Whiners try to stop new skateboard park

And then they ask "why are kids getting into so much trouble these days?"

People make me sick

quote:
Skateboarders are usually the ones blamed for making too much noise, but yesterday they were the quiet ones.

Instead, senior citizens, parents with young kids, environmentalists, retirees, bird watchers and fervent local residents were the ones yelling, screaming and calling out their local councillor at a lunchtime meeting.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes was under siege from about 120 people over a proposed $500,000 skateboard park slated for Colonel Samuel Smith Park.

"This park is passive nature, it's not a sport complex park," said resident Diana-Lyn Melnyk. "This is not something to be rushed and pushed down our throats."

The skateboard park is planned for an area -- adjacent to the Power Plant --which some residents claim is full of nesting birds and wildlife. A biologist determined the park would not impact on the natural environment.

Etobicoke businessman Jay Mandarino, identifying himself as a skateboarder who's helped design more than 200 skateboard parks, said the location will flop.

"The location is off the beaten path," Mandarino said. "It's going to attract the wrong kind of skaters."

Skaters complain they can't go anywhere without being harassed, so being away from houses is good. However, they're upset the design is not challenging; it's been taken back to the drawing board.

"This is a perfect spot," said Lazar Grigorov, 17, who arrived with a board and his hand in a cast from a recent wipeout. "If they change the location people will complain about the noise."

Former councillor Irene Jones claimed there were other possible sites and Grimes promised to examine them.

Sadly Lazar Grigorov has learned very young about how intolerant his country really is.

I didn't know there were right and wrong kind of skaters.

Dude I live in the area and I've already seen flyers on lamp posts and bus stops advertising this Although, on the flyers it says that it's a 1.5 million dollar skate park that they're trying to stop. I go rollerblading in the area they're talking about pretty often and I think it's a perfect spot for it.

I'm sure he does have a point.

But not only did I read the whole sentence, I read the whole article, I was just saying, I didn't realize there were " wrong " skaters and " right " skaters, that's all. I don't know skaters that well, but the ones I know are just laid back and cool, so I have no reason to know a difference.

Just another case of NIMBYism...

and sadly people are listening to these idiots

Obviously the grumps would rather have them loiter, vandalize, cause crime and be up to no good all summer due to boredom.

Give teens things to do in the summer, and they'll stay out of trouble.

exactly. you keep them doing something they like. and it'll keep them out of things that you don't want them to do.
lots of people need to chill out and realize that times are changing.

Posted by starsearcher on Jul-07-2006 13:10:

that is what's especially funny.

apparently the folks in charge haven't really consulted with their target market...SKATERS!

from what I've read, there is a huge FLAT section to be built...no half pipe, no ramps, etc. which would seem to be the whole f'n point of building a real skate park.

10 yr olds might be happy with a flat surface where they can practice simple tricks...

Posted by Pett on Jul-07-2006 19:27:

100% sure a skate park there will be successful.....its in the beaches right off the bike path

Posted by slingshot on Jul-07-2006 19:36:

rediculous...

are these people who complain forgettting that they were once kids too?

Thats because kids should be at home doing nothing...locked up and doing all the housework.....making cheap shoes......and having their spirits broken....and sold on the black market.

because that's what their parents had to do when they were kids.

walk 12 miles to school through the snow, uphill both ways.

seems as though if you flood TA with enough complaints about laws, once in a while you will actually come across one that actually is worth discussing....this is bullshit, let them have their park.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If they're going to complain about making a skatepark for the kids, then don't complain when they have nothing to do and thus find other less favourable ways to waste their time!

I, for one, am completely surprised that everyone is protesting this. I live in an area which is as surbuban as one can get in Mississauga and we have a skate park that is used by young kids and teens and never caused trouble. It's even close to some houses which are across the street. Not once have I seen vandalism or garbage even strewn about. I think it's great having it because it does give kids something to do.

Back in the days when i skated in 93, it was a dream to have city made skate park. Now, you can't skate anywhere ... you'll get a ticket for areas that skating is banded. One of the best skate spots in the US is the LOVE park in Philly and EMB in San Fran. Both of those spots are world famous and lots of skaters fly from all over the world to skate it. Carlsband in Cally, the city banned skateboarding completely.

Skate Parks are a must nowa days.

I agree they should consult skaters, but kids are useless because they dont know how to build a good layout. There are professional consultant companies (not many, but they exist) specifically for skateparks. Usually these are started by pro/ams with a ton of experience skateboarding.

90% of skaters dont skate halfpipe, so it'd be a waste to put one in. Generally speaking most skaters are "street" skaters. We find obsticals such as flat ground, gaps, stairs, rails, ledges, banks etc. that occur in urban landscape. The best parks offer a good flow that include all of the above. The best ones have multiple sections so that as ability improves the obsticals get bigger.

Personally it sounds like a great location, and it's about time that Toronto started accepting skateboarders, instead of sicking security on us 5 seconds after rolling up to a spot, and putting up skate-stoppers on everything in the city.

actually LOVE got a complete overhaul a few years back, because the city was pissed that is had become a "skate spot". now it's mostly all grass and skateboarding is prohibited

The majority of great urban (non skatepark) skatespots now reside outside of North America, as everybody is so uptight about it. Spain, Finland, Australia, Taiwan, China, and Brazil are all hugely popular spots to travel to because of thier laidback attitudes towards skateboarding. In the case of Taiwan & China most people are so intrigued by the sport because of it's lack of popularity that crowds form just to watch.
