Enjoy your GST cut starting today!
yeah i know its not much. But everyone would be bitching hardcore if it went UP by 1%. So enjoy because its not every day that taxes actually go down!
put that 1% toward something useful. I was never gonna notice that penny on the dollar anyway.
Just my $0.02
not only wont the consumers notice it... most stores will keep it to themselves. items that add up to $1, $2 etc.. wil still be worth the same
nono.. 1% is a good start.
I saved about 60 cents today.
buying a house in this next year, will save me $3000 not too shabby
-pett
I can feel myself getting richer by the penny.

I saved 2.32 today.
that's more than 600 bucks a year! All I need to do is spend 232 dollars a day!
But remember folks ... now that the Government has cut GST 1% .. it has raised taxes on Beer to counter the loss it will take on the gst ...
Dont always think that cutting is good .. even tho its good to see gst go down .. its sad to see other things go up in light of it
1% is 1%...every penny counts! Woot!

GST was already considered a regressive tax... it becomes even more regressive as you transfer the costs over to alcohol. I don't have hard figures.. but it's not too farfetched to say that poorer people tend to drink more.... this could potentially put more people on the streets as it reduces their incomes further.. (ok it might be an exaggeration.. but it will definitely reduce their disposable incomes.. possibly with adverse effects on the children of alcoholics)

What I dont like is the staggard approach of 1% per year.
It will Cost Retailers and Businesses more to implement the change each year?

The problem is that goods like cigarettes and alcohol have inelastic demand curves. I believe that it makes sense to tax these goods more to pay for their effects. Such as cigarettes being correlated with cancer.. leading to higher health care costs. Alcohol to a much lesser extent. I don't think we should tax for the sake of taxation and attempting to dictate which goods should be taxed more or less. Some goods should not be allowed at all.. (Try to get the FDA to pass cigarettes as a product, they wont.. the only reason cigarettes are allowed is because it was marketed as a product which did not fall under FDA jurisdiction, but I digress). A tax will do nothing but collect more money. Taxation is an ineffective way of discouraging use.

What you're advocating is a spineless government. "we don't like it so we'll tax it.. but we won't ban it outright cuz we don't have the balls to" Taxation causes smuggling too..
