Teh Review
01) Set starts off on a great note with a nice melody and juicy bassline. 1:16 -- Wasn't enjoying this riff. Some parts of this track had very weird electro sound effects that seemed out of place. G & D have a very diverse style of productions, but most of the time I find them quite bland. 3:17 -- ahhh perfect, I love that high hat with that melody but it only lasted a short time. Almost a winner. Close, but no cigar :P
02) 4:03 -- Good cut on the highs. 4:20 -- Perfect transition. I've heard the original on the radio, I just had no idea what the artist or name of the track was called. 4:48 -- Huge beat here, love it. absolutely love these vocals. 6:04 -- Another thick juicy bassline with a lovely high tap riff to accompany it. Without a doubt this is a winner.
03) 9:04 -- Another perfect transition. Good job at keeping the flow consistant, especially with the basslines. As always I'm a stickler when it comes to vocals and I definately thought the vocals ruined the song. A dub version would have been great 11:04 -- Trippy effect here, too cool. 11:34 -- Absolutely loving this buildup, keep it comin'. 13:49 -- This song has a huge build here! Almost a winning track, just need a dub version
04) 14:49 -- Started creeping in nicely here. 15:34 -- Ahh you definately should have dropped the bass in way louder here. Track 3 had a very heavy bass in it so you should of either slowly drowned out the bass in track 3 while increasing track 4 or just brought in track 4's bass alot louder. Wasn't a bad transition but I thought the flow took a downturn and lost alot of that driving energy the past two tracks had. Vocals aren't bad in this one, but same thing they just don't float my boat.
05) 19:49 -- Very good again creeping those high taps in slowly. 20:19 -- High taps really hit you hard here. 21:00 -- Should have cut the bass earlier on. Seemed like an abrupt bass change at 20:03 where you made the final transition. 21:49 -- Liking this part. 23:18 -- Mmmmm nice soothing vocals here. 23:47 -- Nice change here with that guitar riff. This track definately has that funky tech-house type of feel to it. Hard for me to describe since I never listen to this style but its interesting nonetheless.
06) 26:14 -- Great job, flawless transition. 26:30 -- Oohh that bass kick is just awesome. What a nice trippy funky beat. 27:29 -- Ugh, not enjoying that high pitched alarm sounding riff. 28:43 -- Ohhh again that amazing bassline kicks. Wish the whole song was like this without that ear piercing sound back at 27:29. 30:04 -- Ahh here it is again. well, this songs a half a winner. The main bassline is perfect with the high taps and funky rythem to it but that high pitch "noise" needs to go.
07) 30:48 -- More high taps slowly melting into track 6. 31:18 -- XLNT, loved that quick cut. That last song had a very annoying high pitch to it. This track has a nice buildup at 33:09 but I'm not digging this track whatsoever. Neeeeeeext!
08) 36:06 -- Another XLNT transition. 36:35 -- Nice cut on track 7. Volume seemed a bit too loud though. 36:50 -- That bass and piano riff go together so perfectly. 38:04 --- OooooOOooOOo AaaaHhhhhh I'm in love with that piano now. 39:03 -- Amazing buildup, keep it comin'!!! 40:02 -- Damn good bassline here. Woooo even bigger buildup at 41:31. Hands down this track rocks.
09) 42:59 -- PERFECT transition. Loving these vocals right away and that bassline is keeping the set nicely flowin'. Yeah baby, I asked for it and you kept it comin'. 45:56 -- OMG that bassline is absolute disgusting. Bassline, melody, vocals, rythem are perfect. Coulnd't have asked for a better follow up track. This is the progressive sound I'm always looking for in a mix. Something that really stands out from the rest of the pack of mainstream music. This is the highlight of the set and I'm definately buying this track!!!
10) 48:12 -- Could hear the offbeat bass. 48:24 -- Nooooo, you had it flowing so nicely. This was a rough transition. 48:53 -- Final transition here and this song just doesn't work after that nice dreamy track 8. Completely ruined the flow for me and can not stand those vocals
11) 52:20 -- Bass slowly starts melting in here. 52:35 -- Cranked the bass here too high for a moment. 52:50 -- Final transition worked well here. Gladly that last track is gone. Really had a hard time listening to those vocals. Cool rythem to this track just don't like the high taps. They seem out of sync with the rest of the track and no not out of place, just completely out of sync. 54:33 -- Nice trippy buildup here, I'm liking that. 55:03 -- Right here is what the track should have been like throughout and not overcrowded with the highs. 56:47-56:59 was out of sync.
Conclusion:
At the very least this set is a HUGE improvement over your last mix I heard on May 9th. This could be due to the fact that it does have some progressive elements in it. However, I must agree with Az here and inform you that most of this is just standard "house". Prior to downloading, I had not heard any of these tracks so it was quite refreshing hearing this mix. Your mixing is near spot on with some minor adjustments needing to be made here and there. Likewise, like your previous set you seem to lose it near the very end of the mix. ie. it was out of sync around 56:47-56:59. As far as your track selection is concerned, that is where you have improved the most. However, you still need to work on your track selection but most importantly your flow throughout your sets. Mind you, you also have improved since your last mix but you still need to structure your set a little better. Just take your time and listen to all the tracks your going to mix and see which ones sound like an opening, closing, and climax. If your doing this spontaneously its more understandable but nonetheless keep practicing.
As for the goodies:
Mixing/Beatmatching -- 8.5/10
Track Selection -- 7.5/10
Flow -- 7/10
The Set -- 7.5/10
I've got to hand it to you as your doing a great job at keeping it real by being unique and experimenting with new house all the time. As stated this mix had major improvements over your last set I listened to. All you need to work on is being a little more consistant as far as structuring your set. The flow was working great for a few tracks and then you would change it up too much like track 9 into 10. As seen from my first review I'm pretty harsh when it comes to critiquing peoples mixes but I feel if I don't let someone know where I think they need improvement then no one will. Don't let up Vakus, you've got talent, you just need to take full advantage of it.
My 2 Cents 8^)
Thanx for the review |3 |_ @ Z 3 |, they're always very insightful. As for style, I feel it is a progressive and funky house set, just didn't want to put funky in the title since I thought it would scare anyone from downloading it.
I'll keep working on your recommendations. I'm working on structure, just need more good tracks.
About that Gnarls Barkley track, I absolutely love it also. It was really funny and cool watching them on the mtv movie awards performing "Crazy" dressed up as Star Wars Characters (Darth Vader was the singer, Chewbacca was the drummer, couple of pilots the guitar players). If you haven't seen it, it's really cool, look for it and try to watch it. And the track is so good, it's a very enjoyable experience.
About that part out of sync in minute 56, you have to talk to Oxia about that (lol), that's just the way the track goes.
Track number 10 maybe would've worked better without the vocals, the original track: Chris Lake - Changes. But it is what it is.
Well thanx again for the extensive review and will work on making the next one better.
real nice set. its good to hear good talent coming from Puerto Rico. keep up the good work. Im sure ill hear more from u in the future.
keep bangin'
