More than just prog house.... here is an interview I did w/ him for another sight in which he talks about this and a story w/ Tiesto
TONE DEPTH INTERVIEW
(Friday July 28th at Sullivan Room for the People NYC anniversary)
Q: Tone, you just came back from touring in Greece, what was the scene like?
-A lot of good parties going on, I was playing on the beach one morning at sunrise and it was incredible. I also had some great gigs in Hungary. The scene is really strong there right now.
Q: With everyone and their cousin playing with production software in their bedrooms and when you go on MySpace it seems like there are more DJs than fans out there. Whats more important to be successful in this industry: being a great DJ or a great producer?
-With the market the way it is right now you cant just produce or spin records to make it. When you produce you need to try new things and take chances, but also put something out that is quality when it has your name on it. Thats so important. A lot of artists want to just get signed thinking that its the key to stardom but every track that you put out has to be solid.
As a DJ you cant just be up there mixing and expect the crowd to get into it, you really need to be a performance artist. When I play its a complete release for me, thats why I always find myself on the floor when I have a 8 minute track running.
Q: Youve said that you resemble a famous porn-star in Canada and that it has been a problem at some gigs up there. Care to elaborate?
-Im the same height and have the same dreads as a really big porn star here in Canada and it sometimes gets me into trouble. For example, one night I was playing a gig and this guy who was a Hells Angel stared at me for an hour and then jumped into the booth yelling about how he was going to kill me because he saw me online fucking his girl in the ass! It was not funny at the moment but its fucking hilarious now.
Q: The rumor around NYC is that there is going to be a midget dressed as an Oompa Loompa at Sullivan Room next Friday, if he brings some records will you let him drop in a mix or two?
-(Laughing) Seriously? Only if his midget girlfriend gives me head while hes playing (laughing) No, Im just kidding. Ha! No Im not- That would check a very obscure sexual fantasy off the list for me.
Q: A lot of the people on this board have a hard-on for minimal. Whats your take on the sound?
-Its more of a local thing in my opinion, in NYC and certain parts of Europe its got a big following its a great style, I dont play it because its not big dance floor, big club materialfor me, when theres 1000 people on the floor they need a beat that says Now dance mother******! and not some 125 bpm blipped-out track.
Q: Whats in the production pipeline for Tone Depth?
-Oh man, so much. Im mastering several tracks right now that are some of my best material yet, but I cant mention the labels because were still in negotiation. My sound is really changing. Im bringing a lot of electro and rock into it now, and am moving away from that repetitive progressive beat. I go on beatport these days and I cant tell one song from another. Im also engineering Lionel Ritchies new album with QuickSound, a group of producers here in Montreal.
Q: This ones for the director of Rhythmism: Ever have a groupie orgy?
-No comment but I wont say no. (laughing)
Q: Youve mentioned that you stopped touring with your best friend, accomplished DJ/Producer the Sultan, why is that?
-Man, we grew up together and started out playing together all over the place.
After the Deep Dish Toronto album broke we were doing some great gigs all around the world but these days honestly, with the scene contracting, it makes more sense for promoters to not have to buy two flights, pay two fees, etc. Its also hard because we have different booking companies and they would have to coordinate everything.
-Q: What has been your best moment as a DJ so far?
There have been so many great nights and I dont regret getting into this career at all, but the absolute best would have to be when I played w/ Tiesto in Montreal last year. I opened for three hours and then figured I was done so I started partying like a rock star. At 4:30 in the morning Tiesto grabs me and says: youre back on in 10 minutes.
When I get to the booth he looks down at the CDJ, which had about 75 seconds left on a track and he laughs saying its all you. I scramble to pull my shit out and get a track on just in time and then had 3 hours in front of about 3000 people that were going crazy. It was incredible.
-Q: Any words for the crowd thats going to be at Sully next Friday for the People NYC anniversary?
Get ready to get serious- I love playing that place and I love partying with the People crew.
Tone Depth will be performing on Friday, July 28th at Sullivan Room for the PEOPLE NYC 1 Year Anniversary Party. For reduced admission email: [email protected]
