Worst DJing Experience

Thought I might make a nice new thread with something that didn't appear on the search

Alright so my experience was at a house party. At first i didn't even want to do the house party because i had no speakers and the pay was only 50 bucks. However after talking with the girl, i got a pay increase to 80 bucks which is a bit better.

In any event, i still had no speakers and so i decided to use the speakers that my school provides to on campus organizations. So i went up to the manager where you pick up the speakers and asked to borrow a speaker for a middle school dance (which i did dj for but earlier in the day). I decided to use that same speaker (a jbl eon g2) for the house party.

So i get to the party thirty minutes late and set up. I am djing the and for some reason my headphones give out. Only one channel on my head phones worked and at that time i didn't know how to mix with the one ear one cup method. So now a good portion of my mixes were trainwrecks. Things got worse when some girl knocked the power cord of my speaker. I had to walk across the room in order to plug the speaker back in, pushing drunk people out of the way. Then this happened again and again. I had no sound for three instances and these weren't brief periods of no sound either...they were like 2 minute interims. Well in any event, that night sucked and i just hated everybody in their and was an absolute grouch by the end of the night...i never to dj a house party for those people again. Which i found out later was because of the price increase. WTF? who gets upset about paying 30 bucks more when if they split it across the 5 residents is only 6 bucks a person.

I take this experience as a lesson learnedd...bring an extra pair of headphones, learn to mix one ear and one cup and finally place the speakers closer to me.

Maybe if they actualy like music that was enjoyable to play and not top40s crap.
Majority of house parties you do that are not for close mates will probably be work and crap work too.

I actually had a worse experience on Saturday night...

Was djing a party for a friend's bday and it was absolutely horrific! No monitors, shitty sound, could barely get a beer played til 4 AM with my friend- it was so shit. Shittest party ever. Worst club ever, in the worst room... ugh- it was disgusting.

AND - I didn't even get paid.

Posted by richg101 on Jun-28-2006 21:27:

i get booked for the best club in town...!!!! booked from 12.30 till 2.00. they have the best sound system ever! 250 capacity and a 20 000watt system. monitors are beautiful, carl cox mixer... brand new techs and cdj 800's.

now... onto the shit!

1. the club is usually drum and bass. its known as a d+b club. so no trance fans will know about the night unless its advertised. anyways the promoter got given the night.. god knows how! because....

a. he did next to no promotion. i did nt see one poster or flyer(and i had my eyes open)

b. the promoter had arrived too late to get the sound engineer to set up a locked rig. so the system was locked at safe levels. this didnt matter tho! cos three people came to the night. LITERALLY!

and one of the bastards asked me to play 'three lions' cos the football had been on.

2. the system was so nice to mix on i said fuck it, ill make the most and enjoy using a proper clean tidy rig in a proper club. OH NO! the promoter is pissed off cos no one has come so he gets in a strop and shuts the place down after 50 min of mixing.

at the end me and my mate said he will lose the place if he didnt do proper promotion. the promoter said he had done loads. sent out emails, text messages and posters. however i didnt see one piece of advertisment.

been booked again. he's got another night. god knows how. but he has it in his head that trance and hardcore go together.

the whole thing is an embarrisment.

I played trance at a hardcore night in swindon before and it went down really well. it was only in room 3, but everyone loved the 'classics'. i just played loads of stuff from the kevin and perry soundtrack and tracks that even the most casual listener would know...along with some new stuff to try and broaden thier horizons.

got another booking for a hardcore night but i dont know whether the promoter's putting me on first as a warm up set

so yeah, sometimes it can work, depends on what the crowd's like.

Even if there was no one there, why would you not mix on your tables? You only do it for a specific amount of people in the room?

The safety of my equipment. I didnt want to leave my decks open, some drunk person wanted to keep scratching. I covered them up and with the laptop I could just use auto-dj.

I'm doing a house party today. The person who is hosting loves trance and house and so do some of her friends so she said she wanted a dj who spunn that and NO hip hop, so I said Im her man. BUT, I am the kinda person that if someone comes up, drunk or not, and starts fucking with my shit I'll throw down. I have no means of replacing anything at this point and that would totally be a slap in my face.

So, I get your point now.

Posted by mzvirbulis on Jul-05-2006 06:40:

lol are there an t-shirts saying stay the fu$% away etc.

my first gig ever

I had only been dj'ing for a few months and some lady at my work needed a dj for a fundraiser she was putting on. It was for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Ojai, California.

I drove almost an hour to get out to this place. During this time I only spun trance. I told her I spun trance and she said that would be fine and the people there wouldn't mind it.

I was self conscious about my mixing still so I invited a friend (Global-Trance) to come mix with me.

The lady wasn't going to pay us for this, we donated our services since this was a fundraiser for a good cause, to raise money for the foundation in the memory of this one ladie's son that died with the disease. We would however get all the food and drinks that we wanted. That was a big plus, especially for starving college students.

We brought two big speakers + stands, positioned them so that we could use them as monitors as well. 2 turntables, and mixer. I brought 2 big bags of records. My friend was playing with my records.

We set up all the equipment...it was 100 degrees outside!!!! This was an outdoor event and we were right on the lake's edge.

I start off the set, as soon as I put on the record, people's heads turned. They gave a weird look. I was like OMG wtf. I got really self conscious and going into my first mix I fucked up. Big time. Absolute trainwreck.

After this my friend took over and delivered a really good set.

I went through all that work to bring equipment and set everything up and I practically didn't even play.

Every few minutes people would come up requesting hip hop or something more 'family oriented'. This one lady came up and was like "do you have anything that doesn't make me feel like I am in a club?" I was like wtf. This was like the worst day ever.

This is my worst dj'ing experience.

at least you didn't get mugged at knife point outside a shady club in Istanbul just before you were supposed to spin

it happened to that guy

Posted by spdandpwr on Jul-11-2006 20:02:

wow these stories are awful and make mine pale in comparison

rustyryan: at least that dj who got mugged turned out alright....

epdarks: how did you manage djing that night

Greedy: is your turntable still ok...what happened to the record (if one was on the table)

wizniz: I have seen that happen a couple of times at a house party...people have like ADD at house parties

SVGmethod: I dj'd for a fundraiser type thing...people are picky and whats worse is that the people who ask you to do these things don't realize that the dj looks bad if he doesn't play the right music and not the person who asked the dj to do the job.

Posted by epdarks on Jul-11-2006 23:51:

I just switched tracks during breakdowns or moved the fader very quickly lol. It wasn't a serious party so no big deal.

Posted by jmix on Jul-12-2006 00:27:

on the night of my first dope gig someone put a bunch of ghb in one of my drinks..

it sucked, but at the same time it was the best ever hahaha becuase I managed to totally wing it and pull it off, despite tripping all over the place and looking like a dolt.

Posted by SVGmethod on Jul-12-2006 01:26:

this one time at a house party...a friend and i were doing a tag team set. when it was time for me to lay down my first track...i had it beatmatched and everything. i went to bring it up and i thought the beats were dead on and it sounded good....turns out the crossfader was on and i didnt slide it over. I am used to keeping the crossfader in the middle, or off, and just using the upfaders. The song ended and I never actually brought in the other track. What an embarassment. Hahaha.

Posted by spdandpwr on Jul-12-2006 02:34:

i hate tag team djing...always ends up with problems...

-the guy goes in a completely different direction with songs
-guy usually tends clear the dance floor
-you still can't get drunk because you have to switch on again
