raves in vancouver

hey

im yet another aussie whos making the pilgramage to whistler for the snow season in 06/07. have lived in van before a few years ago (rode at mt seymour) but didnt get out much then. anyway plan on hitting up the city for some partying while im there.

was wondering what the rave seen is like over there? im into trance predominantly, but would go and see anything in the hardstyle/hardstyle through to techno/minimal genres. do you guys have raves in warehouses (ours got shut down a few years ago) and is the scene underground or commercial there? and how are the clubs... worth a look?

any reccomendations would be appreciated, esspecially would love to go to a more underground trance or techno event if they exist there...

ohh, and if anybody would like to reccomend me a cheap condo/apartment ($100-200 a week and within walking distance to lifts) to rent for the season (four of us) im sure you could find a couch to crash on whenever you needed it...

thanks

very very commercial.

literally 0 underground events, except for some bush parties during the summer. I cant even recommend any clubs to you because clubnights pl;aying the genres you lke get shut down often. Check check the vancouver events thread in this forum and you should find something to do.

With the exception of a few outdoor festival type shows this summer...

Raves in Vancouver have Cheesy line-ups, no alcohol, lots of undercover police/loser security, and lots of local DJs who should never be playing out.

you're 10 years too late

you guys are so negative
lets just say vancouver is going through a transition period right now
i see great things happening in this city in the not so distant future
im sure armin will make his way back into the city, and so will other trance DJs towards end of the year, and there will be others next year too. we may not have regular trance events happening at this time, but they will come, have faith!

if you dont mind prog, there are, i think, at least two good prog nights in vancouver, with good talent. we've got house, and now there's a new electro night. there may still be a harder trance night in richmond (about 30 minutes from vancouver), cant say much about this one tho.

so yea, if you're willing to dig and look around, im sure you can find a good compromise to big room trance and techno

IMO it doesnt even matter if there is a good DJ on a 'rave' line-up in this city anymore...

The rest of the line-ups are so poorly programed, and usually just sereve as a platform for the promoter and their friends to play their crappy music at...

TRUTH HURTS

I think it's the same eveywhere in Canada. Come to think of it.. only 2 raves that I've played at were really amazing, both of them in Quebec city.

Posted by Tayfoon on Jul-18-2006 03:29:

People throw raves here PURELY to make money with pretty much no effort put into the line up

And the parties themself are terrible

Not true. Toronto has quite a few trance events going on all the time. Two weeks ago they had ATB this week 4 Strings are inn. You got Labour of Love coming up (Armin, Ferry, Junkie XL)...also Blank & Jones are coming down...thats only the big names...don't forget Toronto is home to some very siiiiiick Dj's such as Sean Miller, Manzone n Strong, Mark Oliver...although ther are not all trance dj's they can throw it down with the best of em.

Posted by 24K on Jul-18-2006 03:48:

^^^ Vancouver and other cities also have good local DJs mate.

I haven't been to TO so I didnt really want to comment. Obviously the scene in TO and Montreal is the best in Canada, everyone knows that.

Out of the guest DJs you listed.. Junkie XL (possibly ferry because he such a cool guy in person) is the only ones I'd be interested seeing.. all of the others are utter shyte

edit: we were talking about 'raves' not the club scene, or scene in general.

Personal opionin on AVB...but I think hes awesome. Anywho I don't know much about the rave scene, I'd rather hit up a big nice club with a good dj spinning.

its all about raving thats what everyone forgets. if you had your first electronic music experience sipping a martini and leaning on the bar then i think you owe it to the community to go out and fry 5% of your brain in a warehouse someplace.

both have their plus/minus's.

at least you guys have good snow...

sounds like your scene sucks (no offence). sounds like toronto is where its through.

underground parties are rare here now but we still have a thriving trance/hardtrance seen with regular big events (5000-30,000 people).

anyway i still might wonder round the city. i found east hastings street an 'interesting' place last time... hahaha

very interesting place. if you are looking for a place to buy crack and people to do it with that is.

What's a rave again?

Our club scene here is good fun. fridays & saturdays at Gecko are now both rocking. Saturdays at Red Room as well are fun.

Our rave scene was bought, diluted, packaged up, and sold to the highest bidder in a reconstituded form of throwup that no one I regularly associate has any appetite for.

Yo man... I for one can't wait for the snow!!!

Definitely send me a PM when you get to Vancouver. I spin trance and progressive house, so I can definitely point you in the right direction. I'm opening for BT August 25th and another great show in September...

Cheers mate

at least van, has club shows on weekends... yaaaa to that

There are a few true underground parties, but they're pretty 'hush-hush' to the general public, and even not-so-general-public (I'm lookin' at you, FnK). Hey, if they were easy to find, they wouldn't be underground, now would they?

Still, I find Lotus has managed to maintain that 'ol' school' vibe nicely.

Posted by Tayfoon on Jul-20-2006 02:27:

BTW

Meth parties arent what normal people consider underground parties
