Smoking to kill one billion in 21st century: cancer society

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Smoking will kill one billion people over the course of the 21st century if people continue to smoke at the current rate, the
American Cancer Society said.

Tobacco use killed 100 million smokers over the past century -- half of them in developing countries, according to two new reference guides on tobacco an cancer released by the US society.

The studies, published in The Cancer Atlas and The Tobacco Atlas, said that 300 million lives could be saved over the next 50 years if smoking was cut in half.

The research notes that tobacco is the only product consumed by humans that kills more than half of its regular users, "with more than half of those deaths occurring between the ages of 30 and 69."

The study found that some one billion men and 250 million women currently smoke cigarettes and that the "global burden of cancer" is increasingly shifting from developed to developing countries.

Note to self: don't smoke

its funny how these days EVERY lung cancer death is linked to smoking or second hand smoke.

Meanwhile its proven that people die from it in many other ways.

1) naturally
2) asbestos exposure
3) radon gas exposure (apparently radon is a problem in 1 out of 4 houses)

4) suspended particulate (ie regular air pollution)

Yet somehow EVERY cancer death is automatically due to smoking these days.

If the government were really serious about preventing lung cancer, instead of trying to win votes, theyd install a radon detector into every single household and try to deal with what is in my opinion the biggest lung cancer threat that most of us face.

FUUUUCCCK! WE'RE ALL DOOMED!

I need a smoke...

Well you're bound to die from something. I saw a funny sign the other day on a bus, it said "One of these 2 people will die from smoking" (or something to that effect). All i could think of was both of these people are going to die anyways lol. One might die from smoking, the other one from drinking, or a car accident, plane crash, fuck knows. But either ways, they will BOTH die at some point.

That's not true. I'm planning on living forever. Or at least till I get tired of living and want to play a game of cards with God.

LOL: everyone's going to die from something? Hun - there's quite a huge difference in dying from natural causes, rather than by sucking in poisons into your own lungs for NO benefit. I mean, don't get me wrong - I like to enjoy substances, but because the opportunity cost isn't greater than the joy I experience from them. Smoking? Ita like the lamest vice I can possibly think of. Aside from being addicted to monkey porn. Which still has less impact on ones own body. Brutal.

Okay first of all: Don't call me "hun". There's no need to be condescending for no reason whatsoever.

Second: I was making an OBSERVATION. Which means that it is kinda like voicing my thoughts out loud, ya get?

Third: I don't condone smoking. I am a smoker myself but i would never EVER tell anyone to smoke.

Third: I was unaware dying in a car accident or a plane crash was a "natural" way to die. Last time i checked a car was man-made, not something nature conjured up out of nowhere.

Fourth: Ya okay, so you're saying substance abuse is better than smoking? HAHAHAHA. Keep living in your bubble then lol. I've used "substances" and have seen firsthand how badly they can fuck up your body.

you can't forget that smoking also makes you impotent.

Posted by adi26 on Jul-14-2006 12:05:

This whole cigarette smoking thing is overhyped imo.

The government doesnt really give a tiny rat's about people smoking. They have to put in a good name for themselves by saying smoking harms n all that stuff,

but if people stop smoking - then the government would die without the taxes.
