Hilarious Commentator quotes

Ok post things the commentators have said that were funny. Mention the situation, channel, country and the match.

ITV, England.

Germany v Italy, first half.

Nice bit of control by two German players taking a shot on goal.

Commentator - "Its good to see the two strikers playing with each other"

Posted by isoterra on Jul-04-2006 21:56:

haha, i heard that too

there was another moment from the same commentators in that match where he commented on how lenient the referee had been, and about a second later the first yellow card game out.. class

think my favourite quote of the tournament was gary linekar in one of the sweden matches.. "You know Ibrahimovic was once arrested for impersonating a police officer.. after this game he might get arrested for impersonating a footballer"

with our American programming, we get about 10 funny/stupid comments from commentators...

I heard "Michael Beckham" about two times in the span of 15 seconds during the England-Paraguay game....

And just the other day.... Rooney had a touch, and I heard; "Rooney, plays with Liverpool, they're known for their rough play, the scousers" - didn't even correct himself...

we don't get funny, we get screw-ups because we have MLS players old dudes commentating...

Posted by fastmp3 on Jul-04-2006 22:59:

hahahahahahaha well rooney is a scouser (isn't he born there) ?

Posted by King Ecnal on Jul-04-2006 23:00:

yeah I know he's from Liverpool.... but this dude was specifically saying he plays his ball at Anfield...

Posted by denys envy on Jul-04-2006 23:23:

Tommy Smyth on ESPN has a few, i can't think of a ton right now but some i remember are

"The poles have struck the pole twice"

something about "Like madonna at a concert"

i forget, he's pretty cool tho.

Its harrowing to keep hearing the american commentators refer to the came as soccer, it spoils the intensity of the occation... The Soccer World cup

One of the commentators refered to Zidane as Zanadine Zidine during the spain game

I disagree, I remember that moment. He was just referring to him being born in Liverpool... which he was.

Wayne Mark Rooney (born 24 October 1985 in Liverpool)

no he said he "plays with Liverpool" - after referring to Ronaldo who plays at ManU...

I KNOW wayne is from liverpool... which is why it was shocking, cause he was saying he plays his club ball at LIVERPOOL FC...

MORE importantly, why you defending the horrific espn/abc commentating of Balboa, O'Brien, Stone and Dellacamera... I can't stand any of them... Dellacamera is probably the only one I can stand... all I ask is for Tommy Smyth to do every single game for espn and abc... is that too much to ask? lol...

Posted by tathi on Jul-05-2006 00:05:

someone on the BBC said something along the lines of:
"a 400 million dollar team needs to dive their way to the finals"
during the Aus vs Italy game

Posted by King Ecnal on Jul-05-2006 00:11:

I was googling the shitty USA commentators and came across this posted on this blog:

quote:
O'Brien's description of Crouch: "He's tall, like a skyscraper..."

Someone please kill the guy.

Weird that's not how I remember what he said but I think he fumbled his words a little but Balboa knows that Rooney plays for Man U. Actually I'm not defending them, I think the U.S. commentators are terrible!!! I've been so used to having the English guys doing the games I watch it's irritating having to listen to 1998 U.S. world cup team rejects doing every game. John Harkes is another.

Posted by King Ecnal on Jul-05-2006 00:16:

No, I know he fumbled his words... I know he knows rooney's on manu...

maybe I expect too much... all I was looking for was a correction... but they just let it slide... I'll stop bitching now...

Alan shearer before tonights game.

quote:
"Apart from Cannavaro, Zidane, Henry and Ballack there isnt any other players in the last 4 who would replace any of the england squad."

What little respect i had for this imbicile has all but disappeared the moment these utterly ridiculous words left his lips.

He honestly still believes england are a wealth of talent after their somewhat shambolic world cup performance!! As a half italian living in britain, comments like this not only insult me, but anger me greatly as I have to pay for my tv licence to listen to such utter shite.

The only players from the england team that would get into a squad out of the last 4 are gerrard and a fully fit rooney. The rest proved that they are nothing more than your typical over-hyped england first team player.

It's comments like this that have put me off supporting the english nation team.

Posted by fastmp3 on Jul-05-2006 21:18:

Shearer is exagerating

Posted by Goashem on Jul-05-2006 21:26:

gary(?) bloom commenting on the spanish commentator next to him after the spanish scored the goal vs france:"well he was going mental when they got a throw in, you can only imagine what hes doing now"
hahahaha

Posted by Unique2701 on Jul-05-2006 21:36:

THe Dutch commentator said something like: Ronaldo should really quit his dieing swan act, after the 358932 zillionth time Ronaldo fell and looked at the referee.

Posted by CranberryJuice on Jul-05-2006 22:42:

french TV :TF1

cameras showing Zidane ...commentators saying "and the man of the match was .....Thuram!" (big zoom on Zizou) that was funny

yeah honestly at very least Vieira and Zambrotta/Miguel shown much more than the corresponding players on the english team.

The Costa Rican commentators are just horrible, they mix up player names, they don't really know whats going on, they call Camoranesi "Camaronesi", they jsut got it right today though..theyre fucking idiots overall and it sucks they dont show this on ESPN.

liam brady "quote on rte sport ireland"

Posted by noikeee on Jul-09-2006 21:44:

our commentator Jose Peseiro (manager of Sporting last season), who came up with his own trendy term to describe set pieces/dead ball situations: "tactical schemes" he said that the entire cup and managed to infect other commentators with it
