track, very good.
12. good eqing and beatmatching but i think the phrases were a bit off. very good track, great at around the 66th min. nice vocals.
13. kinda weird transition here, but excellent eqing and beat matching. not my fav track, kinda boring.
14. i think phrases were a bit off again, eqing and beatmatching were good. good track to end the set with.

I think the set was very good. The flow was very smooth throughout the whole set whether u used hard or progressive tracks. Eqing and beatmatching were excellent (except in track 9, it was a bit too high the volume), but i got confused with some of the math in the transitions. Phrases were a bit off and thats the reason some of the transitions could've been tighter. track selection was ok, imo, some tracks didn't do it for me and bored me a bit; but some others were very good, (i guess its kinda of a style thing and just tracks that would not go with mine, but still good beats). I think the best part about the set is that it kept pretty much unity in style and in flow throughout 80 minutes and that is not easy to do. I think it is a very good set and if u have interest in doing them frequently pm me...

Great job and let me know when the next one comes up.

Without a doubt, I love starting off on a nice mellow note. Benz & MD ROCK!

Yes I believe you are right about the phrasematching here. Most of the time I break the rules as far as phrasematching because I like to loop in and loop out of songs when I feel it is at the right time. My way of "melting" tracks together without doing such quick transitions( ie Paul Oakenfold is famous for his quick cuts). Something I definately should work on though.

You mean at 13:02? At 12:47 I should have dropped the bass in louder here though. I'm loving Casa Flava these days, absolutely amazing productions.

No questions asked, Andre Absolut is my favourite artist at the moment. I'm in love with just about all of his productions and remixes. I love this track.

5. bass dropped in a bit too loud, but good transition. excellent tribal beat at around 26:30. not crazy bout this track though.

Spot on, this track is one of those floor stompers and I forgot how heavy this bassline was before dropping it. Likewise this track can get quite boring very fast but I thought it was perfect change to get the darker part of the set kickin'

quote:
6. good transition here also. these past couple of tunes should work very well in clubs. very nice flow so far. this is a killer track, lol.

LoL for sure, this is another huge club track that would get your ass shaking. Huge bassline, and the vocals work great. I made sure not to keep it running too long though as it can get quite repetitive.

quote:
7. awesome transition here into this electro synth. like it very much. not crazy bout this break though, especially the vocals. but it keeps the flow the going very well after the last track.

My thoughts exactly. Dub version would have been perfect. "Drums.... The rythem of the underground" is the most I wanted to hear outta him. Main thing I like about this track is the huge bassline that kicks at 35:44. This track worked perfect as far as keeping the flow consistant and the phrasematching was spot on here so I had to throw it in.

quote:
8. didnt drop the mid enough at the beginning, but only for a few beats. there was a minor issue with phrase matching also, but it came out great. its a pretty hard beat n flow u got going, very nice.

This is the where I messed up in the set. I originally had another track queued up before mixing but decided to change my mind near the outro of track 7. I was fumbling around panicing to get the next track in. 37:42 is when I should have began transitioning. If you listen closely I brought this track in a couple beats early and the beatmatching could have been alot better here. The phrasematching is off as well. My major gripe about the set is this transition.. eerr!

quote:
9. good step into the dark side, very nice track. i think the volumes r a bit hi, its kinda distorting a bit at the peaks.

As with this one I was panicing to get the next track queued up. I didn't hear any clipping issues here but this track has that huge thumping bassline and I think I did crank it up too much here.

quote:
10. again a bit of an issue with the phrase matching, i think this transition had more potential than what it came out to, go a bit boring waiting for that bang in this excellent track. still was a good transtion in beat matching and excellent eq'ing. excellent flow so far in the set. good uplifting track after a while of dark tech tunes.

I must disagree with you here. I thought this was one of my best transitions. Phrasematching seemed fine to me... I transitioned the basslines at 50:45. I could hardly notice the difference in transitions here as I thought both basslines were almost identical.

quote:
11. a bit of hi volume in this next track, still a good transition. nice chill melodic track, very good.

