Who the hell are the lot of you?

Let's be honest here.

I don't know what Renegade sounds like (although I've always wanted to hear him say "G'day mate"). I don't know if Psy-T walks funny (you know why I'm saying that ). I don't know if Marie, being French, is fond of wearing perfumes, and what the scent of her favourite perfume is. In fact, I still have high hopes that Arbiter is actually a Hot Cuban girl that went to Florida in a floating Cadillac, reading Nietzsche in order to learn English. Even if we saw ourselves using webcams, that wouldn't be quite the same as seeing one another in real life.

However, I recognise you. The avatar and sigs end up being like clothes, and the screen names give you some kind of unique identity, such as that of real life individuals. Sometimes you can even recognise a person by the way they write a post, and I was surprised when it first happened to me (Acid Junkie recognised an alter ego of mine, Delay Llama).

The raison d'etre of this thread is not just an excuse to state the obvious though. What do you think is the difference between an on-line discussion, and the discussion you might have in real life, facing someone? What's the importance of body in communication?

What, in a more apocalyptic approach, would happen if we all met?

A diatribe usually just means it's excessively long and drawn out.

I don't know. Most people seem to project alot. I really don't and I usually keep to myself most of the time. It's pretty rare for me to be interested in social interaction with most people. It's not that I'm anti-social or anything, I just think most people are eigther mean or dumb, or a combination of the two. I'm not terribly interested in superficial relationships of any type and putting up a facade.

Although, out of most of the PDD regulars, Lira seems to be the most interesting person to meet in real life. Always nice and friendly, and a gentleman, with interesting insight on the human condition (amongst other stuff). So I gotta ask you (Lira), what the hell is Russell Crowe doing in your avatar ?

P.S. Most of you guys (regulars) are cool and civil for the most part though. Don't want to rub anyone the wrong way.

that's one of the main reasons i change my avatar and signature very rarely (if at all- as in the case of the avatar); as for writing styles, a lot of people can even be identified when they're attempting to avoid being recognised (cases in point: Radagast, Echo Of Silence, NRG2nfiniti, and more); i'd be disappointed to not be recognised based purely on my writing style.

an online discussion permits you:

• more time to re-evaluate your thoughts
  
• to phrase your words better
  
• to re-read the 'opponents' point aswell as any other related information as many times as you need (highly beneficial in my case, as my memory capacity is quite poor)
  
• to research the topic you're discussing as you're giving your opinion (being more educated)
  
• to detach from the discussion to keep your cool if needed (ashame not many use that ability)

• a lot more information to work with regarding the presentation and meaning of your 'opponent'
  
• quick responses
  
• the ability to determine whether you've 'won' or 'lost' the debate much sooner than in the online discussion
  
• ...err.. i think that's it

i certainly wouldnt engage in any political talk. i like the luxury of being able to sit at a PC & think my replies over for a while. im like a turtle- slow, but i get there in the end

^^ I agree. I'd probably avoid discussing politics with the PDD regulars if I were to meet them in real life (unless ofcourse they had a compatible world view with mine ). If we were all in the same place at the same time, discussing politics, all hell would break loose.

EDIT: Although, most of us Americans here (those of us who still care about our freedoms and liberties, I guess that makes many of us libratarians) would definetly bitch about how they're being taken away. (Like Occ, Groundhogboy, Trancer-X, Ogvh5150, stevieboy, and probably MisterOpus too)

EDIT2: And if I met Fir3start3r, I'd probably poke fun at Canada. jking

I love partying, socialising, drinking (among other stuff) and will do so every chance i get, but even though i have a large social network it's very rare that any of them will engage me on a topic such as politics, science, history, cultures, literature, et al. My circle of friends revolves around the clubbing scene so i'm much more likely to hear a conversation involving the roots of Chicago house, the direction Progressive is heading in, or how fucking shit Trance is currently than that of Politics.

I do enjoy discussing politics with others but i think that's because i'm always able to get my point accross more eloquently than others (ie. i almost always win the discussion ) but amongst the TA's here whom i believe know a shitload more than myself i'd probably become quiet and learn something!

I regret not meeting Renegade at the second Interview club night (i must have met every melbourne TA except for you James ) although i must admit my ability to string together a coherent sentence was slightly skewed after Obsession the night before and the recovery party at Scotts' all day afterwards

I'd love to meet you Lira when i'm over in Brasil sometime next year, i'll probably jump on one of those uncomfortable (but cheap!) livestock buses and pump myself full of valium for the 40 hour trip
