David Beckham has held talks with Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd about a sensational return to English football.

On the day Newcastle discovered they will lose Michael Owen for a year, it emerged that Shepherd met the Beckhams at Claridge's hotel in London.

Sportsmail's exclusive pictures show Victoria and Shepherd leaving the hotel, where the meeting took place.

Should Beckham agree to join up with Newcastle? Tell us what you think on reader comments below.

Newcastle want Beckham to take over the No 7 shirt once worn by another former England captain, Kevin Keegan, and are willing to put together a 120,000-a-week package to lure him back from Real Madrid. An image rights deal, enabling Beckham to rake in a percentage of shirt sales and club shop memorabilia, would be part of the package.

Beckham's agent dismisses Newcastle rumors

Associated Press

NEWCASTLE, England (AP) - David Beckham's agent has dismissed rumors that the former England captain is set to move to Newcastle.

Beckham has been at Spanish club Real Madrid since 2003. His agent in Spain, Simon Oliveira, said speculation started after Beckham and Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd were seen at a London store.

"David and Victoria didn't meet with Freddy Shepherd and they haven't discussed a move to Newcastle," Oliveira said Friday.

"David dropped Victoria at Claridges to have a meeting with her publishers regarding her new book. It just so happened that Shepherd was also there. But there's no truth of a meeting taking place."

Newcastle also distanced itself from the rumor.

"Newcastle never comment on transfer speculation," the club said in a statement. "The club has always enjoyed a close relationship with Real Madrid and would never do anything to spoil that relationship."

Beckham resigned as England captain after the team was knocked out by Portugal in the World Cup quarterfinals. He has one year left on his contract with Madrid and is looking for an extension.

"We are in negotiations to renew his contract," Oliveira said. "All parties have shown a desire to tie up a new deal and it will come sooner rather than later."

but who knows...the combination of Michael Owen, David Beckham, Patrick Kluivert, and Alan Shearer - could be a nice team

patrick is long gone from newcastle, and alan shearer retired this year
anelka might be joining the team with beckham. would be interesting to see beckham there though.

lol well then...i'm a little slow with my updates Maybe Shearer will decide to come back...who knows And Owen won't play until 2007 anyway...doubt there's truth to this but you never know

well the reason i believe this is true is because fat fred is famous for spending ridiculous amounts of money on useless stars (sorry thats how i feel about beckham right now). not to mention that fat fred loves to make terrible decision - what we really need is a striker and our midfield is not short of talent - buying beckham will be a disastrous decision. although we do need a good experienced leader to replace shearer. someone to organize the team well. im conflicted now.

Aha so I take it you're a Magpies man ...well I don't know. Newcastle is not a bad team but they don't have anyone outstanding. I wouldn't call Beckham a useless player - he could very well fit into the team's strategy...but once again who knows

I still think he's going to stay in Madrid unless they don't want him, and then he'll move to (my best guess) New York or LA and play in the MLS or something...which will be great cause if him and Ronaldo make the move we'll see them playing against the Toronto FC here in TO

our team is packed with talent, but its unguided talent. thanks to souness. and our defence is good for nothing. but thats Newcastle you gotta expect and accept that.

the thing about beckham is hes 33 and the new president is looking to add midfielders of kaka caliber, which might bench beckham. so theres a good chance that he'll go back to england.

maybe we'll get to see him play IN Toronto FC. there is talks in mlse that the team will be seeing a big star in their roster. if beckham comes to toronto this city will go nuts.

Yeah that'll never happen...First of all, what the hell is he going to do here? Second of all, our 20,000 person "National stadium" will never be enough to pay his paycheck...

He'll go to NY or LA area which is where the big $ is...and crowds
