Extreme Whitewater Rafting Trip...

Hey hey folks,,,

Thought I would inquire to see if any of you cool cats wanna join me and a few others on our annual whitewater trip to West Virginia...

For those of you that enjoy whitewater rafting,,, we usually reserve 4 person rafts, (for extra action, lol) and the river is rated in the top 10 best whitewater rivers in the world... I can't remember if it is 5th or 6th... But whatev, its an awesum time, with plenty of class 5 water...

We go down on the opening w/e of what they call "Gauley season" It is the 1st w/e after labour day w/e every year... So this year it is the w/e of Sept. 9th/10th... The cost is roughly $300 to $350 canadian + gas/snacks/beverages/souveniers... Food is included and is actually good...

I have plenty of info as I somehow became the trip organizer over the years, and if anyone is seriously interested, just let me know,,,

Sounds very interesting and expensive.

I'm already going on a month-long vacation as of next week, but white-water rafting is lots of fun, falling off is half the fun.

I also went on an 8-day ww canoeing and portage in northern Quebec once, and it's unforgettable.

My friend did some research online for a good place for white water rafting. The place she found charges $125/day of rafting, and the raft holds seven. So in a way the actual rafting isn't too expensive. But the place is somewhere out in Ottawa. So if you add up the other expensives (i.e. transportation, food, and accomdation) it's going to be a bit pricy. But I guess it's worth the excitement...haha....

The above picture was taken on the Ottawa River, and Wilderness Tours is the biggest operator. Our group rate was about $150 a day (2days, 2 nights) and it included meals and the camping site. You can buy DVDs of your different runs too for about $45 bucks, which was very affordable, since we split the cost between 6 people, and I burned copies for everyone. It's an excellent place to start, if you've never been.

I just did the Ottawa River w/ my lady and her best friend (plus one), and we used River Run - They used the Six-Man rafts as opposed to the Twelve-Man rafts and wholy shit, was it a lot of fun - We got tossed around big time.

just came back from RiverRun in ottawa this past weekend. It was absolutly crazy we paid 270 a person for 2 days of rafting and they feed you both days afte the rafting they have a bar on the resort they feed u both days and its pretty good food. River run deffinatly looked like the best one cuz all the other people had either 12 man rafts (which never flip and thats more than half the fun) and just look plain dissapointing, and there were a couple who let u go on the raft without a guide but its not really rapids... more like slopids that u take... u dont get to do any surfing, and u end up crashing into the rocks and stuck.... any ways if you are looking for a really good time deffinatly checkout RiverRun the staff is awsome... we got our guide Olaf so drunk he could harldy walk after our tour. we deffinatly got to go down way more rapids than any of the other companies on the river, and surfed the rapids over and pover which is something else the oher ones didnt really do. we're going back next year 100% feel free to PM me if u like for more info

I was throughly impressed with that ^_^ The Poor guy was ready to puke on the beach ffs.

Wilderness Tours used the 10-man rafts only for the first run of the day to get acquainted. The other runs are on the 6-man rafts. Kayaks were also available.

The resort does have cabins and tents, large buffet, bar, nightclub (pretty large) with hot tub, volleyball courts, street hockey rink, pool and pingpong tables, huge bonfire, and a huge industrial crane for bunjee jumping.

The prices are similar to River Run. River Run is a good operation, smaller and newer to the scene. But much more ppl to meet and party with at WT. Try them both.

Here is an example of what to expect on this river... This video is of a 12 person raft... as I mentioned before, we go down in 4 person rafts, you can let your imagination run wild, with what happens to a 4 person raft on a river where the only time you paddle is in whitewater...

I have run down the Ottawa River many times with most of the major outfitters and it is always a good time... However, the Ottawa River looks like a creek compared to the Mighty Upper and Middle Gauley River...

holy shit they got grade 5 rapids on there.

This thread makes me wanna get wet.

I'm hoping to head down to the same area in September with some Cleveland friends.

He showed me some pictures and they look like damn fun.

I've done a white water canoe course before. Does class 5 rapids require you to have a bit more experience?

My group meets up with a group from Cincinnati and another group from Lansing, Michigan... The crowd of people that go to opening week-end generally go every year... I should post my pics,,, I have some awesum shots from over the years...

There is NO experience necessary... many people break their whitewater cherry on the Gauley... And it is a real treat to watch that!! Any experience with whitewater, such as canoeing will obviously be valuable on this sort of trip, but like I said, it is not required...

I should note there are FIVE class five rapids on the Gauley River, and we won't be portaging any of them!! For those of you who have run the Ottawa river,, you know how much it sucks to come up to one of the best rapids on the river, only to be forced to carry your HUGE raft, through a portage trail meant for Kayaks and Canoes... There is one company in Ottawa that runs the rapid I am talking about and that is 'Esprit'... If I ever head back to the Ottawa River, that is who I will run with...