Volumes seemed just fine to me except for when I dropped the bassline at 58:03. Should have been louder IMO. Still worked for me because I wanted to progress this track and I did just that where it climaxed at 60:45. I love this track. Such a nice melody to compliment that bassline.

quote:
12. good eqing and beatmatching but i think the phrases were a bit off. very good track, great at around the 66th min. nice vocals.

Yup, right on this one. Phrasematching is off in this track. A few beats behind. I thought this track went perfect with the previous one.

quote:
13. kinda weird transition here, but excellent eqing and beat matching. not my fav track, kinda boring.

Nothing too special here but that was the plan as this track was more or less my outro to let the listener know the set is winding down. It was my break track :P

quote:
14. I think phrases were a bit off again, eqing and beatmatching were good. good track to end the set with.

I'm still in love with this track. That piano riff and synths I just can't get enough of. At this point I had planned on mixing for a full two hours but since I brought this track in I thought it would be a perfect end of the night/set track.

Vakus,

I can not thank you enough for taking the time to write a very extensive review on my latest set. Your feedback will definately help me in the future as it is clear I need to work on my phrasematching even though I do like breaking rules -- Your statement about being confused with some of the math in the transitions is completely agreeable. This is because this set was entirely spontaneous. My next mix will be pure progressive trance and it will be planned ahead of time so I will do my best to make sure the phrasematching is spot on. Likewise you were bored with some of the tracks in the set but somtimes you must sacrifice a couple of songs to keep that pace a flowin' and thats what I thought I accomplished here. My goal was to have a very dark set but to have a full 80 mins of pounding beats would have been tedious which is why the first and last 25mins or so is melodic. The easiest way to describe this set is to relate to one of my emotional days where I'm really happy.. then really frustrated and angry... and then I rectify the situation and become enlightened by the end. Now I'm always interested in making a set frequently but time is always working against me. If you would like to broadcast any of my mixes that would be too cool but I think the most I would ever be able to do is one mix per month. These past two days I took work off which is why I've been around. Thanks once again for your awesome feedback! 8^)

8/10
Short Version: Great mixing, ok music. To understand why keep reading.

Long Version: Im a big supporter of having a well thought out intro track and because of that I would have gone with the original version of Sound 84 because the entrance is just plain beautiful, but after listening to the first transition I could see why you didnt go for it. Unlike the original, which has a soft and weaker bass, the remix has a heavier bass and flows very well into your second track which also shares that same bass heaviness as the first track. Overall that first mix around the 7 min. mark is mint so ultimately theres nothing to complain about since it fit perfectly. The second and third transitions at the 11:30 and 18 minute marks are also well mixed. It wasnt until the 4th mix at around the 25th minute that you start to pick things up a notch and hence benefit your overall flow. Everything after that screams technical perfection until the 70th minute. Your volume levels/gains are too low for the remainder of the set.

Now lets move on to your track selection shall we? It is evident that you have corrected everything from your previous set except for the one aspect that makes up the meat of a mixset. In this case, that aspect was the music. To keep a long story short, lets just say I had a hard time keeping myself glued to your set. Nothing really grabbed me as phenomenal and while at first I thought it was a matter of taste, I later realized that was not the case since I love progressive house. If this was a hardcore set, then thats a different story. All in all, with the exception of your great mixing and track 1, I cannot help but give this set an 8/10.

Posted by MoN-SooN on Jun-18-2006 15:39:

Got a few listens, so I write something here. Unfortunately I didn't have time to totally focus on mixing/transitions.
At first I was sceptic about the content, since I'm not a fan of dark sounds and I mainly listen to trance to cheer myself up. Enough to say that I didn't know any track. And until 25 minute I was suprised how much I was loving the set. Then came this weird part in tribal track and irritated me a bit. Next tracks were also too dark for me and not at all melodic. Everything changed at 51 minute. My fav track here. Last 20 minutes were also entertaining. I must say that the whole concept is great and the mix is a must-hear to any fan of darker sounds. The mixing is top notch, nice blending caused my inability to distinguish track numbers One thing to complain is, what vakus already said, phrase matching. The most major example is in 38:35 IMO. That is not a big deal though... especially that you said the mix was spontaneous.
To sum things up:
Content/Tracklisting: 7/10 (very personal)
Mixing: 9/10 (very objective)

Can't wait for your next, hopefully more positive, progressive set. As it will be planned, no phrasematching issues should appear

Have you had a chance to listen to this yet?

