Most disappointing players and coaches of the WC

My list will be short.

Rooney - All that media attention I think got to him and screwed things up for England, pretty bad I may add... didn't do shit except playing football as if it was rugby. I've seen him do tons better than that at Man Utd, maybe he's not that good or maybe he just wasn't fit to play, regardless, pretty disappointing.

Ronaldinho - Should I say anything at all?... Didn't do anything for his team, absolutely nothing. He simply lacked that leadership to guide his team to victory, it is weird considering he finished the season with Barcelona on fire, but he failed to get it done on football's biggest and most prestigious competition, the WC. For those of you thinking he was better than Zidane when he was at his prime... look at the WC 98 and look at this one too.

Sheva - He entered the WC as one of the top 3 strikers, he left the tourney pretty much with nothing, missed many chances and seriously lacked that finishing touch.

There are others who might make this list as well, just to name a few we have Raul, Pekerman, Aragones, Nedved, Lampard and let's not forget our dear van Basten... I will never know what happened to RVN but Holland losing without him playing, that's unforgivable.

Donovan- a complete disgrace to US soccer

Ballack haven't scored a single one

Clearly Ronaldinho was the biggest disappointment.

I agree Lampard was very poor, and have to add Stankovic.

All the spanish team

Pekerman and Van Basten get my vote for worst coaches..

Pekerman robbed Argentina of a world cup. Germany owe their win over Argentina to him.

Van Basten turned Holland into a poor Italy-clone.. ugly, defensive football instead of the beautiful flowing football we're used to seeing from them.

I rate Pekerman as very good, but that substitution of Riquelme for Cambiasso was suicidal.

Oh yes theres quite a few

Ronaldinho (looked uninterested and lazy)
Lampard (missed a lot of great chances for england)
Del Piero (i think his days are over..)
Shevchenko (expected the captain to lift ukraines status and game play)
Henry (Not to impressed although his last match was decent)

The ones who deserve credit:

Ribery (Great midfield runs and support for strikers)
Zidane (a veteran showing his support for his team, plays extremley well when it all counts and an essential player to france)
Terry (imo deserves player of england team, heart of defence)
Cannavaro (same as Terry)
Kaka (imo works hard for brazil team unlike Ronaldinho)
Lahm (outstanding runs from the back to help team)
Zambrotta (same as Lahm)

i know there are more but i cbf writing them all + these are all the big names that impacted on the teams performances.

i agree with you about rooney. everytime he lost possession he looked like he was about to take the ball and run back to england crying. i didnt like england using him as a single striker with no one to play off of and the barrage of long balls played to him were ridiculous.

i dont know about throwing nedved's name in there. the opening game he looked brilliant but i think the loss of koller left him and the czechs with limited options.

He made a lot more mistakes than just that..

If Argentina'd had a better a coach they'd've been unstoppable.

Jesus, how could I forget Sven? The single biggest disaster ever to happen to English football. Apart from that plane crash in Munich back in '58.

Posted by metalgearsolid on Jul-03-2006 20:30:

Ronaldo-He should have scored more and played as one of the greatest players that has ever played football, rather he would whine whenever someone took the ball from him.

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Jul-03-2006 23:26:

- The entire USA team. Very poor effort.

- Lampard. You're not fooling anyone anymore Frank. Please retire from international play.

- Rooney. Where was his cool and calm demeanor from Euro 2004? Playing upfront alone last two games was Sven's fault, but he didn't look fit and his touches were far from sharp.

- Ronaldhino. Almost invisible.

- C. Ronaldo. Attitude and gamesmanship more than anything else. Devoid of class and undeserving of any respect.

Managers:

Sven - whatever he tried just did not work
Parriera - did not inspire Brazil and too loyal to the old farts
Pekerman - subs cost Argentina a game they should have won.

Yeh... you're right about C. Ronaldo... I don't know what I'll do if he ends up landing at Real Madrid, my God how can they ruin their name with such a football player.

About Parreira, He didn't disappoint me at all because I truly wasn't expecting anything from him... you might be right that he didn't sub some of the old players but imagine if he had lost with the young ones as well, it would be the same story "ohh lord how did you bench cafu, ronaldo, roberto carlos, etc. etc" I blame Ronaldinho the most for not taking the leader role and simply hiding when his team needed him the most.

hands down winner

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Jul-04-2006 00:11:

I don't understand why Brazilians crucify their players and coach for not winning. They've won 5 World Cups and been in 9 Finals out of 17...and usually always make it to at least the QF stage. Sometimes they're just not that good and this year, they didn't quite click. I said it from the beginning that Germany and Brazil wouldn't win it. I am half right so far.

Posted by King Ecnal on Jul-04-2006 00:54:

How the hell is Sheva a disappointment...? Ukraine made the quarters... I know he wasn't scoring goals every game... but please... he's not a disappointment for me at all in this world cup...

I love Lampard... but he just never had it... too bad...

Ronaldinho of course...

Luca Toni...

Donovan, Beasley, McBride... oh yeah, the whole fuckin team but DEMPSEY!!!!!!!! CLINT Dempsey is the man!!! lol...

I'm going to say Essien, cause the meathead got himself yellow'd out of the quarters, that was stupid!

Adriano sucked as well...

Peckerhead is my only vote for worst coach... no MESSI at all in the quarters?????????????????

Posted by RapidFire on Jul-04-2006 02:26:

Kezman and the serbian coach both dissapointed the hell out of me. glad theyre both leaving.

Pekerman is an excellent coach, ok, i agree with you, but it was only one, when we played against mexico, i think that the subs that he made were crucial to win the game..
I personally think that messi, is not ready yet, to play a whole game on a wrold cup, is great, but too young yet.. you will see it on south africa!!!

Peker is a good coach but that doesn't take away the he scewed up by not playing Messi vs Germany. If he had played him you along with me would be watching Argentina vs Italia tomorrow.

i thought Scheva did quite well - it's not like he had an amazing team around him you know.

my disappointments are these - I only picked top 5.

1. Ronaldinho - he was outshined by Kaka and really makes one question how he performs alongside Deco at Barca but didn't do shit on Brazil... coaching???

2. Czech Republic squad - Nedved was alright but I really expected them to make it to the 2nd round - all those old players going out in the first round for their final perfomance is sad.

3. Refereeing - they've gone to shit with all the carding - bullshit calls, missed calls, stupid calls - what can I say they were a disaster this time around. Really missing Collina

4. Serbia & Montenegro defense vs. Argentina - I have no idea what happened there but they were not the club that only let in 1 goal during qualifiers. I'm not saying they deserved to go through but 6 goals made my face look like this

5. last but not least - Wayne Rooney - red card or not, if any of you play soccer you know well enough that you have good enough control of your ankle to lift it if you feel something underneath it - he was also looking down. Yes a punk move by Ronaldo to whine about it to the ref but regardless Rooney is a world-class player that is fully capable of avoiding that contact - or at least make the effort to lift his foot when he feels something other than grass underneath it - I watched the replays - mother****** made sure the cleat sunk in.
