How Old Are You and Your Views On Trance?

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and have been quite amused reading the huge number of posts slagging so and so DJ off and stating that such and such genre is absolute shit. Also read quite a few arguing about what type of trance is good and whats bad e.g. '98 '99 trance vs present day trance or techy trance vs armin style trance (please correct me now if I'm wrong but when you put ASOT I assume it stands for a state of trance).

Anyway, I think I'm gonna enjoy joining in some of the debates on here but was curious to know what sort of age the rest of you are and how long you've liked trance music. I'm guessing by a lot of the posts on here that many are in their teens but I could be completely wrong.

I would also like to know what your views on trance are at this time. Just a short paragraph is necessary. I will start us off so you know the sort of thing Im after.

I'm 23. I've liked trance since I was about 14 (1997ish). I still like trance but not as much as I did. Prefer the different styles that have developed - eg. tech-trance, electro-trance. I still think you can't beat pure uplifting trance but I find that I don't come across tunes of this sort that actually do it for me any more. Where as when I first got into it, they were ten a penny. Anyway I could go on and on but think I've set the picture...

I'm 20. Got into trance very vaguely about 3-4 years ago, but only became really obsessed with it about one year ago. Started off liking epic trance - and still do - but now I prefer darker and deeper stuff, and I'm taking an interest in old 92-ish era trance.

I am 15-16 y.o. I started listening to trance when I was 13. I was listening mostly to classics, then I joined ta.com and I heard about a radio show, ASOT. I decided to tune in but after some months I saw that this type music is not my style and I didn't find it creative...too fluffy sometimes for me. The days passed and I quit listening to ASOT .

Now I am listening mostly to house (prog ,deep, chicago <3), progressive trance and anything that is good... I don't care about what genre it is. I still like some trance tracks esp. from Thomas Bronzwaer, J00f and his gang and from some others I forget atm.
...that's me

Welcome.

Welcome to TA. I'm pushing 23, i got into trance.. Is there a right answer for this?? I started to listen to U96 in probably 93-94..
Went with that sound all the way until the eurodance era dried up.
Then when Storm - Storm, BBE - Flash, M - Razzia 99 and tracks
like that started to come out i sort of evolved from faster and more simpler sounds to a more housy-tech feel with harder kicks and a little melody(?), then when Tracks like Ferry's It's Time came out i was already getting sickened by the cheese that came out, was it cheese or just something new and differented, i don't care. For me atm it's just spinning random tech-house and try to keep a decent flow.

i'm 20, 21 in august woohoo!

anyways, i always said to people i enjoyed electronic music (after hearing electronic sounding songs like take on me - a-ha; my sister was introducing me to those type of 80s songs). i didn't know much at all until i was in europe visiting family and watching mtv. don't stop - atb, king of my castle - wamdue project, better off alone - alice deejay were the ones that i remember.
that was when i was 14. when i came back to school, friends showed me aphex twin, and i enjoyed a good part of the stuff. then i listened to xpander.
went to see delta heavy, that changed my life too, just because it was the first concert/event i went to.
until about 2004, i listened to a lot of random things, not really knowing what to look for, but loving every single thing (i went to japan and went crazy for all the velfarre cyber trance cds). in 2004, i was randomly downloading things, and found ASOT 182. another change in my life. started realizing i like progressive trance/progressive a lot more than just cyber trance. i've been recording the ASOTs ever since.
then for WMC this year, everything kinda changed again (but not too much). i've finally found my favorite of favorite. sasha's one hour set blew my mind. it's chillout, it's summer-feeling, it's "happy"/uplifting, it's perfect for me. i don't really think there's a style to this type of music; it's like a mix of progressive trance and lounge and house.
as far as my thoughts on electronic music these days, i don't have that much to say. i've been having difficulty finding more stuff like above; i'm not too big a fan of the electro stuff; and i haven't been astounded by big ASOT-played tunes. and since the scene in houston is not that big, i rarely have the chance to see events anymore.

ok, that was a little longer than i thought it would be, but i have to kill time at work here, so there ya go.

that pretty much completely sums me up, even down to the age! Got into dance music in 1996 and trance properly you could say in 1998. Started going clubbing to big trance events late 2000, just as it was starting to decline.

Posted by THE_Chris on Jun-15-2006 15:29:

21 in august, have been into electronic dance music since early 1997.
trance was never my focal point in music, but i do appreciate the olden days far more than the 'golden era' or the trance of today, if either of the latter two can even be called as such (trance).

i haven't heard enough 'modern trance' to have a deeper informed opinion of it.

Posted by DJ Intrigue on Jun-15-2006 15:35:

I'm 20, soon to be 21 this fall. I first got into the electronic music scene about 5 years ago in 2001 when I couldn't stop playing Enigma's "Sadeness". I remember hopping online to see what other music Enigma had made and I came across a song called Push The Limits with a remix by ATB. Later on, I bought his Movin' Melodies album.