Yes indeed, my levels were lower than they should have been near the end of the set. These tracks didn't have the best sound quality on them and I think if the gain was up any higher it would have started clipping.

appreciate you taking a thorough stab at reviewing my set. Some will love the darker sounds, some won't. You said you thought it was a matter of taste but you love progressive house. This set primarily consisted of darker prog, a few tribal tracks and of course some prog trance at the beginning and end of the set. I'm interested to see what type of "progressive house" grabs your attention if you found this set flat out boring. If you have any sets you've made I'd love to hear them to get an idea of what progressive house tickles your fancy.

Huge thanks for giving this a listen. I was already assured before you listened to this set you wouldn't enjoy most of the tracks since I already know you love the melodic trance. I was hoping for more or less of a techincal review from you and thats exactly what I got -- 51mins is my favourite track on this set as well, just love that piano melody/synth. Definately succeeded technically if you couldn't tell which track was which :P -- As far as phrasematching is concerned I will have this corrected in any future sets provided its preplanned ahead of time. As far as spontaeous sets are concerned, well I'll do my best. The new progressive trance mix will have lots of melodies and synths so I'm sure you will enjoy it alot more. Thanks again for the feedback! 8^)

I've been out of town for the last week, but did get a chance to listen to it while cruising the autobahn in Germany the other day.

First off, note that any real review is going to be at least partially subjective. That being said, I really like the mix, and feel it's very technically good. It's not a collection of tracks I would normally listen to, though I really like a couple of the producers you selected from (namely Benz & MD and Alex Stealthy). This is definitely a mood set for me -- I generally listen to more melodic Masiello-type house, but in it's own way this set really appeals to me. And it's grown on me a bit with a few repeated listens.

A couple of notes:

01) Benz & MD - Sound 84 (Subsky Remix)--->
02) Pig & Dan - Panama (Original Mix)

I REALLY like the Benz & MD track. Very quality buildup that gets the set off on the right foot. The first seven minutes flew by because I liked the track so much, and it came as a bit of a surprise when Panama's baseline came in. Technically a very good mix; somewhat different style with the second track, but within an acceptable range. By the time the track breaks for the first time I'm really digging it, though I do think it broke from the mood of the first track a little bit, which may have been intentional? I think it's the blippy electronic distortion element that changes the mood for me. I don't think I would personally put the two tracks together, though that very well may be a personal preference thing since I liked the first track's established mood so much.

02) Pig & Dan - Panama (Original Mix)--->
03) Casa Flava - Eterna (Original Mix)

As the new bassline was coming in, I could tell I would like the Eterna track more than Panama. A flawless transition. Very professional. This is where my head really started bobbing. You transferred the energy perfectly. The track is mint, and the vocal spattering is minimalistic yet just right.

03) Casa Flava - Eterna (Original Mix)--->
04) Haldolium - The Last Dance (Andre Absolut Tech-Trance Mix)

The mix gets a bit darker here. Not my cup of tea necessarily, though the mix was pretty good. Probably not possible to get an entirely smooth transition here, though I appreciate the artistic daring to go between these very different tracks. I have to admit, the head stopped bobbing here and I started looking forward on the tracklist a little bit. I think you really have something going with the first and third tracks -- those two could form the basis of a really great themed set I think. The spontaneity of this tracklist really started to show a bit with The Last Dance track.

