What makes a good set?
Ya know, you often sit and wonder... what REALLY makes a good dj set? I have to say, the mood. Cuz right now Im in a fantastic mood and Markus Schulz is just killin' it.

setting for one... a good set to listen to on the radio, a good set to party to at a club, at a lounge, in your car, etc...?
let's assume it's at a club... i *think* a good set is predicated upon the flow and track selection a dj can provide... mixing skills are important, but not THE most important aspect in my mind... it's about the songs that are being played, & the order that they are played in...
i like a A Dj to build his set up bit by bit warm up abit dont give to much away to fast slowy progress it and get into it ' there late on get more progressive & Start to bang some the top tunes out & end on a high
i agree with all-nite-freak's comment also he got a point also its not what is dropped but when its dropped.
IMO; track selection mostly (not just individual tracks, but which tracks a grouped together and which ones are contrasted), then flow and progression, and least important is mixing.
in a good set nothing is less important. flow, progression, flawless mixing, tracklist/arrangement, creativity and technique are all equal details that i look for in a set to be considered good.

personally I cannot stand deejays that play the same tracks as the rest of the world. The great thing about Anthony Pappa, was that he played those hard to find and weird whites and they just flowed.
Tracks I haven't heard 10,000 times.
Which is near impossible to find lately.
if we're talking about a recorded set for listening to at home, then a lot depends on the quality of the recording and atmoshphere/vibe that it gives.
For instance: PvD - Energy 2003, the tracks are good but its the way its recorded that gives it that something special. Why can't more livesets have better recordings?
They used to sound much better, eg: Paul Oakenfold - Creamfields 99 sounds amazing!!

Good intro, good outro, a nice flow (be it from slow - medium or from medium - fast), with some unknown tracks that I havent heard before.

Track selection.
the holy trinity: tracklist, mixing and flow.
a good set is just like a good steak. u gotta have all the ingredients to make it taste good.
so u gotta have a nice intro (preferably) and work out with some songs that are not going full force (i guess unless u like hardcore or some retarded shit)
anyways the mixing has to be dead on and if ur a dj like myself u can hear when someone is fucking up REALLY EASILY. and i know from experience i do look for the fuckups because then i judge (everybody else does too).
then u gotta apply some heat to the songs..eventually adding more and u gotta study your crowd (unless its a mix @ home)
seeing how the crowd reacts is vital to success.
eventually just go nuts hit it hard and make sure if ur a dj that u as well go nuts while spinning. no one likes a dj that just stands there and does nothing except mix. we love it when they start jumping and going nuts because it pumps us up too.

Track selection (unpredictable, new material) & flow above all else for me
A DJ who has real ability to from techy, hard stuf to lift it up again is also a real plus point. So many DJ's go hard and stay hard and cant find ways to bring a crowd back up again.
For me it really depends...
1. It a club:
It's pretty much about the tunes and tunes only. I wanna hear good mixing too of course, but so long as the tracks are great, then flow and mixing takes the back seat. The track for me have to be solid, not floor fillers or popular tracks.
Best from my experience for this: Matt Hardwick
Worste: Judge Jules
2. On a CD:
Flow, opening/ending mixing skill and tunes pretty much all the same. I expect near perfect mixing, with interesting openers and finishers. My favorite sets do nothing but flow from the opener too. Some weaker sets start immensly, but tail off on the 2nd tune cause they simply can't compete with a brilliant opening track.
I also like to hear fresh tracks, not always have to be fresh off the CD burner either, just rare or over looked or from an unsigned artist. New tracks that make you think, wow. This is mint!!!
Best for this: J00F, Nick Warren & Scott Bond (and of course I guess you can say Sasha and Digweed.)
Worste: Tiesto (He is hit or miss with mix cd's) and more or less ANY so called club/dance CD not compiled by someone with half an idea of what they are doing.
3. Internet Radio
Very similar to CD's. I like DJs who play what they like, not what they think other people will like. You get alot of DJs who will play something just because a lot of others are. For me the stand apart DJs will play what they like, whilst keeping mixing, flow and stuff in mind. Or will play something for a reason.
Best: Manuel Le Saux, Ultrafusion/Mike Mackay (where the fuck has this guy gone?!), Graham Gold.
Worste: Can't think of any, but I am sure you lot can.
if its funky, its prob good.

i'd say the tracks you play and if they blend or contrast with each other in good ways. you can always tell a fantastic mix when the dj picks two tracks that go really well together. that and keeping the energy flowing...building mostly.
