The refs at this World Cup really suck.

they just do... and what's up with the little microphone.

this is a thread for all those missed calls.

#1 japan should've never had their first goal - and had a PK called later in the 2nd half.

#2 just now France should've had a PK for a handball.

fucking agreed. the ref for germany - costa rica was bonkers too!

The ref. of the openingsgame was actually pretty good imo, commentators here thought that he had a great chance of doing the Final after his good performance

Referees allways suck at these large events, blame Sepp Blatter for trying to win points from small country's by giving them refereespots at large events, Blatter is a big arse who should be shot

I wouldn't imply dat all European referee's are good (remember the one from the Champions league finale ) but overall their at least a bit better

Well, its a big event, and the referee's are under international pressure to make a good and fair performance, and it will never be totally fair.
I disagree with the Italy - Ghana game referee, way too easy on the Ghana players, they were getting way too agressive, and the fact he had to stop the game every 2seconds for a foul on the Italians ruined the game and really ruined the result the Italians could have had.

i thought the refs for the US-Czech game were pretty good. the ones for the Mexico-Iran match seemed pretty decent too. i missed the call on japan's goal but the later no-call was supposed to be a make up for it or so the commentators said.

The ref on the france and swiss game was a fuckin joke. he just loved to give yellow cards

I agree that there have been some botched calls, but France shouldn't have had a penalty; it was in no way an intentional handball from the Swiss defender.

That Japanese goal was borderline, but it was cancelled out later by the official ignoring Cahill's late challenge in his own penalty area. I suppose two wrongs make a right.

What's a bit silly is all the bookings for pedantic reasons, such as the Swiss player cautioned today essentially because the French took the free kick as fast as possible and kicked into him. Or for when the Swiss didn't kick the ball into touch as Henry lay injured... off the field. Ironic then that the ref didn't give Abidal a second yellow for a clumsy tackle from behind near the end of the match.

Some very inconsistent work all in all, but nothing really match-deciding yet. Let's hope it stays that way.

I dont know if its just me, but maybe there should be two refs on the fields, so they can have a better look or understanding of what goes on. I see alot of miss calls in football..but just my two cents.

I would not say "refs really suck"... But the strangest referees have been today. The one who "whistled" S.Korea-Togo gave free kicks(?) too easily (when there was no physical contact!).

The one in France-Switzerland gave yellow cards too easily...


But it isn't an easy job to do.

But the microphones ? Maybe they are for contacting the side referees? I know the main-referee (not sure if it's called like that) get's a beep/signal when there is a offside but maybe they have also some kind of radio communication also...??

i didn't see today's games which might have had a couple bad calls, but so far i think the refereeing standart has been quite decent. clearly better compared to 2002 at least.

this is my list of bad calls which influenced the results:

1. Germany-Costa Rica: one of Wanchope's goals was offside
2. Argentina-Ivory Coast: wrongly disallowed goal to Argentina
3. Italy-Ghana: one penalty not awarded to Ghana
4. Italy-Ghana: massive oportunity for Italy awarded wrongly an offside
5. Italy-Ghana: on the same play, Kuffour not been given a card after a barbaric tackle from behind that would deserve a red card

and that's it, not too bad in about 10 games. I'm not counting the Japan goal since I have some doubts, the japanese player who blocks the keeper appears to be there due to being pushed by the aussie. Didn't see the play with full attention tho.

You can't see everything during a game, they all do their best and no, this is not Italy so you can go and bribe them.

But I agree on the new rules about not touching the ball, and if you do so, you'll get booked. Also, there are some referee's who really shouldn't got the chance in this World Cup.

Euro U-21 had great refs, mostly anyways..

Italy - Ghana was the worst ref so far. He was Brazilian so I see why he was biased...

Biased for who? The ghana players were playing very rough, a lot of elbows in faces, tackles over the top of the ball as well. The penalty shout maybe would have been a penalty if the ghana player never started falling about a yard before making contact with the two italians. I don't see how he was biased for anyone, just missed a lot.

Imo the refs, while trying to cut out diving, have missed some clear as day fouls. The japanese penalty that wasn't awarded was scandelous.

Apart from that, I've not really been bothered greatly by them, I like their general willingness to let the game flow in the games I've watched

The Belgian ref (de bleekere) had a good game, Ivanov on the other hand made some crazy decisions, in spite of his huge bag of experience

i remember him making bad calls a zillion times, always allowing players to waste time without any consequences, and just being a complete jerk - he even refused to shake his hand with a player!
