The U.S. Media is a Disgrace
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006...in1746998.shtml
This article pretty much sums up the U.S. stance on "soccer" and its upward ascent at a snail-like pace. The media (excluding ESPN) is pretty much the one that is holding back this sport.
After I read that article, I want to apologize to the world on behalf of my country. I am sorry for this nation full of ignorant morons in the media . It seems as if this nation is still at square one.

ho hum
yet another article cowritten by middle age men set in its ways in the US...
like i haven't seen that before
America can't win at this game so they bash it, but if they were to advance everyone would have gone nuts. Saying how america is showing it to the rest of the world etc
cheers for the link, needed a good laugh

I guess everyone has to have A.D.D. to enjoy sports.
hahahahahhahahah
very good article (in the sense the guy comes up with valid points to defend his position: soccer sucks).
but we all know soccer doesn't suck and it'll catch up in the states at some point.
anyways, the game needs more spice (action) and more regulation (video replay, non-continuous clock).

here is another link for a good laugh

| In truth, soccer could be played without using a ball at all, and few would notice the difference. The game consists of 22 men running up and down a grassy field for 90 minutes with little happening as fans scream wildly. When the ball actually approaches one of the goals, the fans reach fever pitch and the cheering becomes a deafening roar. |

i read the first couple of paragraphs and then realized that ive heard it all before from the media. the game against italy was a good game, not a great game. beating portugal to open the 2002 WC was a great game for us the only problem was that it was on at 2 in the morning here. our home league is still lacking and until we can consistently deliver a quality product the average fan wont really care about the sport. however, i think there are more and more people that are becoming fanatics here. it'll take some more time but the sport is definitely going to catch the average fan and turn them into the fanatic.
interesting article. one can clearly see that the author is a bitter old failed athlete, one that either failed at "soccer" itself, or american football.
if anything, hockey is a boring ass sport. at least in "soccer" you can see the white ball getting kicked around, and you just can't miss a goal being scored. in hockey, ..um... i can't really keep track of the puck.
>JM<
if the sport aint exclusive to america then it ain't a sport. Just like how kilometers and celcius are terms strictly used in fairy tails in the west.
Ignorant idiots, just cant accept not being the best at something.

lol what a sad excuse for journalists. Unbelievable how they throw more dirt at the image of their own country.
"Mostly soccer is just guys in shorts running around aimlessly, a metaphor for the meaninglessness of life"
ROFLOL
Ignorance is very insolent, and some philosophical words won't make those morons more intelligent.
"If you don't know anything about something, do yourself a favor and shut up".
I can't believe they are passing this as a serious "story". It's like they asked a 10 year old redneck kid to list his reasons of why "soccer" sucks, then rewrote it with big words.
Seriously. "soccer sucks, it's for donkeys" turns into:
"Actually, the donkey would have a significant advantage over humans in soccer. It has four legs rather than two. The donkey has no hands or opposable thumbs, nor any need of them in order to play soccer. And smashing its head into a soccer ball probably would not cause any diminution of equine IQ. Soccer, then, would appear to be a game better suited to dim-witted quadrupeds than to human beings."

Don't let an opinion of two retarded morons convince you otherwise...
Besides, take a look all the way at the bottom of the article... what do you see??

You just have to look at football's world wide popularity to know how good a sport is, compare this with sports such as american football, swamp wrestling or hog washing and you'll notice that very few of these american sports are cared for much outside america.
As with everything else, if america can't be best at it, they try to bring it down. Football will always be the worlds number one sport, and that's a fact.
Actually,r eading through this is quite embarrasing. If this is the standard of journalism in the USA then it really is worrying. It reads as tho written for an kindergarted audience.

| Another reason why soccer will never enthrall Americans is that the game is contrary to nature. What is it that is unique to the physical makeup of human beings that sets us apart from the animal world? Two things: Our large brains and our grasping hands with opposable thumbs. Our big brain is why we're called homo sapiens, thinking man. And our ability to use our hands to grasp and manipulate objects is why one of our early ancestors was designated homo habilis, handy man. Human beings are thinking toolmakers. We're able to imagine the arrowhead in the stone and use our hands to carve it out of the rock. These two uniquely human traits have allowed us to become the dominant species on the planet. Yet soccer flies in the face of nature. In almost all other sports, the head is protected against injury. Players wear helmets and try to avoid contact with sticks, bats, balls, elbows, fists, roadways, goalposts and other things that might inflict injury on that big brain that gives humans the ability to plan ahead, calculate, strategize, coordinate eye and hand movements, anticipate the consequence of actions in other words, to play the game. But soccer players use their heads, deliberately, to contact the ball. This is contrary to all human instinct, which is to keep the head out of the way of danger. Duck, you idiot! Protecting the head against injury is deeply rooted in our nature. It's an evolutionary survival response. Sacrifice a limb if you must, give up an arm or leg, but protect your head at all costs. Yet in soccer the player is encouraged, no, expected to hit the ball with his head. This is as stupid an action as a human being can undertake. |
Like I said... read below to understand the logic behind the rant:

i honestly can never understand why people don't follow this sport based on the fact that you can't use your hands
