need computer help..please
ok, im having trouble with a certain computer,
its brand new and it came with software already installed, but for some reason the computer thinks that its on a network, so each time i try connecting to the internet it does not want to and tells me that i should check the network.
is there a way i can delete the network settings and reinstall them so that the computer connects directly to the internet and not through a network? i've tried renewing my IP address but that doesnt seem to work at all.
any help would be appreciated.
U mean "network adapter disconnected"?
umm, to be honest i dont know if thats what i mean, but if that helps then yeah.
If its on winXP, go to Start -> Settings -> Network Connections. There you'll see all active network connections. You can delete whatever you want. CHeck under your device manager that your lan card is installed properly, although if it is a semi-new machine, it should probably have an integrated card...
BTW, did you just plug it into your network, and then try to double click on the IE icon or something? Cuz that prolly won't work.

1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar. 2. Click Run... on this menu. 3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen. 4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es). 5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address. 6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address). Tips: 1. If it is not necessary to view the current IP addresses on a computer, simply type 'ipconfig /release' or 'ipconfig /renew' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears in Step 3. 2. To bring a computer back onto the network after moving it to a different location, or experiencing an unexpected outage, first release, then renew the IP address. Computers on DHCP networks often (but not always) re-establish network connectivity automatically. |

mecha posted good tip. You'll want to release then renew your ip, and that should get your pc to pick up a new ip addy.
ok, that ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew stuff is not working, it can release but then it is not renewing, i dont know whats wrong with this damn thing. any other suggestions besides formating?
I don't think a format is needed. You aren't giving us enough info to really troubleshoot what's going on.
Did you run the network setup wizard?

yeah i tried the network connection wizard multiple times, that was the first thing i did, i cant delete the only network setting that i have, the only thing i can do with it is disable and enable.
i get this message when i try to renew the IP address.
An error occured while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. request has timed out.

nah the modem connects fine, i know this coz i have another computer that can connect to the net. the comp that im having trouble with can detect a LAN cable connected to it, but then not info is comming in what so ever.
Are you using a router?
BTW, if you have a working computer that can connect to the net, then just copy over the settings for the connection is uses. Make sure all the protocols have identical settings.