I was hooked and really came to appreciate this type of music from playing instrumental pieces in band before. It was all about BT, Chicane, PvD, and ATB in particular for a good year after that. I bought a few of their albums and enjoyed them quite a bit, but it wasn't until I bought Max Graham's Transport and Sasha's GU:013 that all that changed.

I remember being so impressed by both mix cd's that I looked more into progressive house and that was back in 2002 when progressive was very unique sounding and innovative, unlike now, and that segued me into house. I've always been picky with music and I value instrumentation, layering, and "real" sounding music, so because of that, I just kept trying to find out all that I could since I felt naturally more drawn to house now over trance.

It's all about house and techno for me at this point for the above reasons and because I much prefer the more rich and rhythmic sound the genres offers. Trance unfortunately doesn't fulfill any of these things for me and sounds very fake on top of everything else, so I haven't bothered with it in years because the novelty and interest are both gone now, although I wasn't into trance all that long anyway.

Mainly the styles of deep house, the older progressive and tribal house, minimal techno, dub/lo-fi/acid-jazz, and some electro house are what I alternate back and forth between.

not really, because:

  1. this is a criticism of the MD, it should be addressed by the residents of the MD, not those of the COR
  2. threads like these offer more prosects for music discussion than 20 track recomendation threads put together
  3. threads in the COR don't stay on topic for longer than 2 replies for the most part

Trance is a style of electronic dance music that developed in the 1990s. Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 130 and 160 bpm, featuring repeating melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and down throughout a track, often crescendoing or featuring a breakdown. Sometimes vocals are also utilised. The style is arguably derived from a combination of largely techno and house as well as being heavily influenced by Goa trance. 'Trance' received its name from the repetitious morphing beats, and the throbbing melodies which would presumably put the listener into a trance-like state. As this music is almost always played in nightclubs at popular vacation spots and in inner cities, trance can be understood as a form of club or house music.

I'm 18. My views on trance date back 1700 years, and were originally Arabic in origin, before being rediscovered by Renaissance thinkers to challenge accepted Western views, eventually supplanting the old Greco-centric perception of trance and paving the way for modern society.

I'm 20, going to be 21 in two weeks yay!

Well I got into trance when I was 13. I think it started with a computer game soundtrack that I really liked called "Unreal". At that time, I wasn't sure what this stuff was but I really liked it. It was more melodic than the techno I had heard at the time, and I guess had ambient qualities to it, but it was quite energetic. I eventually got into more mainstream electronic stuff that wasn't really trance like Moby, Basement Jaxx, Enigma, Delerium, Daft Punk, The Prodigy etc.

I then discovered BT from a guy in a music store who was browsing CDs. He recommended me BT because his stuff was more melodic and that is what I was looking for. I heard some stuff at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, also called Movement, but that stuff just didn't appeal to me. I was really looking for stuff like the Unreal soundtrack...melodious stuff that had this beauty and other-wordlines. I especially liked this with Enigma and Delerium, because their music was definitely other-worldy, and a bit less soft than Enya, who I was exposed to early on when my dad would play her music.

What really took things off was when I discovered Paul van Dyk, and heard "For An Angel" and "Another Way". I quickly bought all of his CDs that were released at the time (2000). I got into progressive trance/house with Sasha & Digweed, Dave Seaman and Nick Warren at that time, and of course Paul Oakenfold, who was my favorite DJ. I bought all of his CDs as well, even the rare ones. Then I found Tiesto's remix of Silence on his "Another World" CD, and from that, I got into the epic stuff from Tiesto, Armin and Ferry. So I was into epic from about 2001 till 2005. Now i've gotten pretty sick of a lot of the epic stuff, and have found more melodic progressive breaks/house/trance stuff like Snake Sedrick, Jay Lumen, Retroid, Storyteller, V-Sag, Digital Witchcraft, Cassino & Laben, Benz & MD, Andrew K, Peter McCowan, and Damien Heck (among others). And for trance, I enjoy Kalafut & Fygle, Hydroid, Mark Otten, Probspot and Micro de Govia.

Im 24 been in and out of the club scene since i was 16. Always liked trance but my fav era was around 2002. I miss old style Bonzai trance tunes just arnt made like that anymore

Of the big names Armin has wqent too commercial and way down in my estimation. He was flying in 2004 then for some reason started to play tech-trance and ASOT by numbers. Tiesto has got back to the sound he was using around 2003 and all the better for it and is prob my fav of the bigger names the now

But im into all sorts of shades of trance realy. JOOF, Jon O'Bir, Menno De Jong & Sander Van Doorn are probably my favourites and all seem to be doing something a little bit breaking from the norm. Im pretty much into anything thats energetic and is good to dance to.

i'm 20 and grown out of trance about 2 years ago.

