Smiley DJ The Minimal Sound

I have been meaning to start this thread for a while now....

Do you guys think the minimal sound is the next big fad in EDM? Much like the bleepy electro sound that took over last year...

I start this thread because over the last little while I have noticed alot of the big guns incorporating alot more minimal style tunes into thier sets...Diggers is almost full blown minimal now, Sasha has been playing alot of minimal type stuff, Deep Dish have thrown in a ton of minimal style tunes into their live sets, even Lawler was rocking some minimal and is new promo is almost all minimal. Angelo and Ingrosso's new track is of the minimal style. Minimal seems to be everywhere now...and it's been seeping in for a while now.

What do the rest of you think? Am I alone on this or what?

13. THE SHEEP

Some of the sheep are now into funky, wearing shirts with white collars and have their hair kinda mulleted at the back with a spiky bit in the middle. The other herd of sheep are still into Hard House, but its the London scene thats on it now man, ya know like Karim, proper Hard Hard House, though of course in 6 months time theyll be slating that when someone from the board says its crap. The sheep are incapable of making their own decisions and will scour the board looking to see whats cool, and whats not, then jump onto whatever bandwagon comes along next.

People diverting to minimal in ....3....2....1......(months)

I dunno i've been listening to it for over a year or so, and i've liked it. It suits me.

Minimal bothers me. It's just not right. How the hell do you dance to it? It doesn't move me at all, and I can't sit and listen to something that is so soul-less (to me, at least).

Yeah to each his own you know? To be honest it's hit or miss with people. I think even with those that like minimal. Some tracks just don't go with me very well.

download his sets, 85% of his production is minimal, 10% is electro/tech, 5% funk/jazz

I honestly thought like that, until I went to an event with minimal DJ's. And found myself dancing proper.

I didn't say TECH as in TECHNO. As in Tech house/Electro and he incorps minimal tracks into it as well. Making him not entirely a minimal DJ.

It took me some time, but slowly minimal has grown on me. I can still only handle it in doses at a time. I prefer my bangin techno beats

keep in mind that this thread is not about whether or not you like the minimal sound...it's about noticing a trend and your thoughts on where it might go. if it will have enough momentum to survive etc etc.

discussion not proclamation please.

Many times when deejays play minimal, people stop and think wtf...Whereas I go nuts to it...and for those who can understand it...it is very danceable. Sarah, and my friends Billy and George have joined me on some ocassions with this heh.

Apparently I liked minimal techno before I even knew what it was. I had a bunch of tunes over a year ago that I loved before I knew what it is. When I first heard Richie Hawtin play some at last year's Gub 9 Year I didn't like it at all. I thought it was too slow and undanceable. A few weeks later, Lee Osbourne played a very good minimal set before Miss Kitten at System and I was in love. When I found out what it was I like WTF! I It quickly grew on me, and it has been my favourite genre of edm for months now. Minimal involves less sound samples and instruments.....but my ears love it and they tell me that less = more. Beep Blip Blurp Squeak! I love the randomness and ridiculousness that is minimal techno...it's very unpredictable. I'm really glad that alot more deejays are playing this sort of conventional edm, but they may overdue it. As far as how far it will go...I don't think the mainstream crowd will ever like it, but I do see it becoming very popular...for about a year or so.

Some of my fav artists/deejays: Misstress Barbara, Luciano, Troy Pierce, John Mills, Magda, Loco Dice, Thomas Schumacher, Matt John, Lee Van Dowski, Tania Vulcano, Gabriel Ananda

I <3 MNML!!

i think a lot more people dislike minimal than those that do thats why i dont think it will become mainstream like electro but it will always be around.

FINE.

Yeah I can see that. Hernan even, his new sequential CD starts minimal.I dunno if it will carry on. It's not like tech house or tribal, it's not really for everyone like the aforementioned genres. However, the flocks of sheep work in mysterious ways... lol.

but what i've been noticing is almost a new style of minimal being brought out and incorporated into sets...

minimal...but not so minimal...yet still minimal at the same time.

hahahhahaha

if that makes any sense....

just for you Ryan...
yes I agree

I think that is the sound you are definitely hearing more of. Although I don't tend to get out to the clubs as much and even as far as downloading sets online I have only gotten about 3 in the last month and none of which have been Sasha or other dj's you have mentioned. But I have still heard the sets and I have listened to fans of that dj state how it is changing and becoming more common.

As far as where it will go. I think that you have to have an open mind to it. DJ's will notice when the play whether they get the reactions they would normally get and could change it up depending on what they are looking for or feeling at that time.

But to put a timeframe on it.. I don't think that can be done. Look at the electro bleep bleep tunes and where they are now.
