James Holden on Minimal, Discuss...

quote:
"Minimal has no meaning. It's progressive with a few new plug-ins! Especially now you get these minimal geeks who think they are really cool because they like this ketamine music. I grew up with minimalist classical music thats minimal. And the bouncing ball delay effect out of Ableton - well done, you've loaded a plug-in! I don't really respect people that jump on the bandwagon and that is largely the problem because people put a word to what is trendy.

Not really.

I think his style is IDMish progressive house, with maybe a few minimal elements in to it.

He's one to talk about jumping on band wagons. stupid looking cnut

Posted by torontotrance on Jul-03-2006 22:07:

He is saying what's already been said.....but nice to see Holden come out of his pot induced haze once in a while to say something actually meaningful for once.

In previous interviews hes said that he wants his career to be judged from the creation of Border Community. Why?

Because from that point it was entirely my own thing and what I believe in and my own free will. Before then it wasn't. It's that simple.

Great interview btw, he hits the nail on the head quite alot here

I don't like minimal shit.

When I think of minimal I think of

Posted by PETRAN on Jul-04-2006 02:06:

errmmm...

When i think of "minimal"(just minimal) i think of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley and John Adams...probably the stuff holden grew-up with (well, that's what he is saying in his interview..."minimal classical")

But if it's "minimal techno/house" than it's "basic channel" all the way!!! (what is this swedish house mafia garbage anyway? Is it trendy?)

Nice lad though...and he has a very nice taste for music...My bloody Valentine, M83, 70s Kraut-rock...Bravo!

Now, is he going to release a solo-album or a band-album or something?!

Posted by Dj_Es-Dva on Jul-04-2006 04:07:

hmmm very wierd, i do consider holden to be minimal...but minimal techno like hawtin does suck badly....i accidently found out harmonia was made in the 70's which i found rather intriguing, great guy over all though

It's always nice to read the thoughts of an artist you've admired for years, but unfortunately, and much like most of his recent productions, I feel it's over my head. Musicwise because he's evolved into something I don't enjoy as much. Over my head probably because I just don't know enough about what he's talking about. It feels like he's saying what he made in the past isn't really what he wanted to do, meaning what I love isn't really him. Well, boo-hoo, I'll survive. Still looking forward to his EP.

so your saying that b4 border community he was being forced to dj and produce techno & progressive house/trance by some bully ?

and that after that bully died he was able to think on his own ?

Personally the last great piece of work he did was his Balance CD. After that he completely changed. His first essential mix is a classic. That fuckin hypocrite jumped on the bandwagon along with so many other dj's.

I fail to see what bandwagon he has jumped on. Show me other people's prior sets who sound like his.

I'd like to know of any CD's which resemble At The Controls as well.

As amazing as it may seem, it's not called music business for nothing. When you are signed to a label you pretty much do what they want you to, because if they don't like what you are doing, they're not going to release it. That is why a lot of artists create their own labels after they get a name for themselves - it allows them to do exactly what they want to do.

Was he already signed to a label b4 border community?

Even if he was, he could've put out tracks under different alias'.

Also, a label has NO CONTROL over what a dj plays. Are you telling me the the tracklist for his 1st essential mix featured tunes he didn't want to play ?

I've heard a couple Fabric cd's which sound like him but other that that i dont know because i dont listen to them.
Other dj's who i think sound like him (based on live sets/radio mixes):Locodice, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Tania Vulcano, Ricardo Villalobos, Clive Henry. There's got to be loads more though, i just haven't heard them (fortunately).
