it holds no religious significance to me, only the appeal of being joined publicly and all the recognition that stems from that.

Its a higher 'perceived' level of commitment and dedication to one another (obviously 'perceived' is the key word, bc this is only the case, what 50-60% of the time? Yikes... but its the idea behind it, even if many dont seem able to make such a lifelong commitment.
