From an Englishman...

Around 2 years ago I never quite thought id ever be saying these words, but here goes. Id like to thank, despite the world cup has not finished, for being great ambasidors of the world cup 2006.

When you beat us to get the world cup, I was devastated. I really wanted England to host it. I have to say though that in my lifetime (im 22), Germany have hosted the best football tournament to date.

I think the handling of all English fans over there has been fabulus. You've taken no shit from the few yobo's who have had a bit too much to drink, as you should do, yet you've opened up big screens and welcomed many Englishman to your towns and cities. I know a few friends who've been and said that they were really suprised about the friendly attitude of so many people.

You've put on a fabulus world cup, you've changed my mind over the type of nation and people that you are and I was actually hoping you'd win tonight against the Italians.

I still think its good how we have a rivalry with you as a country as it add's spice to any match, but my respect for you as a footballing nation and as a people has gone up in the highest regard.

Felt this needed a seperate from from the 5000 page world cup thread. Also sorry I dont speak German so I am hoping you all can read this, or if someone wants to translate?

thx a lot, thats nice to read!
i think this was a very good possibility to show whats germany really like...and to destroy some prejudices abouts our country...

we'll see us at the european cup 2008!

thank you
and you're right.. people who discovered germany in a positive way during this world cup, that's a little success!

i think this is the most important success!
the world cup is 'just' a game, but what this world cup meant to germany and all it's guest was more satisfying than anything else related to the people who visited the stadiums or fan festivals or whereever they've seen the matches...

Oh man, I suppose I've cried enough tonight, but your post just makes me wanna cry all over again!
I think that this World Cup has been the best for decades, if not centuries, that has ever happend to this country....
Oh damn, I feel tears stinging again... I'm better off for this night.
Thanks mate!

I totally agree.

Like I've said before (not on the forums tho): It feels really good being able to show the german flag as someone of my generation and not being abused as a "Nazi".

thanks for the nice words.

Posted by vandit_freak on Jul-05-2006 07:30:

We really appreciate your kind words. In return, I have to say that the english visitors were very kind and not as "difficult" as expected. There were no major problems with british fans at all, you've been really great guests. I've got to know a few of yours and I really enjoyed it. The WC was a really good opportunity to show that the prejudices about Germans were not true. During the WC a whole country grew together and we were all living one dream - together. We know sing our anthem, show our flags and are proud of our team and our country but all in a positive way. I hope we can keep a bit of this atmosphere for the days after the WC.

Well from what the BBC and ITV (our broadcasters) have been saying, the German people are moer than willing to discuss about their history of the war etc... I used to have a very prejudice view until studying Hitler, the war etc... at uni, and you bascially just learn that we're all human and that in Germany a extreme leader was able to manipulate. Its not as if your people are happy about such a dark history, yet being so open about something that i thought would be a taboo subject is admirable.

Hope the English were good visitors to your nation, we must have the biggest following in the world in any competition...its something that I am proud of, and I hope we helped boost ur tourist industry

Hey, thanks for the nice words. It's great to get such positive reactions regarding our country and the WC we hosted, this realy means something to us.
I been to public viewing places watching matches of other teams a couple of times including 'England - Sweden' and I felt very comfortable among the 60000 Brits there... good drinking mates btw .

Oh yes, they were. I had a lot of fun with them at the FIFA FanFest in Hamburg.

Weve lost the semifinal - but we won the world

Posted by Lebezniatnikov on Jul-12-2006 12:55:

I second the sentiments of the English...

I was in Berlin for opening weekend, and celebrating with Germany after their first win was probably the most fun I will ever have in my life. Truly an amazing time. I was with 7 other Americans, and after the weekend we all became football fans (none were before) and we all adopted Germany as our team for the World Cup (even went so far as to wear jerseys out to the bars for each game after, no matter where we happened to be at the time). I was in a bar in Norway during the semis with a bunch of pro-Germany Norwegians, and it was like a punch in the stomach for all of us, and we're not even German! It was a tremendous run though (after all, you went much further than the US)!

Anyway, I'm also posting because I've been looking for a song we heard over and over in the clubs in Berlin. I could also hear it being chanted over the television broadcasts of the Germany game, so it seems to be well known. I think there was a verse in German, though the words escape me as I was quite drunk and it was some time ago (and my German is only so good).

But the chorus is just a repeat of yai yai yai yai yay, yai yay, yai yayyyy. Hard to type out like it sounds, but maybe that is familiar? Would very much appreciate an ID. Thanks!

Prost!