Posted by CraZyKoKeNo on Jun-15-2006 17:12:

i'm 18, been listening for only around 3 years.

i had always liked the synthesized sound of electronic music. i first found things i liked in 80s pop (most of which was horrendous, looking back on it), alot of which used synthesizers. eventually i heard a remix of i'll fly with you by gigi d'agostino and that was basically the track that got me into electronica. from that point i started a quest to find the type of electronica that suited me most.

the 'quest' started when i downloaded the ASOT 2004 mix from some random torrent site. i thought it was the best thing i had ever heard at that point, and it probably was. from there i branched off into basically every mainstream trance DJ, but i was limited mostly to things from 2003 or later. i did this for around a year and a half, and i gathered a pretty good understanding of the more mainstream DJs.

lately (about 7-8 months) though, i've become disenchanted with the anthemic epic trance that i'd been listening to for the last few years. for the most part it was just too cheesy and overdone. i began looking for new styles. i mostly stayed within electronica, and i really got back into the chemical brothers for a few months. with my new interest in big beat i also began listening avidly to bentley rhythm ace (still love them) and boom boom satellites (out loud was good), as well as a few older breaks/big beat acts. eventually i got disinterested in them, and my tastes shifted once more. i then became interested in brit pop (oasis, the stone roses), and i still listen to those alot.

most recently, i've been getting more interested in electronica again, though not the anthemic trance i was most familiar with. i've begun looking for a more eclectic and sample based style. i had already been familiar with old school albums like paul's boutique and some of the BRA stuff, so i started looking for house tracks that piqued my interest (speaking of which if anybody has good house they can recommend PM me). though i still listen to trance somewhat, my interests are moving toward psy and hard trance, two genres i hadn't fully explored before. i've also been considering getting into classical, but i haven't done anything about that yet.

overall i'd have to say that my journey through electronica has been extremely enjoyable, and i honestly feel as though this is 'the' music style for me, or at least at this point in my life.

27, got into edm originally through house and techno around 95.Started to appreciate trance the first time i saw sven vath spin.Listened to it pretty steadily until 2003...after that other than the odd track i couldnt stomach it anymore. If i had to pick a style of trance i would still enjoy, i guess it would be tech trance. The fluffy stuff and the epic stuff makes me cringe....Viva la filthy beats

Posted by G-Con on Jun-15-2006 18:45:

I am amazed that on a trance addict forum, how many people are saying that they aren't enthusiastic about trance any more (for the most part anyway.)

Thought I should add that I love Techno (harder kind), electro house (steve angello style - some of you will tell me this isnt't electro house but then what else is it?) and last 12 months have really started to enjoy some more proggy stuff.

It;'s funny but I think the more I listen to other genre's the more I move away from trance. Having said that I think trance is still my first choice on the whole. But I sometimes think this is more because of just how passionate I "use" to be about it

Posted by dslim04 on Jun-15-2006 19:28:

I'm 21, Started listening to trance about a year ago. I don't like alot of Trance that's been producing right now. I've been exploring other EDM genres like Hardtrance,Tech-Trance,Hardstyle and PsyTrance. I am enjoying these different kinds of sounds from these genres But Trance is what I love the most. The sound of trance I am enjoying are from Andreas Schmidt aka Ace Da Brain and Jonas Stuer. Very warm, melodic and uplifting tracks from these guys.

I'm 32.
It all started with synthesizer tracks in the begin 90's. Jan Hammer, Jean Michel Jarre, Axel F, Crocket's Theme. Then to House, Acid-House, the "Smilies" period. Older Belgium and Dutch fans will remember the famous "Turn Up The Bass" series and later on "House Party".
In 91 Dance 2 Trance.
92 Dance2Trance - Power Of American Natives Heard this at the Dockside in Hasselt Belgium. Biggest Club of Europe in that period.
U96 - Das Boot
Felix - Don't want me
Jam & Spoon

94 My first Trance Nation Compilation.
Trance Nation 94

Around 96 heard BBE - Seven Days And One Week at the "Real" in Tongeren Belgium. I was the first one who ordered the vinyl at a local DJ record store (owner spoke in several famous tracks "Jack in the House, Only House Music"), so I probalby had one of the first vinyls of this track in the Benelux.

After this my cd collection grow very fast..... I became a trance fan more and more.

Now, I'm still a huge trance fan. Listen to all A.S.O.T. sets and believe Trance is more alive then ever and never will die. The numbers of trance tracks being produced are huge. So many that it looks that trance is going down. But it isn't. Years ago there only were like 5 new tracks each week. Now more like 500 each week. So you will need to listen a lot, just to select the tracks you like.

I think many don't like that trance has become commercial, but I believed years ago this would happen to trance. Some tell this is the reason they don't like trance any more, but in my view, then you're not a true trance fan. Just look harder and don't get upset on what you don't like or start to hate (Tiesto, Armin, Ferry talk I can read everywere). When I compare some instrumental tracks (true trance?) with vocal versions I sometimes like the vocal versions more. They make the track more complete without harming the trance sound.
