Summer of DS: Review-a-Day

Hello fellow TA Gamers!

Since it's summertime, the game industry has crawled to a slow, as usual, in churning out game titles (the reason for this is due to the fall season when we'll be seeing 2 new consoles released, not to mention the holiday season). Due to this, I'd like to present you all with a gift of sorts.

I present to you, my DS collection:

One game is currently being played by a close friend - Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time - therefore I won't get my hands on it till I'm done with this batch of games (no worries... I'll be reviewing the title as well).

I plan to review EVERY ONE of my DS games on a day-by-day basis!

The end of the reviews will coincide with the arrival of two import titles which (YUP, you guessed it!) I'll be reviewing for you, as well.

Some of you might find this useful while others, simply informative.

SO! What to do first, huh? Well... I'm leaving that in your hands. I've set up a poll for you all to vote on. The game with the most votes will be the first reviewed, marking the beginning of the 17 days of the Summer of DS. The first person to respond with a reply to a review can choose the next game!

Finally, I'd like everyone that owns one of the titles I'll be reviewing to add a little something to the review, themselves (via PM). I'll post it in my review and be sure to comment.

There you have it, gamers. Eager to post reviews WITH pics and maybe even a video (if I can get a damn new video camera).

Utilizing the touch screen and the microphone hardware extensively, Nintendogs allows you to adopt a puppy (at first - later on you can basically purchase around 20 different breeds) and raise it. You teach it tricks, take care of it, take it for walks, play with it and compete in dog shows. That's not to mention the interaction you get with the neighborhood dogs. Using "Bark Mode", the DS picks up signals from other players in the area who are playing Nintendogs. If you both sync, your puppies can play together and whatnot. Through contests and the sale of items you find around town, you make money with which you can purchase food, grooming items, toys, new puppies and even a new home.

The best part about this game? They stay puppies forever! Never grow up so they're always at their cutest.

I'm curious about Meteos too. Can you comment on it for us Yan?

Go vote! The ones with the most votes will be reviewed first.

Srsly, Yan, do you honestly LIKE nintendogs ?
That game features cool technology, but the actual "gameplay" is so horrible... I mean come on, I can play almost all games even if they seem childish like pokmon or something (which rocks )...

But nintedogs is like a game for toddlers, lol. My brother ordered the game, he's 10yo and after 1 month he already got tired of it. I myself don't like it too...

The rest of your collection seems wicked though

Go vote, peeplz!

i have given up with nintendo handhelds and will not buy a DS

in the past 15 years i have purchased

- original gameboy
- gameboy color
- gameboy advance
- gameboy advance (clam shaped one, silver)

why should i waste my money on another gameboy when it will only play incremental games?

what the gameboy DS CANNOT DO (correct me if im wrong yan):

- memory stick (to watch stuff dl'd via bittorrent)
- watch .avi .mpg movies
- tv support
- library of movies ( yes i actually have bought a few UMD movies)
- play mp3s

sorry yan, but i'm a nintendo DS hater... myabe if FF6 gets released for it (what i hear) i will finally pick one up..

That's a shame to hear.

Do note that the DS is not of the GameBoy line of handhelds (Nintendo is quietly killing off the GameBoy line due to the popularity and success of the DS).

But yes... the games coming out for the GameBoy prior to the DS were pretty weak (although some Advance titles roxxored).

Arguable whether these games are simply slight alterations, of course. I'll just leave you with a 'try it out (with the better games) before you decide to purchase it or not'. The console is THAT influential so I won't say anything further.

Careful! It's simply a Nintendo DS. Not a GameBoy.

While you are correct in saying that the DS, initially, cannot do any of those, there are (fairly) cheap solutions that can fix this 'inability' for you.

SD Version, Compact Flash Version, 1-Seg TV Tuner and the (coincidentally named) Play-Yan Micro.

They all work wonders, I've heard.

Otherwise, this intrigues me since it further points towards a rift of gamers who are more in tune with the media side rather than the gaming side (considering they take it as a negative if the console lacks external media support). To be honest, the DS is simply for gaming. It was never meant to be a multimedia device therefore it wasn't built for those purposes (DS' screens vs. PSP screen - one example). If you see that as a downfall... my suggestion would be to buy a DS anyway.

Once again, I'm sorry to hear that you dislike the DS but I'm more than sure that if you take your time to experience some of the more popular games, you'll be hooked.

As for FFVI, there doesn't seem to be any indicators pointing towards a DS release. Final Fantasy III (JPN) is being remade in 3D and will be out on the DS very soon. You might have mistaken FFIII (USA) for FFVI since it just happens to be that game with a US label.

Since you own a PSP, why not go for emulation? I'm fairly sure they've ported an SNES emulator over to the handheld. Just a matter of download FFVI and playing it once more.

Of course the best way of playing that game is on SNES itself.

wow yan, ur like a walking nintendo library of knowledge... didn't know about the options u just mentioned!

yea, but i've been burned too many times by nintendo's many handheld upgrades that i'm scared to buy the latest in case it gets upgraded again in another year (which is usually the case)

No worries. Nintendo still loves you.

The DS' thunder doesn't seem to be in danger for, at least, the next 2 years. The Lite, while mostly a fashion do-over (the screens and backlighting have been improved, as well), has only recently found its way to the final destination of sales (Europe). A year from now is way too soon for Nintendo to release yet another handheld unit (although I wouldn't be surprising if we'd be hearing something about the next-in-line at 2007's E3).