04) Haldolium - The Last Dance (Andre Absolut Tech-Trance Mix)--->
05) Daniel Woo Robles Feat. EMRI - Evolution Revolution (Original Mix)

HEAVY bassline. Very dirty. I like the idea of bringing it in hard and heavy like that right after the break, but I think it's a little too much. Tone down the EQing a bit and it would work much better. Something about the tribal + tech doesn't work for me. Again not my favorite track.

05) Daniel Woo Robles Feat. EMRI - Evolution Revolution (Original Mix)--->
06) Austin Leeds & Kobbe - Mindkiller (Happy Killer Remix)

I didn't think the Austin Leeds track would be so heavy. Again technically very good mixing. Hardly even notice the transitions unless you're paying attention. It pains me to say it, but I think you're technically much better with the heavier stuff, even though I thought your opening track choices were spectacular, and would have loved to hear a continuation of that sound.

06) Austin Leeds & Kobbe - Mindkiller (Happy Killer Remix)--->
07) Rick Pier O'Neil - America (Joy Marquez Remix)

Same: great mixing, a bit hard for my taste.

07) Rick Pier O'Neil - America (Joy Marquez Remix)--->
08) Corbett & Troia - Highway Rat (Original Mix)

I like this track actually quite a bit. The surreal soundscapes are very cool. It makes a very interesting departure from the techy sound preceding it, and allows a neat little bridge into the Derek Howell production following it.

08) Corbett & Troia - Highway Rat (Original Mix)--->
09) Lonestar - Uno Di Ci (Derek Howell Remix)

Now we're back to more of my style. Derek Howell is someone I regret to say I'm not that familiar with, though every track I hear of his never disappoints.

09) Lonestar - Uno Di Ci (Derek Howell Remix)--->
10) Alex Stealthy - Once (Liquid Soul's Whacked-Out Rmx)

Mint track, though I hadn't heard this remix before. Your mixing is really good mate. There have been a number of really fantastic transitions in this set.

10) Alex Stealthy - Once (Liquid Soul's Whacked-Out Rmx)--->
11) Absolut & Blade - Pure Edge (Original Mix)

Ok track, but fits well here. No complaints.

11) Absolut & Blade - Pure Edge (Original Mix)--->
12) Shiloh - I Really Want U (Andre Absolut Remix)

I saw this track with a little trepidation, because I didn't really like that tech-trance remix from earlier. But this one is much better. Could have done without the vocals maybe, but all in all a good track that could probably move a floor.

12) Shiloh - I Really Want U (Andre Absolut Remix)--->
13) Undertide - Ides Of November (BP Zulauf's Phunkee Tech Slammer Mix)

A much more subdued track and clear signal that the set is winding down. Someone else mentioned that it is perhaps a little too subdued due to some volume misalignment. That could be the case. But the mood is also much less heavy. I like the track, but it's a little too relaxed for this position in a set like this. It doesn't really fit in with the bangin' stuff before it.

13) Undertide - Ides Of November (BP Zulauf's Phunkee Tech Slammer Mix)--->
14) Siberian Son & Alex Stealthy - Going Home (Original Full Moon Mix)

Again, I really like Alex Stealthy, and I think this is a great concluding track, though the actual ending was a bit abrupt. However, I feel that the first three tracks and last two tracks of this mix don't match the meat of it. I think you have two suberb mix ideas here that you tried to roll into one. One is much more melodic-based, with sweeping synths and light percussive flair, and the other is bangin' dark tribal/tech house. Perhaps they'd make a good two-cd set?

If you ever record another set that has more of that melodic house feel, let me know, because I want to be first in line to hear it. I think you had some suberb ideas in here, and technically a great deal of it was simply fantastic. You may have overreached a little bit with your track selection in trying to encompass different corners of the genre, but you did stay well within your ability to pull it off.

It's hard for me to sum up what I feel about this mix. I think it's technically fantastic, but I don't know if it will have a lot of replay value for me because I didn't particularly care for the middle section. It was a thrilling first 15 minutes, and the last 15 wasn't half-bad either. But that middle 45 wore on me a bit, and I fear that it didn't entirely work for me. In any case, a solid effort, and I do look forward to seeing what you do next!

Cheers.
